Should a vic team move to Gold Coast and settle part time 4 games a year. Suns look like aren’t a viable entity and a vic club should move in.

Hawks and North play 4 games a year in Tasmania. Bulldogs play up in Ballarat. Demons play 2 games a year in NT. Why can’t someone else play 4 games a year at Metricon and put in a proposal to AFL. Suns more likely to fold.

If Blues were given a proposal to play
7 home games in Vic and 3 games at Metricon and 1 at Townsville. AFL will give extra $3-$4 mill a year for that arrangement I wouldn’t mind. Set up a second base. Heaps of Vic teams doing it. Port even playing up in Shanghai. GWS play 3 games a year in Canberra. Good Opportunity to increase supporter base for a Vic club willing to move. St Kilda tried New Zealand experiment but didn’t work but clubs are trying to increase their bases.

Wouldn’t hurt a Vic team as play against other Vic teams in Melbourne so would comfortably play over 10 games a year in Melbourne.

Carlton are more than welcome to go there if they want.
The Suns ain’t going nowhere and nor should they. It will be a slow process but the Suns will eventually make it. Football growth and development is huge up there and some of their programs will start reaping rewards in the coming years

In the event Suns fold. Makes no sense another team playing up at Metricon while Suns still in existence. Would only be part time proposal too not a permanent move.

Brisbane & Gold Coast should merge , Queensland Lions

Spare license goes to Tasmania !!

Two problems solved !!

Don’t disagree. Spare license in Tasmania could upset Hawks and Kangaroos as they are trying to set up shop and could be an AFL-Bikie style war in Tassie. New team could be seen as moving into Hawks/North terf. Hawks have been in Tassie for over 10 years.

Do think right now Lions need merger. Already merged before. Try mixing the history and culture of Fitzroy/Bears/Suns together. AFL need find a solution to Gold Coast Suns and think Vic team playing part time could help, scrapping the Suns team. It’s worked in Tassie, can in Gold Coast.

This worked for Lions. Increase salary cap, make Gold Coast a financial destination.

* the Hawks and Kangaroos. If a Tasmanian licence means they can't whore themselves off to another state then so be it.

Let's artificially inflate the playing list of another club? ANOTHER great idea!

Will be vurnerable. I think is Tassie team does get established it will be in Hobart, so Kangaroos will be prone to leaving. Hawks will be relitevely safe as their base is in another city.

No matter how much people bizarrely will it to happen, THE SUNS WILL NOT FOLD BECAUSE OF ON-FIELD RESULTS, nor is the success or failure of the club or expansion into the Gold Coast market being judged by their on-field results in their first decade of existence.

People forget that (the last club to fold/merge) Fitzroy's problems were largely financial, which resulted in player retention issues (leading to fielding weak teams, and poor results on the field), and then their extinction. They were headed in the right direction in both 1989 and 1993 (double-figure wins in both seasons, young talent on the list), before financial woes and player and coach retention issues reared their head each time.

Fitzroy could have been saved, if the league wanted to do it at the time (Fitzroy were only $4.5M in debt, which isn't a huge amount when you consider the economics of the AFL, both then and now). No club will be allowed to go under in the same manner by the league again, though.

Again, clubs don't fold because of on-field results, but because of financials, which often bleed into the on-field product. The Gold Coast's problem isn't financial or a lack of league support, so they won't likely fold anytime soon.

I don't think merging Brisbane is the answer. They've just started to really get it together and I think you risk alienating some of their remaining supporters by upsetting the rhythm like that. If it's absolutely necessary to cut teams in QLD to one I'd be folding GC (sorry to their supporters on here) and giving Brisbane first access to their players to give them a bit of a kick and hopefully into some success. That said I don't think its necessary unless GC becomes a noticeable financial burden for the AFL.

Shows your ignorance on the matter.

No they haven't. A situation which has already been explained to you. We can go through it again if you like.

Exactly. Are people that blinkered? The Suns are here to stay for the forseeable future.

Fitzroy could have survived and prospered. Fitzroy in 1992-93 was a very competitive side. Crowds of 50,000 and above for some Fitzroy games in 1992 and 1993, as well as crowds of above 25,000 for pre-season games showed that the club could attract spectators, if competitive. The club actually made a profit in 1993, they'd finally got a social club that was making money through the Fitzroy Club Hotel (purchased in March 1992) and were making plans to return to the Brunswick Street Oval (just up the road from the Fitzroy Club Hotel) as a training and administration base. The club had actually gained approval from the Council in 1992 to do just that, but just couldn't find the spare $250,000 to renovate the old heritage grandstand and build a modern gymnasium over the existing community rooms.

Fitzroy actually made a small annual profit from 1993-95, courtesy of their social club just up from the BSO.

Fitzroy could have been saved, if the league wanted to do it at the time (Fitzroy were only $4.5M in debt, which isn't a huge amount when you consider the economics of the AFL, both then and now). No club will be allowed to go under in the same manner by the league again, though.

The AFL had the funds, but not the will and indeed were hell bent on removing a Melbourne based club so that Port could come in and the competition could remain at 16 teams. Fitzroy was $2.7 million in debt, of which $1.25 million was to one secured creditor. Fitzroy would have never sought a merger if they could have secured an extra $1 million in funding - $0.5 million to return to the Brunswick Street Oval and upgrade the faciliites (deal done with the existing Fitzroy local council) and $0.5 million to attract players to make the club more competitive onfield. In the end it was the Nauru debt that forced Fitzroy out of the competition...with the AFL scheming not to pay them out of the $6 million merger monies going to North-Fitzroy merger. Nauru therefore appointed an administrator to recover their debt.

So $1 million was the requirement and yet the same year the AFL was prepared to shell out $12 million for two mergers (North-Fitzroy and Melb/Haw).

The current Brisbane Lions CEO, Greg Swann was one of those who was brought in to recover the secured creditor's debt in 1996 and he has stated that Fitzroy could have 'easily been retained' in the AFL competition had there been the will by the AFL to do so.

Again, clubs don't fold because of on-field results, but because of financials, which often bleed into the on-field product. The Gold Coast's problem isn't financial or a lack of league support, so they won't likely fold anytime soon.

Yep. The AFL won't be actively trying to force the Suns out of the competition. I think gillo94 and his ilk better get used to having the Suns around in their own right for quite a long time.

If Tasmania gets a team, I think it's pretty clear that both North and Hawks would be told to * off regardless of what city it's located in.

Don’t think my bad. Lions don’t need s merger. Suns on other hand need success and be able to reach out to the locals to jump on board. If can’t need fold. Might be financially viable as you say but at what cost?

If something isn’t working out, why keep it alive? The idea of a Victorian team or 2 Victorian teams playing 2-4 games a year at Metricon, set up shop like the Hawks have done could be a good idea. Hawks have done reasonably well out of it. The city of Gold Coast might not need a full team team there, they could profit more out of a part time team playing 4 games a year there, follow an already established team with past success rather than a newly established team with no success and up and down culture. Carlton, St Kilda or Essendon might do well out of it with the Gold Coast locals.
