Should Captains wear No.1

The subject title is pretty self explanitory.

I like this old tradition which doesn't happen much anymore. The only current AFL club captain I can think of who wears No.1 is Wanganeen.

I think it would add to the prestege of club captancy & be a reminder to a current captain of his position & responsibilities.
1st the sacrifice of giving up a no. he has played with for however long & then wearing a no. which has only been worn by great players in the past.

Take Carlton for example. Bradley would be given the No. 1 jumper, go to the No. 1 locker & see names like Kernahan, Nichols, Barassi, Walls etc printed on the locker. A reminder of the honour he has been given & his responsability to live up to their standards.

But then again on the same note, maybe the Captain in question had a different idol in childhood than the captain of the team. If they are wearing the same number as their "hero" it could be just as equally important for them to see that name on their locker to remind them of why they love football so much and be proud to 'walk in the footsteps" of that hero,

Anyway - maybe it should just be up to the individual clubs to work out

Good suggestion Drakey but I tend to agree with Danni.

Certain numbers at different clubs are valued higher than others. While I think your idea has merit, I doubt it would catch on.

For example, the number 4 will always be held in high esteem at St Kilda and the number 3 at the Western Bulldogs.

For a captain to follow in the footsteps of past legends of the club is probably a greater honour than to wear the number 1 for purely being captain.

It's nice in sentiment, but what about those clubs with co-captains, or players who lose or give the captaincy? I can't see that it would be good for players to change numbers more than once in a career.

I was captain of my school team, and honoured to be asked to wear the #1 jumper. That's the way it was back in the 1970s but times have changed. The #1 has lost it's prestige, the Hawks have only issued #1 for the first time this season since 2010. The #1 jumper isn't a prestige number any more. I'd like to see it, but it won't happen.

Why do Port Adelaide have two captains for their AFL team but one captain for their SANFL team?

It's always been Port Adelaide tradition to have one captain and for the captain to wear number 1.

We're told that it's one club but in reality they are two separate clubs.

On the Hawthorn lockers they have how many games a player has played in a certain number. You change numbers fo captains and Sam Mitchell may have played 100 games in three different numbers. They change enough with players starting high and coming low. Don't need to add to that.

Hmm, I like the idea of the captain of Port Adelaide wearing #1. How long has that been a tradition?

As for having more than one captain, I think only one official captain is needed for the job.

The romance of having 3 generations of Silvagnis in #1 means a lot to our supporters. Telling SOS to move so Sticks could have the locker does nothing to advance the club.

Besides, we put names on lockers based on 100 games in that number. Ratten, McKay, Whitnall ... All one season skippers.

For 50 years Collingwood's captains wore the number 1. From Harry Collier, Lou Richards, Murray Weideman, Des Tuddenham to Len Thompson and others, players all switched when they got the captaincy.
It stopped in 1979 with Ray Shaw and has not come back.

I'm afraid the reality is we are. Your lot haven't beaten us since 2015 so I get the sour grapes.

We've had the same captains since inception and we're very happy with them. Cal Ward leads from the front and Phil Davis is more the cerebral type, who also does the media.

They finished 3rd and 4th in our B&F last year. Whatever problems you might have we're allright Jack.

I’m sorry. You really, really aren’t a club. Just a shiny new franchise. You’re the AFL equivalent of a McDonald’s on the side of the highway.

Personally I couldnt care less. If clubs stick with this tradition that's great for them. If they dont, it's no big deal either. I associate player numbers more with the individual than the team role or position.
For example Richo wearing number 12 was iconic at the Tigers. Kids everywhere wore the 12 and it's still a hugely popular Guernsey and everyone knows what it represents for the Tigers as one of the fans favourite sons and beloved players. Would of hated if he changed his number because he was captain in his twilight years.

Ironic given Port Power were established in 1997.

You only have an extra 15 years on us so if I were you I wouldn't be pulling the 'franchise' card.
