Should chairing players off be for champions only?

Save it for 300+ gamers, retirees and select 200 gamers where they have overcome adversity of some sort.
So like David Mackay? Worst 200 gamer in history 🥱

Its an honour awarded to their players to their teammates, not just for what's happened on the field but for everything you don't see off it - who and why they honour is entirely their call and so it should be.

As a supporter if you dont think a chair-off is due - then get off your lazy arse and become an AFL footballer.

Just so you can decline a chairing after 300 games? That's dedication

On the same note, the former Steven Hocking-led rules committee should now also introduce strict rules for high fives, hugs and other post-goal celebrations. These are honours that must be EARNED and should only be dispensed after goals with a requisite degree of skill and class.

Also, players who have kicked a goal should not be allowed to initiate a high five themselves in celebration (that means you Buddy). Players need to learn humility. The sharing of emotions and mutual recognition by team mates in a team sport must stop.

Its just a bit of seppo bullshit the West Indies have introduced anyway

It should be up to the club who they chair off, not be dictated by the AFL. Ultimately, who cares really. If someone doesn't like it, they can just switch off.

Next thing we'll be chairing first gamers onto the training track

Yeah it's a stone's throw from there. Shouldn't let the first gamer sing the song in the middle of the circle unless he was one of the best players either.

It's one of those things that's for the club and more accurately for the inner sanctum of a club. Whether we like it or not, I don't think we really have the right to decide how the club we support (much less any other) recognises these milestones.

There's like 250 players who've played 250 games in 125 years of VFL/AFL football. Granted it's much easier to do now than it was 50 years ago, but it's still basically 12 years of being picked for senior AFL footy whenever fit. Not bad going...

Good point.
I think its the trends that begin somewhere along the line.
A few decades ago hugging and high fives after a goal wasn't something that was done.
In a few decades time who knows what we will be doing. Maybe every retiring player will be chaired off.

Suspect it was about Hurn in the WCE game

First 300 gamer in the history of the club, 2 time AA and premiership captain. If we're not going to honour that then I don't know what we are going to honour.

I think that chairing players off should be reserved for 250+ game milestones and retiring greats.

Agree with OP, in 10 years time no one will be talking about Shannon Hurn or Shaun Higgins feats on the football field. Good players with longevity, champions they are not.
