Personally, I think he's second half of the year for the Swans has been exceptional. Given that Josh Carr has taken a hike, the second run-with role is now available and he has been doing some fine work in the WAFL.

He has a strong body, good fitness base and fantastic attitude. I've also been impressed at how much his skills by foot have picked up, and I am of the belief he should be elevated.

You dont have to comment now, watch him the WAFL Grand Final, look at his stats and then post your thoughts, cheers.

I would definitely be looking at elevating him.

Looking forward to seeing who he takes in tomorrow's GF.

I'm hoping the club are just waiting to for his season to finish or to see what happens in trade week, but given the number of players who have left and we've got nothing for in return, he's got to be a better option than drafting into the 6th or 7th round (or even holding onto Browne for another year).

That's a bit over the top, he has looked an average WAFL player the times I've seen him play.

Will keep an eye on him tomorrow though, I reckon Harvs and Bondy will be too and if he has a big game he'll probably get elevated.

We have nothing to lose and plenty to gain by elevating him.
He has elite athletic capabilities and will most likely be a quality run with player in years to come.
If he doesn't make it then he has some currency in next year's trade as a Queenslander who may return home. That gives us an opportunity to get higher into the draft next year in that case.
I haven't seen a lot of him but he does appear to be improving and I wouldn't be surprised to see him make the grade.

yeah i would promote him. we are going to have up to 10 teenagers placed on our list next year and a lot of them aren't going to be ready

i still can't get over how big this guy is. he looks like his chest is going to explode

Cant hurt to elevate all our rookies.
Yeah it would.

50/50 on Smith.

Wouldn't mind seeing him take over MaJ's shut down role as our small in the backline. I think we are 1 short in that role.

That way his skills aren't a big factor, and his natural physical attributes are the only things in play.

You haven't watched him much then have you? Not having a go but I've seen every game bar one, oh and the 5+ he played in reserves. He was given games because we have a fairly large injury list, having said that his last 2 games have been good, before that he should have been dropped.

The problem I see with him is he is too 1 dimensional and until someone came up with the ingenious idea of making him into a tagger I reckon he might have been on the scrap heap. I reckon don't rush, leave him on the rookie list for another season, get him to develop other weapons in his arsenal because yes, his athletic ability is fantastic.:thumbsu:

he's not a first picked swans team, totally agree.

Can't see why you would elevate an unproven player who hasn't shown a lot. I don't care if one of the moderators has a lil man crush on him or not. He can sit on the rookie list for another season. Give him every opportunity to prove himself in the pre-season. So as soon as a spot becomes open he can grab it if he earns that.

If the kids going to be a tagger he will never stand out at WAFL level. You just never know until they play the game at AFL pace.

Some people forget Crowley was on the scrap heap at one stage. Some kids take more time to develop.

I'd generally agree fat wombat, but given the huge holes we have in our list, surely an AFL ready body would be preferable to a skinny kid who's not going to play for the next 2 years (if ever) picked at no. 90 odd?

As you say, a player like Smith is not going to show what he can do until he gets out there. If we are hit with injury or poor form next year, he'd be a better option to select.

We can still get our share of skinny kids in the rookie draft.

im not sure i see the point in elevating a player who has not even been playing well in the WAFL. sends a bad message.

He's been playing very well the last couple of week FootyEater.

If we are still picking kids in round 5,6 etc chances are, 3 or 4 of our draftees are going to really struggle with WAFL league next year. Is it better to have them on our senior list, or Smith, who at least is physically ready and has played some good games at WAFL level?

I'd reserve my judgement until after the trade period and see what picks are actually available.

I don't think we can wait that long. From here

rookie promotion has to happen prior to the ND.

I guess we'll have a clearer picture of what we are looking at after trade week, but unless we get a lot of early picks (ie 3rd round and earlier), I think elevating him is a good option.

It should be a simple case of the recruiters/list managers sitting down, rating what they believe will be available with their last picks and deciding if Smith is a better option.

yeah but that is the last couple of weeks in how long? next you will want us to elevate mourish  i mean, if smith is up to AFL surely he would be able to have one consistently good year at wafl level. i mean a few people are saying that you wont see how good he is untill he plays afl, but if he is a tagger, then he should be stopping people at WAFL level consistently first... surely. im all for keeping him on the RL, and if he has a good start to next year, plays 6 or 7 good consistent games, then elevate him then, but not untill he has proven his worth.

by the way on mourish. i went to a dockers training session late in the season. mourish is an absolute dud, he is fat and lazy........ it would be a disgrace for him to be on any form of list next year... that includes wafl list. should be back in gero

I could be wrong, but I don't think Smith is always used as a tagger at Swans.

How many of our draftees will have proven themselves at WAFL league level?

The obvious example is Callum Chambers. Came second in the Sandover, yet in the couple of games where the Joondies played the boys from Basso, Chambers did bugger all as Smith rendered him somewhere between completely useless and relatively ineffectual. If he can do that to a bloke who has played a fair few AFL games, and is runner up in the WAFL B&F, then he has probably done alright on others in that comp also.

I'm with Chook. Even if he plays the whole season in the WAFL, I'd rather have him on the senior list and drawing a base AFL pay, rather than some skinny 18 year old who is 3 years away from a game. Reward the kid for the hard work he's put in so far to at least get his body the right size and shape to play AFL. Give him just the one year contract, and if he's no good at the end of next year then cut him. It's really six of one half a dozen of the other really, but gut feel for me says I'd rather Smith on the senior list than some bloke picked at pick 97.

i can see both of your points IP and chook, adn maybe a 1 year deal is worth a look at. i have never said that smith hasnt had good games, as im sure he has. i really havent been able to watch much wafl in the last couple of years, every time i hear about smith though, he has been ordinary, and to me elevating a guy that has been generally nothing but ordinary is dangerous in my mind. but hey the dockers may go with that. as you say, atleast he will be physically up to the rigours of AFL if given a go.

as long as mourish doesnt get elevated im happy.
