North going to the Gold Coast absolutely would've been the best thing for the AFL. At North's expense of course.

An established playing group plus some priority picks and extra salary cap would've played finals by now and may have even won a flag.

But then we'd only have 17 teams and that means 8 games a round. If North did go would we still have 18 teams today?

I think the AFL at the time were way more keen on entering the Gold Coast market than Western Sydney.

At least the Gold Coast had some VFL/AFL history at Carrara with the Bears and could learn from past mistakes to be in a better position to set up another club there. The Lion's three-peat was still fresh in people's minds. There are also a ton of Vic ex-pats that live on the Gold Coast that may have a casual interest in a new side there. Also, the Gold Coast Titans just started, so it was imperative for the AFL to get into the region and not lose fans to the rival code when there was a chance.

Western Sydney was and still is very much rugby league land with big established clubs. The is also a big migrant population backing soccer in the region too.... a monumental task for the AFL to get any traction there in the short/medium term. I doubt the Swans' narrow 2005 flag win had much impact in terms of interest in Aussie Rules in the western suburbs. It was still certainly on the AFL's radar, but just a case on when they were willing to pull the trigger.... the AFL were willing to wait on it I think.

When North rejected Gold Coast, AFL still wanted Gold Coast but didn't want a bye each round and would rather have the extra game per round for more TV rights $$$.... it forced the AFL's hand in forming GWS as well.

If North went to the Gold Coast, Gold Coast would have a side and there would be more "breathing room" in Melbourne... AFL would have been content with just that for now and Western Sydney would have been put back in the "too hard" basket and on the back burner. Still a 16 club comp.

Not going to bother reading the OP, but yes, North should have gone to GC, are still a nothing club despite winning 7 games and should have been a nothing club on the GC.

Stay salty.

Here, have a spoon.

North members made the correct decision remaining in Melbourne. More members than ever & on field success show that the decision makers at Adren Street have got it right.

It was the right decision, partly because our heritage remains intact, but partly because teams in new markets should get their own team, moving a club that has been poorly run to a new market will just change the location, not what made it poor in the first place.

People of Gold Coast have to knuckle down and support their club, and through these hardships the club will become an icon of the city and a representative of the community and the people, then it will mean something to them.

Haha carlton pipeing up about another club. How many number one draft picks have you had? 3 in a row? How many on the list now 4-5? Andrew walker priority pick pick 2. Would of had goddard or wells as well if you didn't cheat! I'd pipe down and give up on the comedy routine :mask:

Not sure who's more insecure, you or your club :thumbsu:
Richmond supporters win the insecurity title by a country mile.

"Yeah we may be s**t at football... But but but BIG CROWDS and MONEYYYY".

Small dick syndrome at its finest

Is that what you think matters to us? Just highlights your insecurity about SMALL CROWDS and NO MONEYYYY.

If by sold out, you mean giving away a s**t load of free tickets to get people through the door so the stadium wouldn't look empty, then yeah, sold out.
The games against Collingwood and Geelong in the first season sold out months in advance... highly doubt any free tix would've been given

Ninethmond and their supporters.. the gift that keeps on giving!

If North had gone to the Gold Coast:
1. The AFL would have pushed for a merger or relocation of one of St Kilda, the Doggies or Melbourne. We can argue all day and night about whether or not those teams would have folded or not. But I can almost guarantee you the AFL would have pushed hard at some point.
2. Andy D wouldn't have had the Etihad Stadium contract renegotiated. The AFL would have scheduled an extra 8 games at Etihad. More then likely they would have moved low drawing MCG games. More then likely, meaning less games at the G for interstate teams.
3. It would have meant we didn't play three games in Tasmania. You could make the point that the AFL would have pushed the Saints to Tassie (see point 2).

How is this even up for debate? North have never been healthier as a football club.

Would be fitting to celebrate with a Flag to see out Brayshaw's final term with the board who saved the club and made it something to be proud of again.

Maybe if Carlton had succeeded in its attempt to buy North Melbourne they wouldn't be such an embarrassing heap of s**t now.
