Firstly... Mick is one of my favorite players...

What I am asking is do people think Mick has another year left or is he gunna hang around for one year too many... I am not talking about team balance or have we got a replacement... merely is he going to hurt a great reputation by playing in 2001...

I personally am in two minds and was wondering what others think...

It's a good question but I believe he has another good year left - unfortunately he was clearly carrying injuries in a couple of games that hurt his reputation. North needs someone else to come through in the backline to replace (or ease the load on) Mick.

An injury free Mick Martyn is crucial to our 2001 chances. Another fullback option (and I'n not thinking of McCartney) is crucial for our chances beyond 2001.

Mick's greatest asset is his physical strength. A man's physical strength supposedly reaches its peak at age 40. Mick is a player that doesn't rely greatly on pace or silky skills, so if he keeps himself injury-free, he should get a couple of years yet out of his body (I'd say probably two years).

Injury free and Mick definitely has one, possibly two, seasons left in him. But whenever he gets injured, he takes about 2 or 3 games before he gets back into stride. The thing is that as he gets older, it will take him longer to get back into stride.

Keep Mick as the first option, but if injuries start to take their toll, then it might be time to bite the bullet send Adam Lange down there.

Firstly are you gonna tell him or do you want me to??

I'm not sure that we have a genuine replacement for Mick at full back - Lange maybe, McCartney doesn't have the off the mark pace, Arch doesn't have the height!

Mick will probably take longer and longer to get over injuries - probably time to act now on training up an apprentice enforcer!!

Cheers

In the longterm, whoever gets to replace Mick at full back will need plenty of patience from the fans. Not only is Mick a legend at the club, but when a full back gets slaughtered, people really notice.

Thinking about this, I feel sorry for the guy who succeeds Carey at centre half forward. Or is the next one to wear the number 18 jumper.

I think Mick's time has already come. I fear season 2001 will prove to be one year too many. I hope I am wrong though.

A lot of ifs and buts, however I think he has one more year left and can still be valuable to the team. As for his replacement, I don't think we have one. Lange is too short, maybe someone will surprise and come up through the ranks.

It will be a surprise as there aren't too many tall bacmen on our list.

Apparently a couple of months back, someone kicked down Mick's side gate and stole his doberman!!!! (no joke)

This is the bloke to tell Mick to retire, and then to take over at full-back.
My suspicion is he has a touch of George "The Animal" Steele about him if you know what I mean...

You'll be able to tell in the first few games whether Mick is Gawn. If he starts falling over in contests of strength that he would have previously won easily then that's it for Mick. It's always the way "strength" players finish up. We better upgrade mark Hilton as soon as we can and work on him big time!!

I have said this before!!

There are only 5 players on the list with the stature to be considered for a backline key position :

McCartney
Martyn
Watt
Colbert
Carey

Of these Watt would have to show a dramatic improvement on previous form .

Colbert is fast becoming a high salaried injured dud.May turn out the worst trade deal done in 30 years since John Pitura.

Martyn has a contract to play this year and will give it his best shot.

My tip is that mid year you will find:

Martyn on the bench or injured,
McCartney at Fullback
Watt playing in the VFL
Colbert in the Medical rooms
Carey at Centre Half Back
McKernan at Centre Half Forward
Lindsay Smith and Burton as the Rucks.

Round 17 1996. North played Melbourne. Rex Hunt was commentating. He stated that the 1996 season would be Micks last. Mick must think that some people are pretty stupid.

Groucho

You mentioned Mark Hilton being a possible replacement.

I agree, after going up to see us play Bendigo in the VFL last year, he had a lot of agro in him, pushing his opponent to the ground twice with no effort at all.

Maybe Denis fails to see this.

LastCall, that's a bit rough on Micky.

I don't think he's got worse over the past couple of years, maybe slowed down a little, but put that down to injury.

I'll agree with you if he has a shocker year in 2001 (fingers crossed he won't).
