To anyone considering doing a trade I would say do so based on the last 30-40 years rather than the last 5-10. I can't speak for other cap cities but over here tradies earn big dollars and have had no shortage of work (hence the big dollars) for quite a while, driven by the mining and housing booms - which won't last forever.

There is always going to be work for sparkies, brickies, chippies etc. but if there is always work 40+ hours a week for significantly above the median wage then I will be very surprised.

The trick is to find a trade that also involves work AFTER a building is complete. Ie repairs and maintenance. But these involve lots of technical knowledge usually. You need to be smart enough to have at least passed year 12.

Ive also found most apprentices know someone that got them a start, so you need to network. Very rarely will a random get in or be able to survive. This might not apply to all trades though.

You arent too old btw, i started my app when i was 21 after being in the industry for 3 years. I found the older apps made better tradies in general because they WANTED to learn, the youngins were there because they wanted to "do a trade".
