This is a pointless thread that i am sure has been raised before.Everybody that appreciates this great man would all state the obvious answer.Kirk not being the one and only captain of the Swans is probably the only real bad decision Roos has made in regards to what represents the team from a leadership perspective. It is in no means detrimental to the team because all 3 captains are great leaders but Brett Kirk is in Paul Kellys class as a captain and deserves the honour on his own.Weather religious or not all Swans supporters should get down on their knees and pray to their maker that Kirk can play on for at least another couple of years. That being the case the least Roos could do is hand the reigns over to him by himself and reward him for what has been a truly inspirational career of a sportsman who has given his club and its supporters every ounce of his heart and soul and sent me to work on a Monday morning more often than not with a smile on my face due to his heroic feats.Didnt mean to demean the thread.Thats my rant and now i am off to St Paricks to say a few Hail Marys.:thumbsu:
Pointless thread? If this thread was pointless, why did so many reply?

It's not necessarily a pointless thread because you're so convinced he deserves it. It's true that it seems to be pretty much a consensus (me included), but aside from that the issue still raises interesting questions;

  • Why are we persisting with the shared leadership group? Will this continue for as long as Roos is coach?
  • Is one leader always preferrable to a group, or only when there is a clear standout?
  • Is there benefit to having a defensive/midfield/foward 'captain'?
Plus it gives us a chance to e-rim the great B.Kirk :)

Love the passion though :thumbsu:

I agree with a leadership group of 6 to 8 or so players, the ones who step up at training and help the young kids settle in and whatnot. This could include guys like MOL, Leo, O'Keefe, Goodes, Hall etc.

I don't like the idea of a captain for forwards/midfield/defence...it's kind of dumb. What if there were no older, standout players in the backline for example? It's like naming a captain just for the hell of it. It's a massive honour in my opinion and it shouldn't be taken lightly.

I think the current idea of having 3 captains came about when Kel and Maxfield retired, and there was no clear standout for captain. Now there is.

As for being captain of our footy club, it should just be Brett Kirk. And Craig Bolton as vice captain k thanks :D

Welcome back Bedford from an enforced layoff i presume.Never mind its just good to have a poster back on the board that actually posts with a passion and astuteness that few others on here have.Sadly i dont think you will be joined by probably the best poster on the Swans board in the past,The Natural. If he suffered the same fate as you i think we might have heard the last of him.Was very knowledgable about the game that fellow and didnt bother wasting time on People that dont know the game.Like my goodself, who has been accused of coming out of the woodwork words will be used sparingly unless replying to genuine football people like yourself or Rancid.Just as a matter of interest Bedford would you consider somebody that lives in Port Melbourne and has followed The Bloods for 40 years as one that has come out of the woodwork ? Please forward your reply to Bradmanstand guy if you wouldnt mind.

IMO he should have been made sole captain 4 years ago. I think its really important to have one captain and it could have made you into an even more successful team over the past few years.

OK I beg to differ. :p

The 3 captains mean:

1. They share any media post game committment... means more focus on playing.. it can be taxing when controversy occurs.
2. Up till recently they had one forward, one mid, one back.... notice they break into groups /coaches and each section has its plan! One can't cover all groups as well
3. Means when one is having an off day (hard to inspire in that condition ask Richie Vandenburg) then one other will be on top an in a position to "show" the way and lift the side
4. Means even out risk of ego and hearing the one bleating voice all the time (ala Nathan Buckley)
5. They each can look forward to their turn to lead out, toss coin, and be the designated spokesman/ leader for the outing. Special privilege
6. The captain has an equal who can say "Kirky you have to lift NOW!"
7. Promotes equality and evenness in team psyche

Wouldn't work for every team makeup or structure!

One of Roosey's best innovations:thumbsu:

The only downside is we all know Kirk appears to be the best leader of the lot and perhaps deserves more recognition.

My 2 cents:)

Reckon you hit the nail right on the head there Corps.
Our captaincy system has served us well since it's inception and I see no reason to change. When Leo's gone, Goodesy steps in. When (heaven forbid) Kirky goes, there's RyanO or Mal - actually a heap of capable, "inspirational" boys to fill the void.

Sorry if i upset you cinderella man.But our board was in decline not long ago,and thankfully we have now got more posters than ever before. There are a lot of young posters on our site now,and many have a good knowledge
of the modern game. Everyone who posts on our board gets to have their say
regardless of the merit of the post. The trick is not to get too serious.
Lighten up mate and start posting!
