Should the AFL adopt a 1- and 3-point system?

Something I've been thinking about for some time.

A System the AFL could introduce whereby teams that win or lose by under a certain amount of points will be awarded 3 or 1 points respectively.

Before you poo-poo this idea, imagine the changes this would make. Teams would no longer just stop because they thought they had the game in the bag and teams who came oh, so heart-breakingly close to winning would be rewarded for a job well done nonetheless.

Also, this should see an end to teams wasting time at the end of games just because they're a few points ahead.

Now, I know what you're going to say: "We've already got the percentage system to sort out how well teams went", but maybe this could give a better indication of how well teams are actually going.

So post your thoughts: Could I be onto something here? Do I have absolutely no idea whatsoever? Or is this just the mad ramblings of someone whose team "missed it by that much" on the weekend?

Nah, seriously, your idea has its good points but it would never be seriously considered. The game is already complicated enough as it is, this would probably just add to it.

He said 3 points if you win by less than a specified amount. And 1 point if you lose by less than a specified amount. I would say that amount would be somwhere around the 20 point mark.

Seems to me that it would gift extra points to any club playing another who is badly hit by injuries or suspensions.

What I would like to see is percentage dropped for points difference. The percentage system favours defensive play and attacking footy is what we want to see.

eg team A F 2000 A 1500 Percentage 133.33%
team B F 1500 A 1100 Percentage 136.34%

Currently team B would finish on top but team A has a points difference of 500 versus only 400 for team B.

I think that team A has performed better and more attractively and should be higher on the ladder.
