I umpired an U17 match with a countdown clock not too long ago.
Junk time took up the last 5 minutes of the quarter with them just chipping it around for minimal gain.
4x5=20 minutes of game time missed as a result of wasting time in junk time.
Couldn't imagine what it'd be like in the AFL.

Players can play according to how long is left.

I remember one game laughing at Casbault for looking like a spud passing it off with 2sec left and the siren going, but the poor bloke didn't even know how long was left. Otherwise he would have gone back and taken a shot. Things like this happen a fair bit.

Eagles almost cost themselves the win last round with Hurn telling the boys there was probably 4-5min left when really it was just a minute.
If you need how long is left to motivate urgency... seems a bit farcical tbh. The idea I suspect behind counting up is counter that directly, that you should be playing and giving your all constantly not just the end.

Junk time refers to the last few minutes of a game when the result is well beyond doubt. Not the last 5 minutes of each quarter. Your argument makes no sense.

Well just replace the words junk time with something else. Just time that is wasted because the quarter is almost over.

Soccer is one. And I think that's pretty stupid too. I see no reason the players shouldn't know exactly how much time is left. Why the big secret?
In scoccer most grounds will the clock stops at 45 and 90. You dont know how much stoppage time is left.

The 2010 Grand final draw? It was fun to see the "race against the clock" to score.

But goals after the siren situations are always better not knowing the time left.

That that game was on 7 instead of 10 is a disgrace. The fact that any games are on 7 is a disgrace regardless.

You really tell me that this is better being able to see how long is left?

Tradition.
Technically, traditionally there was no time at all and the timekeeper would blow the siren at the end of each quarter.

They simply added that time/duration of each quarter so everyone would know the length of the quarter.

The excitement of many a close game has been diminished due to knowing the exact time remaining. I can’t think of too many where it’s been enhanced by it.

IMO.

Exactly.

It is only a recent introduction to the game but it has ruined far to many games as a consequence.

We now see teams "icing the clock", a tactic pinched from some of the US sports but makes our game predictable & boring.

In a bygone era, the clock would start at 00:00 and just run as long as the time-keepers deemed it to be added immense suspense and ensured both teams went for the win instead of trying to protect a lead.

Far too many things in our game have been changed in the belief that it would be an improvement but ultimately they have been proven to be ill-fated changes, this is another of them.

Not telling you anything. Mearly posing the question as a possibility. You are free to make up your own kind.

I was entertained and on the edge of my seat watching the desperation as the clocked ticked down. Similar to the "ticking time bomb under the table" in movies. We know how long to go but the characters don't. That creates tension.

Would it have been better not knowing the time? Up to you to decide

How come on tv it is sometimes and sometimes not?

I totally think it should. Makes no sense not to. I think it makes it more exciting if anything.

Maybe not anymore but I definitely remember it sometimes used to count up.

It's been there since the 1990s except the period where Ten had some rights. They didn't show the clock for the last 5 minutes of each game to stop people changing the channel.
