You team is the only team that is free to just go out and make money. Adelaide could of been in a similar position, but seem to have chosen to run with a very South Australian pride image which again ties them to a bunch of traditions and expectations. West Coast are the capitalists in a league of socialists.

Yes Hawthorn has pokies. It does not make all supporters/members happy, but it is part of what makes the club financial. But the issue is, we need to find alternative forms of income (pokies, Tasmania etc...) because we didn't just start from scratch in 1986 with a whole state just excited we existed.

This is true but I for one wish we weren't.

Call me a romantic .. but as a fan I crave some of those traditions that our club seems to never want to promote.

I'll agree with you on AFL socialism but that's about it. At the end of the day we're just another AFL club. It's not our fault that the AFL, the AFL website, Channel 7 and the larger Victorian media is intensely Melbourne-focused and largely ignores both the tradition and current plight of non-Victorian clubs. So living in Melbourne, I can understand if you think non-Victorian clubs have no culture or history because it is never discussed. That doesn't mean its not discussed or appreciated elsewhere.

Perhaps we could use Melbourne as a feeder team, they tank for the picks and pass the better players over to us on the cheap.

The flaw in your logic is relying on Melbourne to pick good players with those picks.

The end result of all this is that we have we have around $45 million in cash and equivalents sitting in the bank, not doing a whole lot.*

It's not costly for the WC, especially if just winning games and running a good business is the goal, which is not 'wrong'. Infact in the current financial enviroment, it makes more sense. If the AFL was a free market, It would basically be dominated by your lot, Collingwood and Adelaide. There are people that support my club, 'the family club', that would prefer we ran more like that. However, like all the Victorian sides do to varying extents, and Fremantle, Sydney, Brisbane and Port have done, there has been a greater emphasis placed on the history of the club, and values (and politics) that are associated with it. It makes it more complicated. I am actually from Perth, I got into VFL because of the Eagles, I followed the Eagles for the first couple of years they were in the comp, but if you asked me what team I was most passionatly into, I would have said West Perth, the side my family had always supported. I then went to live a couple of years in the Eastern States, and because of a couple of friends, I started watching the Hawks. I prefered how the clubs in Victoria ran, more like the WAFL clubs had been. Training sessions were open and there was a social club which you could be a part of if you wanted. The Eagles were not like that, and as far as I understand are still not like that (is there a West Coast social club?). Of course Victorian sides are not as much like that these days, but they have had to retain many of the traditional aspects. For example, Hawthorn deliberately have based themselves in ground they share with the community. It sucks as far as privacy goes, but they felt it was important to continue to engage in a visible way with the Eastern Suburbs.

I think a lot of this will change with the move to Lathlain. Eagles will then have a community based space they control and will be able to engage more easily. I think the best thing that could come from the Eagles buying MFC is access to second hand furniture. Ship the furniture West, throw the players on the footpath for council collect.

I've not really followed it, but from what I know, it would seem that is part the idea.

But on the purchase, if the MFC comes with the contents of the Long Room, then it might be a very worthwhile deal.
