His time as head of list management wasn’t a glorious success.

And the club believes initially that Burton was a massively upgraded on the old plodder that came before (Noble)

OK I must admit you have a better memory than I do. I cant argue with that. But he did get a lot of recognition at the Lions. By the way I voted. By the way I voted No. I am just frustrated that we appear to be going nowhere. I am getting older and I need the club to start to show progress. I think Robbo calls it hope. I would like to get some hope about our club.

After watching AFL360 tonight I find myself asking,,,.why is everyone in the Vic media saying that the competition cant have north not being competitive so lets give them some additional help like priority picks. I havent heard boo out of the SA media or our club suggesting that we also need to be competitive so where is our help. We get two squirts of f##kall.

I reckon we'll have Neil Balme as soon as Richmond are done this year unless his health is worse than has been disclosed. We need someone with that sort of cache, who can come in and have immediate respect from everyone. Come in, do an internal review, then see through the changes. Bingo, proper foundations laid and the rebuild can start with confidence.

Noble really made a bad career decision to be a senior coach. He was on the path to be a CEO somewhere, which is what he really wanted IMO, but I don't see any club going near him with his reputation tarnished. Maybe the AFL will give him a job.

The only guy I would bring back from that era would be Matt Rendell.

I watched the same thing and was thinking that we are only a few games better than them over the last 3years and you don't hear a peep about why the crows should be competitive. All we hear about is how north can't allowed to sit at the bottom for years. What the **** do they think has been happening at the crows?

How did you come to that conclusion

To clarify, I was referring to Balme's AFL career. I suspect there are a lot of SANFL apologists (especially before/around the AFL era) in here, but I reckon, like for players, there's a big jump to the AFL. Not disputing Balme's SANFL record, but in the AFL he was relatively unsuccessful and found out. A bit like Bassett appeared like a great SANFL coach but at Port seems to be regarded (by their fans too) as a weak AFL assistant coach.

I'm obviously not suggesting Noble comes back in any coaching capacity, but as an administrator/part time consultant surely there's value.

I wasn't aware of him being a 'big part of the problems here' (expand, Sanders ?), but our record while he was here was close to the strongest in the AFL across that whole period. And at Brisbane they began to peak upon his arrival. Correlation doesn't imply causation of course, but I'd be surprised if success occurred wherever he was in spite of his incompetence.

I reckon our industry (and fans) have a warped perception of success. Very few teams achieve it each year. The reasons a team achieves it aren't often isolated to one individual (and at times could be in spite of one problematic one, for sure). But for some reason coaches & administrators are written off after one crack in a role if it hasn't immediately brought success, and this perception of 'any unknown option has to be better than person XYZ who had two years of mediocrity at insert club here'

The NBA and global soccer seem to approach it very differently. Failure is considered experience. Off field personnel generally are viewed in light of their strengths and weaknesses. A bloke can be sacked from one club and appointed by an equally successful club a week later. I'm not advocating this approach but I think somewhere in the middle works.

We all want the best people at the club, but clearly we both have different opinions as to quality people who are proven winners.

Yes I'm more than comfortable with an older Balme who makes success happen than a younger unproven person... even in a part-time role.

Experience often comes with age... though granted it's no guarantee of quality... but with the likes of Balme or Blight it is.
