Should we experiment with Moore as a back-man?

Where would you play Darcy?

"Firmly" seems a hasty reaction.

Firstly, we don't even know it's happening yet, but let's assume it is:

What if we are signing a big name KPF in 2018? Let's say it's Lynch. Then I think the move makes complete sense. In that scenario we need a star KPD. Anyone we'll draft will take too long. We don't have the currency to trade or sign both a KPF and a KPD. So the only way to complete our spine is to move Moore into defence. We then have a completed spine, and for mine, a completed list build for the start of 2019.

I think if Lynch is coming, then moving Moore back is pretty much essential. Two star key forwards and no star key backs is just not going to work. With Moore in defence and Lynch up forward we have a beautifully balanced spine and a team that is ready to compete. Keep Moore forward and we have McLarty, an ageing Reid and any drafted players as key backs going into 2019. That's just not good enough to compete seriously.

Alternatively if we're moving him back simply because we feel it's his best position and we don't have a KPF on the way, then I'd be against it too, but we need to wait and see the full context.

I'm well aware Moore to defence hasn't happened yet. I'm also well aware the club has only spoken of the idea as a pre-season trial. I added the caveat in my post that it was if it was a permanent or semi permanent move and posted on that basis.

When we're talking about things that haven't happened yet i'd say Lynch fits that! In that hypothetical do we move Moore back in the hope we snare Lynch to get ahead of the game? On the one hand it'd show foresight and balls. On the other, my strong preference is to develop a Lynch and Moore forward combo.

That would be one heck of a combo. You'd have the tactical flexibility to throw Moore into the ruck or behind the ball as circumstance dictates. Safe in the knowledge Lynch is the anchor and you don't sacrifice forward structure doing it. It would take a lot of pressure off Moore not needing to hold the forward line together and I reckon he'd come into his own as a forward in that environment.

I appreciate you have a strong view to the contrary of that and would prefer to spread the talent and height. I just disagree. I see the potential for a great forward strength there in the scenario we land Lynch.

I also rate what we have on the list in defence. I like McLarty. I still think Reid has good footy in him. It'll be interesting to see if Dunn and Goldsack can maintain the rage. But that group buys us enough time to look at drafting and developing a key back this year and/or looking at a free agent option in two years time.

Giving Defence a year to settle and flourish with Moore so Lynch slotting in fwd in 2019 wont disrupt team balance. We'll be settled all over the park, well drilled, defensive gameplan down pat and be ready with Lynch to push for top 4. Like it.

Just not sure our avenue to goal next year tho..

We need him to be a really good forward
I think the biggest problem with Moore is he has no idea how to lead and get separation from his opponent.

And we don't have the right coaching staff to teach him leading patterns. Yes Anthony Rocca played key forward but he was slow, and leading wasn't part of his game.

Moore will do well back or forward and it won't do him any harm having a run down there. I think he is a forward but keen to see how he evolves

I reckon he needs to lift his intensity next season. If he does he will realise his full potential and be the match winner we need.
His intensity is fine he is still not fit enough. When you are there live you notice how long he spends on the pine. If he can improve his tank he will get to more contests

Hopefully he works harder in the off season then.

Rather us recruit a chb and leave Darcy forward.
But l guess they think there got Lynch who will move to chf leaving cox at full forward/ruck with Grundy going forward in2019.
Darcy and mcclarty if comes on like they hope could make the bones of a very good back line.
Still rather forward with stints back when the game calls for it.

If he could get to the same spots as Blair, he'd be a star already.
He cannot cause Blair was already there and in the way.
In saying that, agree with above.

I reckon they should work as a modern twist on the old fashioned full forward with a forward pocket at his feet. Moore just follows Blair around and thus gets dragged into the best positions offering us a serious aerial threat where we need it. Train Blair to know his limitations and not fly. That way we have someone at ground level where we need it. Unstoppable combo.

I'm confident Moore can play in defence and do well. But I don't think it's the best use of his talent for the team. I like the tactic of throwing him behind the ball to stem momentum. But only as a tactic and not a permanent move.

I agree wholeheartedly with this. I like the way Sydney do it with Sam Reid. He seems to have a licence to play either end depending on the state of the game.

The one thing is that Moore probably needs some training defensively, and some time with the defensive group. You don't want him going back and having no clue what to do, and also getting in the way of his other defenders. Clearly he needs some defensive training.

I think it will come pretty naturally to him given he played the role at under 18 level. But it might well mean he needs to divide his time this pre-season 50% forward and 50% back.

It might have short term implications, but long term should help him. Moore is too good to rust up forward when we are not giving enough supply....and he is too good to play down back permanently. But it won't happen automatically...he'll need training.

Moore can play all over the field so even if he starts in the backline, there's nothing stopping him moving forward when the team has the ball and kicking a few goals as a backman. He and Reid can alternate between the two halves of the ground depending on the situation and confuse the opposition as to whom they need to man up on.

Can foresee Moore and Reid being even more confused than the opposition, culminating in them colliding in the centre circle.

The idea of moving Darcy to the backline on anything more than an occasional basis is ridiculous. This kid is tracking on par with Joe Daniher at the same age, who in my view is the best physical comparison for Darcy. A couple of years could see an explosion in output for Moore up forward provided he gets the reps he needs. At the same age (Moore in bold - Daniher's advantages in red):

Kicks: 7.2 to 6.7
Handballs: 3.2 to 3.7
Disposals: 10.5 to 10.4
Marks: 6.0 to 5.0
Goals: 1.2 to 1.6
Behinds Per Game: 0.9 to 1.1
Tackles Per Game: 1.9 to 1.6
Hitouts Per Game: 3.0 to 2.0
Inside 50s Per Game: 2.4 to 1.8
Contested Possessions Per Game: 5.3 to 5.2
Uncontested Possessions Per Game: 5.9 to 5.6
Effective Disposals Per Game: 7.3 to 6.9
Disposal Efficiency % Per Game: 69.5% to 66.3%
Clangers Per Game: 2.4 to 3.0
Contested Marks Per Game: 1.8 to 1.6
Marks Inside 50 Per Game: 1.9 to 2.1
Disposal Efficiency % Per Game: 69.5% to 66.3%
Clangers Per Game: 2.4 to 3.0
Contested Marks Per Game: 1.8 to 1.6
Marks Inside 50 Per Game: 1.9 to 2.1

Realistically we have 2 of the 5 spine in place for a future tilt at the flag... great list management
You're not taking into account McClarty - 2018 development year with some senior games and comes in 2019 "promising"
