grayham, I think you're missing the point.

Firstly, it is a free site run by a bunch of very dedicated fans in their own spare time. It has also been pointed out a few times that the problem lies with the host of the site rather than a lack of action on Des's behalf.

I think the problem lies in the decision to value old posts over up-time.

Secondly, The fact that there is a independent and well-run fan site reflects very well on the Swans and their following. I doubt outside fans would really care whether RWO is up or down. In fact, without naming names, a few other clubs don't have fan sites and would be envious of the quality and following RWO has generated over the past few years.
Whats worse - no fan site, or a fan site thats unusable ?
Could you imagine the pies or blues fan sites being down this long?

Finally, the fact that there has been such a commotion raised by its absence shows how valued it is by its members. If you want to leave, that's fine, but I doubt you'll find many other following your lead.

You are trying to make this a personal issue. I'm weighing up the benefits of Bigfooty-swans area (here) vs RWO. Site v Site, not person v person.

Man, some people need to just cool it. RWO is a free site, as has been outlined by many people, that has been attacked by some tool. I love RWO, I don't post much but read it all the time, some people who contribute have a massive love and understanding of the Swans and AFL. RWO in fact gives me a better understanding of the game and the tactics our mighty team employ week to week than any of the press I get in Sydney.

So whoever looks after and runs RWO, I hope it's all up and running soon and cheers for the effort you put in.

No fan site as opposed to a site that is temporarily down.

I don't see this has to become a bigfooty v RWO issue. Posting on either site doesn't have to be mutually exclusive. Plenty of us do it, although I can understand why a few RWO regulars don't like posting here.

This thread is Bigfooty-swans board vs RWO. Any attempt to draw personalities, or the larger bigfooty into it is a smoke screen.

The main Pies site closed down.

Either put your money where your mouth is and build your own (better) site, or do as the rest of us are doing and wait patiently until RWO is back up.

Des has better things to do, no doubt, than respond to your beck and call. You are coming across as incredibly petulant and spoilt.

Quite frankly if you think you can do a better job Barry/Grayham whatever you are, I encourage you to get in and do it - start your own site, get the content up and running, get the messageboards running with a team of mods to look after 1000-odd members, deal with the standard lines of bull******** people like you love to throw out day in day out, deal with trying to get the money each year to ensure people have a site to come back to for the following season and then try to have a normal life outside that - a 9-5 job, outside interests, family, friends etc. Get in there, do it yourself by all means because clearly you can do a better job.

The pies have always had 3 or 4 sites at any one time.

For how long ?

Attacking me in that manner makes you look petulant I fear.
Have I called Des names, or you, or anyone else here ?
Does anyone disagree that it would be better to have it up with a few lost posts than down indefinately?

I have made it quite clear that I do that already in other areas.

I have no desire to start a new swans site as there is already 2 in the market: here and RWO - when it comes up.

At this stage, either, or it doesn't make a difference. Both of those options have an end result of not being able to use a fan site, so what the heck?

All these RWO threads goes to show that we really care about RWO because it's all we ever talk about and if we all want it back that much, be bloody patient!

Lots of people are taking RWO for granted. Des can't sustain his life to the computer, he as a life outside of his house too.

If there is anyone to blame or have a go at, make your way to the webhosts. Des could've easily given the site up and forgot about it completely. But I doubt that would've happened.

Guys, guys, guys... Let's settle down and take a couple of deep breaths in the quiet corner, shall we? (quite clearly, this name calling is "unnaseptable")

While I do appreciate the support, Grayham has made a couple of points relating to websites in general that are quite valid, if a little condescending in places.

It would have been better if I had kept more regular backups, or we'd received faster responses from the webhosts, or if none of this had happened in the first place. The decision to do what I did came about after considering a few factors:

- Reluctance to spend time applying a quick-fix (didn't know that the backup would take so long to be restored!)
- Availability of an alternative forum already familiar to many RWO regulars

As well as missing posts, we have missing users, forum and user access levels to set up and missing articles. A fair bit of work, hence my preference to wait for the backup.

As mentioned earlier in this thread, I'll open up the old forum later tonight if the backup hasn't surfaced by then so we can continue posting (bearing in mind that anything new will of course disappear again when the PROPER backup arrives). We'll be back and running soon, I hope. At that point, people can choose to go back to RWO, continue posting on both, stay on BF, or whatever they like!

I've been one of the people to take RWO for granted - I generally spend more time reading it than posting, but do appreciate the efforts of Des and the mods for keeping it going - and I enjoy reading the match reports too, to give a different perspective from what you read in the media all the time. I'm pretty impressed with the quality of writing/analysis in some of the reports, thanks to all those who took the time to write them.

But Bigfooty is pretty good too - there are the Sandpit style "non-footy-related" forums here if anyone gets really bored I guess ;) It does take guts to post on the AFL board though, with all the trolls, and people ready to attack you if you dare say a negative word about THEIR club

I have 2 questions for Des:

1. Can we go from the August 2004 data, but if more recent back up arrives, we use that (if possible)?
2. 100x100 avatars?

Thanks for the update Des. And there's a good chance that many of us have backup copies of match reports, etc so we should be able to largely rebuild that part of the site, too.

Do match reports matter anyway? Is it for reference to look back on or what because after I've read a report or article, I move on.

Something is not quite right about being on Bigfooty. Not that there is anything wrong with the site, it is just that ROK has disappeared.

Look at it this way, RWO is our family home, it suffered some fire damage, due to a pot being left on the stove.

The insurance company is trying to get it repaired ASAP, but as the old saying goes Rome wasn't built in a day.

In the meantime we have a temporary home until our real home it rebuilt.

That ROK guy seems very popular !! It does not make sense that he was banned :(

That seems a bit unfair ! Well i hope he comes back so i can see why people like him so much

What on earth did that ROK guy do ? every post about him just gets deleted by the Mods

Not the case at all, Nick.

He was banned for breaking the rules. As has been stated several times, we aren't allowed to go into why he was banned, but he is now free to post on all boards except the Sydney one (which he will also be able to return to in due time).

So, there's nothing new to the story - nothing to get excited about. It's over.

Good onya for reinstating the posts, i for one was suspicious coz the other Mod kept deleting any reference to him !

That sort of behaviour just makes everyone think it is a personal vendetta against the poor bloke

I am sure it is a storm in a teacup :D
