Should We Sign Jordy Now?

Has the bottoming right out and loading up on draft picks theory worked for any club? Maybe you could say it did for Melbourne, but I don't want to watch the Pies being that bad for that long. How many top picks have the Blues had over the last 20 years - might be beginning to get ready to compete with most of those picks having come and gone.
I’m not suggesting the need to bottom out, only that the salary cap will be a vital consideration in what is offered to any player who is out of contract. Particularly players who would attract attention from other clubs.

We don’t have many of those.

The question this thread is centred around is absurd.

Neither party would be interested in negotiating a contract at this stage of the season.

The club wants to wait and so does Jordy. He wants to produce great footy and maximise his value.

Six pages of wasted energy.

Agreed nothing will start getting serious until after the bye at least, because Jordan will be trying to boost his value to the club and other clubs through a top season and the club will be seeing if he can keep his head out of his fundamental off field.

Wouldn't consider over his present contract + performance and behavior bonuses for 4 years no matter how good a season he has. He has a lot to make up for.

That being said he has a narky side to his character so I'm thinking he will show the club the finger and walk with FA at the end of the season.

Henry is going to be a gun, he's not going anywhere, just because his brother plays for Geelong doesn't mean anything, plenty of brothers playing at different clubs. I would keep Henry before DeGoey
Henry might be a gun. I am a fan, he and Ginny ( ND excepted) are the best looking kids to me. But going to be a gun is a step too far. He has more to do before we say that.

Home to Geelong has to be a risk. Its not just brothers playing together. The big 4
1. Grew up in Geelong and family lives there
2. Grew up supporting Geelong (least important)
3. Brothers playing together
4. A surfer and apparently very good (very important)

If it could be done easily Ollie would be down the highway without a thought.

I would think Collingwood should be thinking that and have a beneficial trade as a real option. Not that it will happen but the possibility needs to be considered.

De Goey is a rare beast. Someone who has shown he could be an elite goal kicking mid. $800k would be getting him on the cheap. His recent body of work is the type that is often rewarded by much better contacts than what we will be offering him. Sign him now while the BS charges of the off season are still having an effect. List managemnt 101

Yeah, number 4 is the biggest worry. I don't get all the talk about brothers being so keen to play in the same team. I sure as hell have no desire to work with my brother. Are you keen on working with sideswipe.

I just don't think any of that will make any difference. I know the signs might point in that direction and in a perfect world it might be the case, If he was interstate it might make a difference but geelong is only up the road

I have also heard rumours from my source (a player agent) that De Goey will not sign at Collingwood. He does not appreciate the club's stance towards him and has decided to ignore the offers.
That's going to be a hard sell at interviews with other clubs. Pretty sure all clubs would have taken the same stance

It’s also a phenomenally stupid approach to a negotiation. To create competitive tension you want to invite offers from all - especially from your current employer.

That’s why it reads like b/s. In my experience, managers outside the negotiation- if that’s really the source - speculate and bullshit just as much, if not more, than dickheads on BF.

It’s kind of hard to imagine given the massive age difference.

There are lots of rumours in management circles and one of them is JDG ain't signing. Gold Coast is the team that keeps coming up. There was a rumour about Dusty and Jordy going up to the Suns, AFL encouraging them to build the brand.

You know that if there are “lots of rumours”, it makes all of them even less likely to be true?

You are coming up with illlogical negotiating tactics and a double trade involving the biggest name in the game who is contracted until 2024… Are you thinking this might be make believe?

I have 5 brothers and have played in teams with 4 of them. Sidey is the one I missed so I would have loved playing footy with him. There I've said it. I even changed teams when playing over 35's mainly to play with one of my brothers. Likewise golf or surfing which are the other passions I would choose to play with my brothers or kids above anyone else.

I guess it depends on where you stand with family whether thats important. I get the impression they are close so wouldn't surprise if its something they would be pretty keen on. As a senario if I was in that position, move to home area, play for my childhood team with a brother and be near the surf that would be a dream. So I can easily see it as something that might happen.

My issue with Jordy is that he keeps finding himself in sticky situations. Regardless of whether he did or not, he should never have been in some of the things he has been. The problem with JDG attached to your brand is the media just pump out crap. Other issue is he goes missing. At his best, he's great. At his worst, he's barely noteworthy.
Some of us remember the exact same post about Dane Swan.
I hate the fact that a "brand" is something that a football fan gives a shit about.
Brands are for soccer.
"brand" is a peice of shit media construct.', like "culture"
Catch phrases to pigeon hole individuality.
People who fall for the lie are just lazy.

If it clicks for De Goey, he's basically like a prime Dustin Martin, with a less damaging kick. But even a slightly less damaging by foot Dusty is in the convo for best player in the league. It's a fine line to walk, and we should be giving him the season to prove he can be consistent. It's also possible the prior environment with Buckley in charge wasn't conducive to him buying in and staying on the straight and narrow, and the change in the coaching department might change that. Hopefully it's a Steve Johnson type moment where he turns it around and ends up staying.

Does this matter? I know he may be on the nose for some sponsors, but he is undoubtedly also fantastic entertainment - both as a footballer and the soap opera. I'd be surprised if he was a negative in terms of sponsorship overall. And lets face it, if he delivers on the field - and he looks set to - like Dusty before him, he'll be the best, most-covered story in footy. So whilst there is risk - the potential upside is enormous - both for the club and for sponsors.

Brand image does matter to me. I want players who make headlines for right reasons. JDG will always have his criminal record attached.

His criminal record is a DUI offence. Nothing else. Luke Hodge (and many others) has one too. But now we are getting to the nub of your confirmation bias connected to bullshit rumours. You want him to go, so you believe the fairy tales.

He may not have a criminal record beyond speeding and DUI, however, he does have a bad habit of lying, being involved in fights (there was that one with his dog and he was involved in some form of altercation in NY). You may not ever be convicted but it still travels with you. He generates headlines about these activities. Hodgey did not lie about a dog, speed on his motorcycle and do a heap of other things JDG has done. You can Google the whole list but driving without a license, not displaying plates, drink driving ... these seem insignificant but at the same time, travel with Collingwood and taint the brand.

Now, I don't believe the fairy tales, but I can say that he has a bad habit of finding himself in bad situations. Even Fly admitted this. NY should never have even happened.

I really don't need to get into a BF argument, but these are my thoughts on JDG.

This is a joke right your are deadset delusional mate this is how you support your club and player so by your logic we should of got rid of swanny for fighting Didak for being in a car that shot at cops both shaw boys and maxy for betting and lying all by the way contributed to our premiership also you must be proud we got rid of Stevo for his betting you must be happy now josh Thomas retired too the coke head can’t have these people ruin our BRAND jordy is a gun and any club would sign him in a heartbeat so that should tell you enough stop whinging

Come on sr the voluntary work was forced on him to make up for his misdemeanors.

Anyway it's a moot point he is gone as a FA at the end of the season.

Was referencing the voluntary training me thinks.

Edit: as discussed in later posts.

I think we should have a crack, sign him for 4 years, 800k. I have seen enough of our new coach to have faith he can get the best of JDG.

He’s one of ours, imagine the melts if he fulfilled his potential elsewhere.

Some of our best have been a little loose at times. I’ll stay away from calling them out.
