Anyone can open a burger bar. The problem is that many people opt to eat at the name brand chains even when they have a choice of better and cheaper food. Where I often get lunch there are lines out of the door for expensive franchise Vietnamese (Roll'd), expensive franchise Mexican (Mad Mex), a couple of sandwich and sushi places. Whereas the family run Sri Lankan cafe serving up cheap, delicious, home cooked meals is half empty. Go figure.
There are two sides to the problem, that phenomenon and the fact that owners of retail space prefer franchise brands.

Yeah nah. My son started working at Coles. With all the paperwork he didn't even realise that he had joined the SDA. It turned out that the SDA deal with Coles ripped him off to pay him less than award rates. The SDA was paying commision fees to Coles in return for guaranteed memberships that gave them power at Labor conference and for MP selection.

Sda has always been unrepresentative swill

Be nice to start a lot of these unions again from scratch

What if the workers didn't sign up to these low pay rates? No workers = no burgers = no profits.

From what I've read people are paid a trainee rate after signing up to a traineeship. Why not just say no and work elsewhere for proper pay? If grilld can't hire anybody they'd have to change their ways

Whats frigtning is the what seems the coolest places for youngsters to spend their cash. Amazon ebay uber grilld eTc etc treat their workers the worst, particularly young workers
This is a phenomenon where the millenial style crowd demands justice and fairness but then financially support the mega social media and mega retail businesses that definently aren't the good guys

Yes, it is pathetic how woke society is yet so corporate. Almost like it is a political philosophy handed down from on high ... oh no, they are all free thinkers, all of them the same freethinker as the other.

Arent you complaining about millenials embracing socialism in past threads. Now you are complaining about them all embracing corporates. Which is it? Or maybe they dont all have the same views cos you know, they are different independent thinkers?

Yeah but how many people want the hassle of lodging a fair work complaint?
You complain to the employer and the shifts are gone, and the source of income is taken away
You complain to the relevant authority and IF they investigate, and the percentage odds of an investigation happening are probably ~ 5%
Then if investigated, you go through the stress, probably no shifts between and wait 12 months to possibly get back paid

If Directors of companies were personally responsible for underpayemnst and Jail time was a high possibility outcome, we might see a dramatic decrease in wage theft
If they all agreed to lodge individual complaints together things would get done. Unions only work if everyone joins.

imo the existence of these chains are itself the problem. a more just world would have no grill’d, young people could open their own burger bars without needing to be employed by a franchisee who himself is being extorted by the parasitic parent company.
Why is that your definition of a just world?

Heard of economies of scale.

I don't agree with everything the bloke says, but to me that just sounds like someone with independent thought.

In which threads do I complain about millennials embracing socialism? Please post evidence.

No I have never heard of economies of scale. But I’m not sure how the $15 burgers of Grilld are achieving these so called “economies of scale” better than the similar priced but higher quality burger from your local independent burger restaurant.

Using Unions is fighting one wrong with another wrong. How about we just use the legal process to get these companies doing the right. They are breaking the law.
Because the coalition government cuts the funding for every single organisation thats there to police them.

Because these big companies give the coalition election funding to get office then give politicians no show jobs when they finish in politics.

The biggest funding problem the australian and other governments have is multinationals not paying a dime in tax

One of the first acts abbott did when in power was to gut the part of the tax department that investigates multinationals.

Why is this little cause and effect so hard to understand?

If the independent is cheaper and better quality then why does it not prosper at grilleds expense?

Why does Subway exist?
brand awareness which reduces the hurdle rate associated with investment. This is a good feature of the product. I know what Im going to get. i know the risk of being disapointed is low. More uncertainty with independents thus they have to be superior in other ways. And if they cant then they correctly fail.

Why do you think this is wrong?

People have the ability to check whether the local sandwich shop is better value than Subway directly from their pocket. But they don’t.

Subway is garbage yet ubiquitous. In a better world no one would eat Subway.
