5 Johnc ock - Played consistent good footy all game.
4 Burns - would we have even kicked five goals without him?? Kicked his quota and set up more.
3 Bode - Good game again.
2 Stenglein - Did his job well as usual.
1 Bickley - Tried hard and gave a decent contest all night.

Ricciuto needs to have a looong hard look at himself. Apart from the frees in the first quarter his look away handpass to Burns in the last quarter was pathetic and gave Burns no chance. Might help to look and see what traffic was coming Mark!

Gallagher coughed up the ball a bit but he will get better. He was not the only one too, although perhaps his were more glaring and damaging.

Carey was done by Wakelin but didn't stop trying.

What is up with Stevens??

We did not look like a final 8 team in this game, let alone a premiership contender.

The only good I can see was Burns. Thank God for Ronnie!!

Maybe you should stop living in 1998 and watch a Port game from the last two years.

You have to admit that Port play a defensive game. Their ultra go slow tactics at some points in the game and continual flooding back made it frustrating to watch. Sure, they kick some big scores against lesser teams but against the top teams they always have low-scoring affairs. We generally only kick low (<80) scores twice a year and they are against Port.

Yup, i rated Edwards game higher than Johnc*cks. Thats because i didnt really rate Johnc*cks game. I watched the replay again just to watch him closely as i was sure a lot of his "damaging possesions out of defence" ended up in the arms of a Port player.
I worked out he had 12 effective disposals (meaning a teammate had the next disposal after his) and 8 ineffective disposals (meanning a port player had the next disposal after his), and played a part in only 1 goal - his own. He didnt look overly damaging from what i could see.
Meanwhile, his opponent had the 3rd most disposals for Port, kicked 3 goals, played a role in 4 others and was probably Ports 2nd most creative forward behind Cornes.

I thought Bode, Bickley, Edwards and probably Burns had better games than Johnc*ck.

I dont think so.

Sure some of our players took a while to kick the ball at points in the game. But whats the point in kicking the ball straight away if there is no option?? Everytime we held up the ball it was to wait for either Tredrea, Cornes, or Brogan to make their way over to where the next marking contest would be. Or do you suggest we play a 'Simon Goodwin' plan of booting the ball as high and as long as possible, which gives the forwards minimal chance of marking the ball just so we move the ball a bit quicker? If there is no option presenting itself straight away, why would you kick it?

And im sorry but when we have 4 of our top 6 or 7 most creative players missing (Primus, Francou, Dew, Montgomery) and Kingsley (who i dont personally rate, but he provides more run than any of our other defenders) then of course we arent gonna be as creative and as running as usual.

We play to our strengths against the Crows. The Crows seem to play their usual gameplan of play on at all costs and bombing it in long to the forward line most of the time. Maybe if you looked for an option instead of bombing it in all the time then you might beat us one day!

Sure, they kick some big scores against lesser teams but against the top teams they always have low-scoring affairs.

In the last 2 years against top 8 sides weve kicked:

2001
14.15 (vs Brisbane H)
16.11 (v Essendon A)
23.15 (v Adelaide H)
13.10 (v Melbourne H)
17.14 (v Hawthorn A)
10.18 (v Sydney A)
10.10 (v Carlton H)
14.12 (v Richmond H)
8.12 (v Brisbane A)
15.14 (v Essendon H)
16.11 (v Adelaide H)

3 <80 scores there.

2002
11.7 (v Kangaroos H)
11.16 (v Melbourne A)
14.6 (v Adelaide H)
20.13 (v West Coast H)
11.6 (v Brisbane A)
14.7 (v Collingwood H)
16.12 (v Essendon A)
10.10 (v Kangaroos A)
17.14 (v Melbourne H)
12.12 (v Adelaide H)
14.19 (v West Coast A)
13.12 (v Brisbane H)

3 <80 scores there too.

Adelaide, in the same time frame, also had 6 <80 scores against top 8 sides.

But dont let the facts get in the way now will ya!

We generally only kick low (<80) scores twice a year and they are against Port.

Thats because we seriously exploit your main weakness (entry into the forward line). Goodwin, Riccuito, Bode, Bickley and Stenglien may be very good footballers, but their entry to your key forwards is abysmal at the best of times. Carey played crap because you bombed it in long to him all night expecting him to take contested mark after contested mark. We exploit this poor delivery to your forwards time and time again.
In the last two years your no.1 forward (stevens) has had 4, 8, 4 and 4 marks in the 4 Showdowns (im not counting last weeks as he hardly played). Compare that to Tredrea who in the last 5 showdowns (saturdays, the 2 2002 games and the last 2001 game) has had 4, 10, 7, 12 and 8 marks.

Your main strength is known to be your midfield....your main weakness is also known to be your poor entry into the forward line, and converting your high Inside50 stats into scoring oppurtunities.

Well im sorry, but if you cant change your gameplan to counteract how we play and to actually feed your key forwards for a change then that isnt Ports problem. You continue to blow entry into your forward line, we'll continue to exploit this and defeat you.

It was a counter-attacking style of play they deployed on Saturday night and it worked a treat...

Play a sort of elastic defence when the opponent has the ball then wait for the turnover and hit back with hard running and precision passing.

It was indeed frustrating for us because we're Crows fans, but from a 'neutral' perspective it was modern football at its best. Choco made Ayres look like a clown, and he did it with many of his first choice weaponary out.

As me and my mate were walking back to the car at Seaton Ramblers we mentioned that if we (Adelaide) had've gone into that showdown with the equivalent missing men that Port had - ie McLeod out instead of Francou... Clarke out instead of Primus (bad example)... Goodwin out instead of Dew and Smart out instead of Montgomery... we would've conceded the match before the first bounce just like all those seasons when we used the 'No Rehn, No Crows' excuse.

Fullmarks to Port Adelaide - we can't say a thing.

Right here we go...
