Review Showdown 59

I actually don't think tonight was a case of being mentally weak at all. We actually came back when challenged. Tonight was a lot of skill execution errors and giving them way too much latitude out the back of the contest. We set up one way and that was for us to win it on the inside and when we didn't they had too much free space. Their disposals were only mildly better than ours in the end when it counted. Both teams had some really poor execution

Very true

Again, I hated the result, but geez it felt good to be emotionally invested in the game again - which is a complete turnaround from the last few years. Hinkley's departure has been a godsend!!!

I can't even stomach hearing him behind a mic

What a game. The ending was brutal and I didn't see it coming. 2 goals in the final minute of play. I went through all the emotions those final 5 mins. At the end I just laughed as it's the most entertained I've been in a long time watching Port. Too many positives this season to be mad.

agreed

since the 43-point loss to North Melbourne our losses have been 2 points, 14 points, 3 points & now 1 point

this from a team playing tonight with
  • 6 players under 25 games
  • 3 players under 50 games &
  • 5 players under 90 games

we are definitely going in the right direction

we just have to get games into them this year and maybe next ...

Yes, we have lost three games by less than a goal. Win those three and we would be in the eight and possibly the top four.

Just need to turn the close losses into wins before the end of the season. Make sure that close losses don't become too associated with this playing/coaching group.

Two big positives from the last three weeks are:
1) the way we are defending. Against Geelong we defended the whole ground very well. Against the Crows we defended the back 50 well.
2) Efficiency of getting scores for inside 50 entries. Goal conversion would bolster this further.

Tackling to create HTB decisions is also working well.

Berry probably gets the Showdown medal.
Had this sick feeling from the get go when they dominated all the important stats for almost the entire 4 qtrs.

Should have smashed us, but they were so bad they couldn’t do it, hence my rage that we didn’t elevate our game enough.

The only stat we won was scoring efficiency inside forward 50, which kept us in front for most of the game.

But our continual dumb errors kept gifting them goals and kept those d***wads close.

Hope Josh doesn’t sit them down and tell them to take positives out of the match. Absolutely torch them. Tell they can’t think that close is ok. Tell them we’ve lost one kick games to Eagles, Crows, Hawks and by a couple to the Saints, and we could be 7-1 now if we truly believed in ourselves.

It’s NOT good enough.
It’s a loser mentality to think that way.
Toughen up, stop s******g the bed, take responsibility and be men, not sheep in the big moments, or we’ll be a side that does it over and over ad nausea for years to come, and never be successful.

Be ruthless.
Act like winners.

I am not sure what stats you are looking at but we had more disposals, more hit outs, and for once we had more free kicks. You are right we didn't always use the footy to advantage.

To extrapolate a little further we lead the rebound stats 48-28 yet lost the inside 50's by 59-38. That suggests we moved the ball from defence OK but couldn't capitalise.

I also agree with your comment about dumb errors. Poor disposal has plagued us for the past decade and Carr has to ramp up the skill set drills at training.

We were pretty poor last night. Avg around the contest, a lot of pop outs and fumbles. Couldn’t transition as well as we have been all night except the last 10 mins. Thought we did well to hang in there as it looked to be blowing out early in the last, but that 10-15 min patch in the last was probably the best we played for the night. Very pleased with our defensive structure. Dissapointing end, although tbh one of the better teams probably gives us a touch up last night.

Most pleasing thing was seeing Berry and Whitlock have their moments in the last qtr when there was pressure on. Also loved Lai’s game

As disappointing as last night's loss was IMO a mentally weak team would have thrown in the towel when 14 points down at the mid point of the last term instead of fighting back and hitting the front with 40 seconds left on the clock.

Both teams c***** up opportunities to score throughout the game, it was the execution (or lack there of) of the 1 percenters in those vital final seconds that ultimately cost us the chocolates, but I'm confident Josh Carr and his assistant coaches will eventually sort that out.

The self entitlement of the fruit tingle crowd was on full display again last night because regardless of where either team is on the ladder Showdowns are their grand final which has been to the detriment of the bigger picture for that franchise for a very long time now, and long may it continue!

Sunny side up.

Last 7 days we played the top two H&A last season.
Belted one, led with 45 secs to go in the other.

Game before that, took one of this seasons premiership fancies to the final minute as well.

And whilst the concept of a best 23 is on talent, not on workrate or form, we’re down probably 6 of our best 23, whereas those three opponents have 1-3 at most.

And our game is not based on emotion or milestones or media campaigns, but on workrate and system and the stars getting embedded in the key position and young players getting the chance to develop in the heat of the game and being backed in.

If there’s was a pass mark for Josh Carr this season, I’d almost say he’s most of the way there. Just want to see how things hold during the stretch of winter and how form holds late when finals aren’t in the equation.

And (big) if we can convince Butters to stay, I’d feel very confident to have Carr lead this team with a big Bailey-type free agent coming in, and the four young draft prospects over the next 18 months.

Play on.

To lose 3 games by under a kick this year is concerning in that I don't want it becoming a trend.

The best teams win the close matches.

They didn't lose this because of a lack of effort - they lost it because of a lack of application in the final minute. Sweet moronically hacking the ball forward into space as opposed to keeping the ball close in congestion, despite having Ollie and Drew - two of the biggest plodders in the centre square chasing the ball. Ollie of course doesn't get to it first, stupidly gives away the free. Then Bergman foolishly handballs instead of taking the tackle and forcing a ball up, Butters the same except he kicked it into space.

4 experienced players making boneheaded decisions when it was truly there to be won is extremely concerning no matter how you want to slice the rest of the game up.

On a positive note, great to see Whitlock, Berry and Moraes key parts of the fourth quarter comeback.

I truly believe this team is better than its record, but when you look at the actions of the vets last night late on, maybe I'm wrong about that.

Carr almost coaching us to a win through method and structure, with a bunch of kids and SANFL standard players is a big tick imo. They're a top 4 fancy, we're a rebuilding bottom 4 team in everyone else's eyes. Frustrating loss, I'm not going to lie it absolutely stings. The way we fought back at the end was impressive, especially seeing it was Whitlock and Berry leading that charge. We're so far off it squad wise though. I've been a pessimist for a long time with this club, but I'm trying to take positives. You can't compare that loss to a Kenny showdown loss, the difference in what Ken was working with, and playing against isn't comparable.

Tough loss but sheesh I’m optimistic about where this team is going. Rolling out the young team we have the last 3 weeks and playing like we have is so overwhelmingly positive I’m heading into nuffy territory.

The added layer which people won’t like to admit is we need to be competitive but have a good pick for Cochrane given the AFL rule changes.

Playing well against premiership contenders but being able to match without crippling ourselves is the ideal outcome.

I doubt we ever get a better chance to beat the crows than what we did tonight for a very long time.

We messed that one up royally with a shocking performance.

It’s okay to admit that a Carr coached side bottled the fck out of a golden opportunity.

It’s happened 4 times already this year.

It won’t mean you like Hinkley.

What a record nicks has over us now. Probably bordering choccos when we had a string of wins over them. We don't look like beating this side for years anyway. Grim.
You are a prize dickhead. Why don’t you go over to the Crom board where you belong.

Butts and Walker missed most the game , did they not? You think we are going to come close to a near full strength Adelaide next time around ? 👍😂

They're not even that good. Their only good midfielder didn't play and they still smashed us. ..

Our list is ****ing dog shit.
What about all of our injuries dimwit. Far more outs for us than them. Jog on loser.

You can make a case that outside of the Roos game (which Carr took responsibility for) we should or could have won every other game this year. Considering the narrative to start the season and even 2-3 weeks ago the signs are incredibly positive.

Crows don't have much talent but what they do seem to get right is being competitive all game and having more composure than us in these games. We are mentally piss weak and have been forever.
Very active on our board when we lose. Crom troll for sure as no true Port supporter would be joyous at a loss. Particularly to you scummy mob by a point.
