Society & Culture Sick Days

I've taken 1 or 2 sick days in 2 years. We can work from home which cancels out the need to take "sickies". I'm working from home on Friday because I'm going out on Thursday.

I have a document to write and will get a lot more done in the quietness of home rather than the open plan office. I'll tackle it hung over in my pjs.

I only take a couple of sick days if I really need to. Personally if I need a day off I'd just apply to take a day without pay knowing that my boss will approve not having to pay another wage for a day.

been taking too many sick days lately......starting to come under a bit of scrutiny. although i have never gone over my 10 days. taking a lot more sickies lately due to being super pissed off with my work.

I have 82 days of sick leave available to me if I need it.

If I am sick and I take a day off - I don't feel guilty. If I need a day off, I take an RDO or a day of annual leave. Simple really.

What jobs do you guys work in where your sick leave accrues? I've only ever seen it in the public service, and where people have been employed under contracts that are like, pre-1990.

I have over 50 days sick leave because I haven't been sick in 5 years.

I never get sick but if I am sick, I won't hesitate to take a day off. If you are sick you are not productive and you infect everyone around you.

You get both ends of it - people who abuse the privelage and the others who never take leave and infect everyone else.

I work in banking and technically sick days don't accrue but in reality they do. I know people who have been here a while have accrued over 120 days. They will never take those days though.

I used to have the mentality that sick days were a right and would use them up in the first few months by getting trashed on the weekend and taking monday off.

I don't get sick so never take sick days.

I think it comes down to the respect level of your work.

I don't have sick days, but mainly because I don't get sick. However, I wouldn't have a random sickie just for the hell of it. In fact, I respect my work enough and they respect me that if I genuinely had a reason to not go to work one day, they'd probably be more than happy for me to have the day off.

Agreed. I have an exceptionally good relationship with my boss to the point that I don't ever lie to her, even if that means telling her something you shouldn't tell your boss.

Half sick today and took the day off, haven't had a day off in ages so I don't feel too bad about it

Lol, teachers shouldn't even be allowed sick days. They get that much time off already and hey, if you're sick you only have to go to school for a few hours then before you know it it's home time :)

Working from home is a farce at my workplace. People working from home are hard to contact, don't have access to all work resources, cannot deal with clients. Our payroll person works from home every Wednesday and it is an absoloute joke. She ends up getting people scanning docs she needs at home wasting everybody elses time and is never available to field calls from the 600 odd employees in this place.

You even say you are working from home because you are going out on Thursday...what a joke! Obviously you aren't planning on working very hard are you?

Yeah, when I hear somebody is working for home I treat it exactly the same as if they were on holidays. No point counting on them to get anything done.

I have never met anyone who works at more than about 50% capacity when they're doing it.

I get to work from home every Monday.

At first I was extremely disciplined and was probably more functional than I would have been if I was in the office.

Lately however my discipline has slipped and have been falling into bad habits. I've spoken to a few others who also work from home on a regular basis and they've all basically had the same thing happen to them.

They will tell you that they get more work done as their are no distractions!

No distractions, like TV, the internet, PS3, Wii, xbox , toasted sangers etc...

It is really unfair and if I was a manger I would laugh in the face of anybody that requested it.

Yeah, because we just leave school at 3pm and forget about the job like everyone else. Because on weekends and holidays we just have a laugh etc.

Just highlighting that it's not like wagging school, working from home is serious business.

People here opt to do that once a week or so because they get more done and cut out the commuting and getting ready for work.

If i don't work then my project fails which means so have i.

Cutting out the commuting isn't helping the business. Commuting and getting to work on time is the employees responsability.

Do you have access to a work phone, are you able to answer a phone ringing at an unattended desk, do you have the access to any hard copy file at your work, do you ever rely on colleagues to relay information you don't have access to?

I disagree that it is serious business. If it was serious business you would be at work doing work.

You even stated that you are going out on Thursday night so you will work from home on the Friday. Is that fair for your colleagues and employer?

I don't think you understand. That 2 hours or so going to and from work can be utilised in a more productive way for both employer and employee. Working from home can achieve that.

I can access my work phone messages and access my work network so no problem with any files.
My job doesn't involve me answering colleagues work phones or passing on messages. If nicky is involved in project type work, then I would guess hers wouldn't either. Don't make the mistake of assuming everyone has the same work responsibilities as you.

That's a matter for the employer - they should be monitoring the cost/benefits of working from home.

Trust me - if it started impacting their bottom line they would soon put a halt to it.
