It seems to me as though fryingpan's work is associated with property management, though I could be wrong.

Either way, even if property managers have stressful jobs, I find it funny that the ignorance about the job from other people in this thread is giving fryingpan a taste of his own exact medicine from earlier on re teachers.

What are you talking about? A few people agree re teachers, even you half agree with me. And I've never said I know everything about teaching, but what I do know is that they get 12 weeks holidays, and to me, regardless of the fact that they spend a lot of that time marking, planning etc (but certainly not the whole 12 weeks) that is absolutely priceless. You only need to look at THRILLHO's post to see the kind of perks they get. He's going to the friggin zoo on Monday for crying out loud.

I've always found it weird when people get angry at others for having what they perceive to be easy jobs compared to their own. As if the fact that your job sucks and you hate it means everyone else should suffer along with you.

Personally, I'm not overly enamoured of my job. Shift work, long days, tight deadlines, lots of unpaid overtime. People that are savvy enough to set themselves up with a solid work/life balance have my utmost respect. Got a mate who's managed to score the opportunity to work from home in a reasonably well-paid job. Seems good at his job so manages to keep well ahead of his deadlines, and can fit a lot more into his life, like study, and midday fishing. Good on him.

Heed the advice, teachers.

You've missed my point.

Some people, not all, but some are being a bit ignorant at least on some facets of the teaching profession. Now, when you raise the issue of property management, you're getting the same (ignorant) criticisms that you yourself are dishing out on teaching. It's amusing from a more neutral perspective (I'm in the middle on the teaching argument and admittedly do not know much about property management so am reserving judgement on that front).

Don't wanna draw away from the epic discussion above, but in response to the OP on the 'Guilty' Aspect;

Three weeks into my new job I got food poisoning...On a Sunday Night. Had to tell my boss Monday Morning that I had been up all night vomiting, and can only imagine what inferences he and the organisation were making. It kinda sucks knowing that your reason is completely legitimate, yet due to the manafactured stereotype (Monday-itis, Vomiting = Big night out on the turps!11!!!), I couldn't help but feel a bit of unjustified guilt.

I can relate to that Pumbi.

Similar thing happened to me this year, just wasnt a new job but right at the end of school holidays. Went over to Perth for 5 days, with the Freo v Geelong game on the Sunday. Was fine, flew back at 8pm, home at 1am, straight to bed, ready to go to work the next day. But was up all freaken night!!!!! Sick as... must have been that chicken "thing" I ate on the plane.

Just ignore fryingpan. He's obviously got a chip on his shoulder regarding teachers. My guess is that one of his teachers told him he would never amount to anything in life and they turned out to be correct.

No chip at all. I'm just sick of their constant complaining when really they've got it pretty good.

I agree that some teachers do love to complain about how hard their job is when there is definitely worse jobs out there.

I personally don't think the conditions are that bad, but its not like its the easiest job in the world either.. you choose to give up a bit of extra pay for a better lifestyle (shorter working day than most and more holidays etc) all in all just an average job and I wouldn't bother with it unless you had a passion for teaching

I've been told from the inside that being a state MP is exactly that (though this was a few years ago by someone that didn't have one of the main portfolios, for what it's worth).
I'd say you're right. The sitting Mayor of Lake Macquarie (not an insignificant sized council) is also a member of parliament in NSW so I can't imagine it involves too much work.

Nose dripping like a tap & I have regular sneezing fits. Still got shit loads done at work tonight. Would love to have been home though.
Rarely take sick days. Only half a dozen people on arvos so I'm unlikely to infect anyone.
2nd day like this though. Gonna look dodgey if I have tomorrow/friday off.

I'm a bit of a trooper re work, will rock up if I'm a little under the weather (no chance to infect others, tho' cos I work arvos/nights).

A few years ago, Freo were playing a finals game and I just had to be there. It was a Friday night final game and seeing as I live in the country, about 1000kms away, it was a few hours drive. So halfway thru the trip, in some small town, I call in sick with some BS story (of course). My colleague pleaded with me, "Just come in for half a shift, we can cover for you after that." I'm 500kms away trying to feign something: "Ummm, nah, I really can't, hey, 'cos my back is killing me...!" We lost the final, but I was there.

remember the old STD beeps you use to get if someone was calling long distance

"beep beep beep.... ah yeah, home as crook as a dog"
"what was those beeps"
"oh... gotta go just about to chuck"

Yeah, when I hear somebody is working for home I treat it exactly the same as if they were on holidays. No point counting on them to get anything done.

I have never met anyone who works at more than about 50% capacity when they're doing it.

It's funny you should say that - the times I have worked from home I have actually been more productive. I am not sure why, but I actually feel more pressure to perform because of the perception I may be bludging at home.

Unfortunately due to some bullshit HR rule I can't do that anymore. Stupid City of Atlanta contracts.
