The fact they dropped him after Rankine got suspended makes his selection last week even dumber.
How many times has been dropped now this year? 4 times? More than any other player (& Smith doesn’t really count as he is a temporary replacement).

Surely, surely Nicks & Co have finally wprked out he is never going to be AFL standard.

Thats what we said the 2nd and 3rd time last year and this year.

I'm not saying he'd be elite. But when the baseline is the contributions of Pedlar/Cook/Murphy/Schoenberg, there is a chance it clicks in the sense that he becomes a far superior contributor. That in of itself is an important contribution.

Even far superior is probably too optimistic. Draper is effectively going to do nothing because that's the way we've built our side.

The at best case with Draper is we get Taylor like performances where it's effectively nothing, but there are one or two moments throughout the game. In the end of the day, Sid is a 1st year player who is built like a 1st year player, and these games are going to be hot.

He's been okay, his speed is undeniable, but his disposal has been poor at times and his decision making has been a bit scratchy as well.
This makes me worried

Finals are gonna be high pressure games, if he’s still in the side he might be one of our weakest links

Not saying he isn’t going to end up a very good player, but is he currently too green?

Nah, I'm not worried. This is an opportunity coming for the lad that 2 weeks ago looked like he was no chance. He's got speed, he's an elite talent - leave him in the forward line to cause a bit of havoc and panic the defenders with his speed.

It's the right move.

Currently below average decision making and disposal is a recipe for disaster, for finals

I’m hopeful - I would’ve put Cheddar in before him, but I get why we’ve made this move - he’s our highest upside guy. Here’s hoping it pays off

I'm hoping Sid can give us a bit extra from stoppage and up forward.

He has been tackling, getting clearance and i50s at SANFL level.

Huge upside, our structure will protect him somewhat.

He can't be the cake, not the cream, but the cherry on top.

It’s likely he would come out for rash or be sub. I’m hoping Dowling cements a spot

I have confidence in his ability to be an offensive player. My concern would be if the opposition can exploit him going the other way and if he has the ability to remain switched on for 120 minutes. That's a big ask for any first year player heading into a finals series where one bad error can cost a season.

Right now there's a spot for the taking if he can stand up. When Max and Rash come back that spot will disappear unless he does something exceptional on Saturday.

What difference does it make when everyone who has played as a 7th forward has been our weakest link?

Assuming we don't do something stupid (i.e. give Sid CBA's) for this finals run.

The issue for Draper is going to be that Pedlar should be available next game with Rachele as a maybe, so it's going to be quite difficult for him to retain his spot up forward. Similar to Dowling though he's got an opportunity, and we certainly aren't going to miss Murphy.

Pedlar has been just as shit as Murphy this year (outside of the West Coast game, but I'm not willing to take anything from that one as it's clear most of our good players didn't give a **** about that game), so no, Sid will be fine. As long as he doesn't have an absolute stinker against North.

That’s the thing. I’d assume Sid will replace Izak’s role, and will get some CBAs

We have barely used Izak as an inside mid since Rachele got injured. Seeing 4 of the last 5 weeks, he's been under 15% CBA. It's not a hard thing to ditch entirely.

With Dowling coming in, I wouldn't be too surprised if those minutes go to Curtin. We've been toying with it a bit in recent weeks. Especially with how reluctant we've been to use Dowling as a forward.

Feel like we have nothing to lose by rolling the dice.

Was reading the article shared here yesterday about Carlton's 95 team when Campo was selected - he was surprised he was picked to play for the "probable" team over the "possibles" in the internal matches, but felt that being around better players would also make him look better and elevate his own game. Who is to say the same couldn't happen with Draper? He's really only had games as a sub, and may excel around AFL level quality players.

Explosive, stoppage gun, also loves tackling...this was the right choice.

Playing predominantly inside 50 might simplify matters with ball in hand.

Only thing I won't be expecting is goal accuracy but if he can even be average in this area, his star may be about to rise over the next month.

Disagree. Both he and Jagga Smith were considered the most ready-made propsects of a stacked draft. Sure, he's had an interrupted preseason, but he added enough speed, spark and chaos when thrown into midfield against the premiers, albeit in a practice match. He does share those qualities with Izak more than anyone else. It's a slim chance of fully clicking, but still a chance, comparative to the outputs of the other options.
