Few reasons

Firstly it’s normal for new draftees to do a % of pre season training , especially pre Xmas . This happens at all clubs

Secondly he’s coming off stress fractures in his shin last season then symptomatic pars defect ( stress fracture in his spine related to growth ) later in season

Thirdly he’s going to be around for 14 years no point blowing him up in the first 6 weeks

Very normal. Often new draftees spend practically their entire first preseason just working on fitness, strength and skills.

Main point is we all would have swapped Kenny for Pav in a heartbeat beat but that’s due to Pavs elite status. Nothing to do with feeling like Kenny was a dud.

Kenny McGregor gets a bum rap from fans. He played well over 100 games for us and was a good, solid player. Jonathon Brown from the Lions rated him as the hardest opponent he ever played on. Sure Pav was a total star of the comp. but hell Kenny was no POS at the same time.

Brown beat him too, rutten not so much. It's funny how players like players they beat judd says shirley was his best tagger but when it came to the crunch judd beat him too. But having said that Kenny was probably our best mark upforward in that period i reckon

Returning SA players should be our bread and butter though.

I think Adelaide is a fantastic place to live, but then I'm not a 20 year old footballer looking to have some fun, or a 30 year old footballer looking to set up opportunities for life after football.

We need to recognise that we are playing with a handicap, and play the game accordingly. And we also need to push our few advantages hard - every good SA-born player in the country should be getting regular contact from us letting them know that we're here and ready to give them a spot.

maybe slightly tongue in cheek, offically it's 60/40 with auskick isn't it? But I've always thought most the latent support in the state is untapped crows supporters, port one of the most subsidised teams in the league.

As you've said in later posts, 85% is a pretty big stretch. But in any event, even a 60/40 split should ensure that we are never wanting for cash, and that has by and large been true. That doesn't necessarily translate to making it easy to bring talent here, though. Once we finally get our new HQ built, that might help matters.

Port have shown they're willing to pay premiums to attract players here. Whether that ultimately proves to be a winning strategy remains to be seen, but they've certainly outperformed us.

I think the key is that we don't always need to draft the best SA players. We just need to get better at bringing them back home. There needs to be almost a culture set up where good players from SA are expected to return home. I want Victorian clubs to get nervous using high draft picks on SA talent, the way that we are when using high draft picks on Victorian talent.

From there, we can focus on selecting the best available, and creating a winning culture that players will want to be a part of.

I can see a time when our squad could be split between here and Melbourne. We have our List Manager and Recruiting Manager based there - why not players. Its a 45 minute flight and a 3 hour window of travel.

Build those 'out of club' extras in the place they can be maximised.

Its going to take some clever management of squads and how it all works - but I think its time now for a clever head or 2 to start coming up with ways to make it work

And to be fair I can see it falling apart as well

Its mostly aimed at those we are trying to recruit here to be able to stay ( mostly) in Melbourne - maintaining relationships , schooling but mostly opportunity to earn coin

Trying to shift - lets say Bont - out of Melbourne might help if he knows his earners are still in place

But this is where it would fall down.

Valid concerns and one where the dynamic shifts when required. Pre-season you are in Adelaide or Melbourne as opportunity demands and you build your learnings that way

Come the season proper you do a Peter Hudson and get choppered in on a Thursday for training and game play OR you are met at a Melbourne training ground by the squad for a weekend game in Melbourne

The big one you point out is team dynamics but thats a teething problem which will shift once players get used to the idea of it

But we are not ready to give them a spot. Always pick the best available.

We seem to be making excuses out of the belief players will leave us. When in fact we have stalled the player walk out and its mostly been attributed to the Trigg years where the club felt corporate.

Also, what fun stuff will players do in victoria they cant do in SA? Cinemas, shopping malls and international travel are a thing in Adelaide too. Pubs exist for letting off steam and have a massive cafe culture for the drafted hipster. There are just as many if not more festivals held here in Adelaide than any other state. So please, there is heaps to do. Where the difference is is the guys who have vic girlfriends who all seem to be chasing instagram and media fame coincidently who complain of a lack of career opportunities. What we dont hear is those who settle in SA really well because they chase normal careers, but they dont make the headlines.

1. No you cant have melbourne rules and screw everyone else. So Curtin is gone on the first plane.

2. The biggest complaint is constant travel and 5-6 day breaks. So what Melbourne players not only have to make the trip to Adelaide every week, they then may have to fly back to Victoria after the game and return Wednesday for a training then a Thursday night game. Oh, but then they can stay, right? but then that defeats the purpose, they are living out of a suitcase and missing the dynamic melbourne lifestyle we want them to have. What about when we fly to Brisbane or Perth, we leave the day before the game. So are Melbourne Players coming to Adelaide for a team training an extra night before, or are moving the entire squad, support staff and equipment to Melbourne for a training, the adelaide players have to spend the extra night in a hotel we have more in logistic costs to work out and then transport the whole team to the game.

3. So we have a VFL team and a Sanfl reserves team I guess. Our Vic reserves side has a player who si smashing it with 35 disposals a game on average the last month but is playing injury ravaged sides while the Sanfl side is getting smashed because most of the team is made up of average div 1 players because most of our recruits are based in Victoria. Because thats the happening place.

Basically this wont work. There is no mechanism this would work unless the league went back in time by 50 years and professionalism is non existent.
