I’m all for Sid to play but what sort of message does it send to Dowling.
We should have been playing him instead of the others we’ve wasted games on, who should have already had a decision made on them.

Could easily fit in both Dowling and Draper by dropping both Jones and Berry

Is Draper going to give you more than Berry ?? I doubt it.
Lets find out

I dont get this type of comment - if you stick by this thinking you would never debut someone

Its more that I think Berry has been pretty good, outside of yesterday of course. He didnt seem quite right.

Id have had Draper in front of Pedlar personally, but Luke may have put that to bed yesterday.

The answer is for us to be playing Draper AND Dowling.

Dowling in for Jones and to the sub role, and Draper in for Peatling if injured, or Pedlar if not. Yes, I know Pedlar just kicked three goals.
Dowling shouldnt be the sub IMO.

Guy has a better tank than most of the squad. Give him the full game, Sid as sub.

The thing is though, you read on here that we shouldnt be playing our high end talent as a small forward. Surely thats even more important for a kid who isnt really a forward at all.

I agree. I'd be giving Sid midfield minutes primarily. Whether that's as sub or for the whole match. He can have patches up forward.

Others shuffle accordingly.

It's not just how he has developed to this point, it's how we expect him to continue developing. And where he was selected us very relevant to that.
His central argument is that players are best developed in the SANFL.

Is it really worth engaging with him like he's a serious person?

He won't give you much less. Though we did see in the Gold Coast game that Sid didn't have the physical strength for the position at the moment. Seeing he got bullied off the ball a lot.

Small forward was the role. Low stakes and Draper is quick enough to be a menace, even without the physical strength.

That said, clear as day the big thing for Sid is an uninterrupted preseason. Well that and us not getting tunnel vision on inside midfield at this point.

Why?

The only thing that's relevant is how he's developed, so that he has the best chance to succeed. Draft pick is just a footnote.

The draft pick is indicative of what an expert group of paid professionals think of his quality as a player. We should trust the people we employ to make those calls - they've already done the research! There is no reason to throw out their work and start again from scratch.

So the draft pick is extremely relevant when we're talking about first and second year players.

Of course it doesn't matter years down the track when AFL form is most important. But when it comes to prioritising who we develop and play, we should listen to our own employees that we pay to watch these kids for years

This board's obsession with Dowling. I don't get it.

He has yet to play a bad game a AFL level (well, arguably one weaker game at GMHBA) and has traits we sorely need, and meanwhile we're carrying proven duds like Jones in our side each week. And he has been carving it up at SANFL level.

Why bother having him on the list at all if we're not going to use him now? 40 touches and 2 goals in the SANFL, while Jones gets two touches at 0% DE in a half a football.

Youve got it in for Berry it seems.

Hasnt really done too much wrong, though yesterday wasnt a great day (for most FWIW). I think Sid needs another summer in the gym to play that role at AFL level.

Developing players is not just chucking them into the AFL or gifting them undeserved games. It's making clear what they have to improve, giving direct feedback and the offering them a platform to do that improvement.

Some players have less of that and can grow within AFL games - like Soligo, Max and Rash. Others have a few fundamental things they're working on (whether physical or skills) and it's better for their longterm careers to work on that in the SANFL, like Worrell and Curtin.

I have no issues with Draper's first year being largely in the lower league, he has incredible potyentiual and a few things to work on. Surely after Worrell and Curtin we'd stop getting so obsessed with the kids getting chucked out there no matter what.
