Was he not coming of a injury or a genetic defect (pars defect) that would recitfy itself over time. Maybe they have given him a taste of AFL, like they did with Curtin, but then allowing his body to mature a little more and build up a bit more of a fitness base. This will allow him to attack next year with more confidence. He has a 12-15 year career in front of him, no need to blow him up in the first year.
I would look at Pat Cummings as an example. Hit the test scene as a 18 year old but had majority back issues. Built his body up over the next 4-5 years and came back into the fold as a 22-23 year old and hasn't missed many games because of injury since.
