Siddle has lost around 12-15 KM/H in the last two or three years. Siddle used to be standard around 140-145km/h and even touched on 150km/h at times. He is now a 129-135km/h bowler and at 29 years old should be at his absolute peak. His speeds have not only declined over the last few years but this series alone where as Harris and Johnson don't seem to be running out of steam.

In comparison, Mitchell Johnson who is three years older is bowling faster than he ever has before and Harris who is 5 years his senior is bowling mid 140's comfortably.

He's still bowling nice areas and taking the odd wicket but isn't the bowler he was and is now only a little above medium pace and is playing second fiddle to Johnson and Harris where as it was only a year or so ago that he was the spear head and a very good one at that.

With Pattinson, Bird, Cummings and Starc all on the comeback I have a feeling that he will be first cab off the rank when one of these bowlers returns to fitness and form.

IMO it's a fine example of the importance of diet for professional athletes. The requirements are so much higher than the regular person or the amateur sports person. I doubt that the amino acid, iron, protein etc requirements of a test cricketer can be maintained properly for optimal performance on his diet.

His diet goes against all sports science and since starting it he has lost excessive amounts of weight and his bowling speed has steadily declined. While some initial weight loss may have been beneficial, it's now catching up on him and threatens to end/shorten what has been an outstanding international career.

With Harris and Johnson going the way they are, if Pattinson returns to his best and bowling 145km/h+ accurate outswingers/seamers, I just don't see him competing with that.

Example, here is Siddle in his prime, not all that long ago, should be in his prime now at just 29 years of age:

If you can't identify that Siddle has dropped pace to maintain accuracy and play a role in our attack, then you probably don't watch much cricket.

He is comfortably ahead of those named.

Siddle is a good bowler, an honest toiler, but he's reasonably vanilla and not particularly threatening.

Bird is the best option not currently in the side, and should be in the side.

Patto/Cummins getting fit will make it even more interesting; if any of those 3 can get up and running, then Siddle will struggle to retain his spot.

He is currently ranked sixth in the world.

There is every chance that Johnson and Harris will both stall before Siddle does. Both are more likely candidates for injury and dips in form.

Wrong. Not sure what cricket you have been watching.

Those guys have been out of the game for ages. I don't even know why Cummins is even talked about. He played one test over two years ago and has hardly played a first class since. The onus is on all of those players to show they are worthy of test selection.

This seems to be little more than idle speculation.

So Siddle was in his prime 5 years ago? But Harris and Johnson who are both older than Siddle are in career best form? Did you also know that Harris debuted as a 31 year old, which is older than Siddle is now? Do you realise that Siddle's stats to this point of the Ashes are better than his stats for that three match series against South Africa? No, you probably didn't.

Peter Siddle is the most versatile bowler in Australia. He can be a workhorse or a strike weapon. Will be in our attack for the next 4-5 years

The thing with Siddle is that he can still bowl at 140 km+
This is part of a deliberate strategy and if required he'd ramp up the speeds.

Look at the series in England (and indeed the first test of 2010/11), in the first test of both of those series we had no Harris or Johnson (or Johnson was bowling pies). Siddle ramped up the pace and took the wickets.
With Harris and Johnson in the team and bowling well he becomes the support act.

Drop him he isn't bowling 140 clicks at the present!

Ridiculous. Bowled beautifully this series so far. Has got some important break throughs when needed.

You could have safely posted this in the 'right arm poo' thread; would have fit in better there.
