Side vs Hawks

I'm worried about Johnson. He probably deserves a game more than a few of the players in that side, but if he does his knee 5 mins into the game we're stuffed. Is he that important that it's worth the risk?

Jack would need to contest overhead and probably kick 5 plus goals to get back in - it sends a statement to him and Dawes .Wholesale changes are not the way to go - we got the ball in fwd 50 a million times -just need to deliver better and convert.Big performance from Medders,Leon and Trav this week - Go Pies!!!

Actually he wasn't sighted in the first half, when the "real game" was on the line.

We got 43 points down, mainly because we were smashed in the middle and off half back, Jack and Dawes were plain ordinary in the first half, no one could argue with that.

Yes they lifted late, but that had to be expected at VFL level, even against a good VFL side.

Many will argue "how are we going to kick goals", well that forward line is missing one player from the Bulldogs game, where we managed plenty of goals, and that one player didn't help out much anyway. (Anthony).

Heath Shaw back is so huuugggeee it isn't funny, I rate him as our second most important player structurally behind Presti, because quite simply we can't replace either.

Heath will get us over the line, and BJ can take Rioli now too.:thumbsu:

If I recall correctly, Jack Anthony at FF takes a quality defender with him and against the Dogs, he did take Lake for large portions of the game running him up the field.

You underestimate the quality of a very good key forward taking a very good defender to quell his influence. All of a sudden, Cloke can be double/triple teammed if he begins to dominate because quite frankly, there isn't anyone other key tall capable of dominating in our forward line. It definitely won't be Leroy, you can mark that down and take it to the bank!

Pretty ordinary selections, IMHO.

Regardless of specific players coming in or out, we don't appear to have picked a forward line to win us a game. It would appear that we're banking on Fraser taking marks inside 50, which wasn't the case last week in the second half. I hope that MacAffer plays forward as named, because he actually has decent hands.

Looking at individuals, on the other hand, O'Bree out may be a watershed moment for our side. Unfortunately Johnson returns. If there's a late change, I'd like to see McCarthy get another game... yes, I know he was poor last week, but young players need continuity and McCarthy has ability, we all know it.

I'm worried too, O'Bree still named as an emergency, says to me that they are giving BJ up until Saturday night to see if he is right to go.

We do need him, he is just about the only real "tagger" we have, and he is vital in a game like this.

Seriously, look at Hawthorn's side, they are missing 6-8 of their best 22, if we can't win this, we aren't a "contender", we are a "pretender".

Hawthorn's injury/suspension list;

Max Bailey (knee) - indefinite
Shaun Burgoyne (hamstring) - test
Lance Franklin (suspension) - 1 week
Josh Gibson (hamstring) - 12 weeks
Rhan Hooper (hamstring) - 2-3 weeks
Jordan Lewis (concussion) - test
Brad Sewell (shoulder) - 1-2 weeks
Liam Shiels (suspension) - 2 weeks
Wayde Skipper (hamstring) - 5 weeks
Simon Taylor (leg) - 13-15 weeks

Someone talking sense for once

We had our best side selected last week... JA was dropped for poor form and is not in my opinion fully fit yet. This week we have added proven players

In a way, I'm glad I can't attend this match. If we lost two weeks in a row due to rampant stupidity at the selection table, I'm not sure I could take it.

Agreed. If we dont win this week we deserve all those pretender comments about us.

Another week with a shit forward line. I won't be at all surprised if we lose to the Hawks. No Dawes again!!!!! I have lost all faith in the selectors. Surely they can at least see what we see happening out on the field. All they do is reward players for mediocrity. And if they are not going to include Dawes in the seniors, why take him off at three quarter time in the VFL? Why not leave him out there to see how many goals he is able to get in a full game! If he kicked a lazy 6 or 7 he would be hard for Malthouse to ignore.

I almost hope we lose in the same fashion as next week.

I'm a bit nervous aboue the game now, after looking at that selection. To not see Anthony or Dawes in really worries me. If we don't win this game, we will get slaughtered by every other club in the AFL, further emphasising our 'pretenders' tag. :(

I'm amazed at Ben coming back in so quickly after a knee dislocation. I was out for months when that happened to me, not counting rehibilition etc. Mine was more serious, of course, but still. Amazing.

Bolded players weren't at the Hawks last year so they mean nothing.

The only real difference is that Franklin, Sewell and Taylor won't be playing.

This:thumbsu: Jack hasn't done anything to warrant being picked.

Which game are you talking about?

Obree has been dropped twice in 4 weeks?

WTF?

Wasn't Rd 2 injury?

In any case, I'm reasonably happy with the team. The dropping of O'Bree will mean a lot more middle time for Pendlebury and Beams, which will immediately improve the side. Heath Shaw is obviously a big in as well.

Hopefully this will put to bed those calls of "O'Bree is the first picked, he's the coach etc..." that comes up any time anyone tries to discuss his future. Whoever is in better form between him and Ball should be in the team, and the other in the VFL. Right now it's Ball.

Reckon Leigh Brown might have a reasonable game at FF too, just quietly.

People calling for Anthony to be included ahead of Dawes have short memories and don't watch the game. If Jack is our best forward, we have no chance of being a top team this year.

So what? Dropping one player out of five doesn't mean he's not playing favorites. Honestly, Brown offers nothing that Anthony doesn't. At least Anthony will make the most of his opportunities in front of goal if he's playing a poor game. Brown can't even kick straight enough to scrape a behind. I'll take one or two guaranteed goals from Anthony when our team only kicks four goals in a match the previous week.

Brown is a totally different player than Anthony. Anthony is a medium sized marking forward who has zero impact on a game other than the two times it is drilled down his throat. Leroy brown has a physical impact on the game, chasing players, bringing the ball to ground. The ability to convert, although important, is useless when you are not getting the ball. Anthony is also too easily beaten mentally. How often do you see him failing to out muscle an opponent rather than leading away from them. Made to look stupid by a decent full back.

JESUS!

There are some of the whingers on this board.

You girls cry about last weeks selections?
We owned St. Kilda most the game, obviously kicking 17 behinds killed us, not the selections.

O'Bree was horrible last week. He deserves his ommission.
Lockyer is lucky imo. He let St. Kilda drag him down back where he is too slow and was a liability, instead of making them accountable.
I believe the coaches are using scare tactics on O'Bree, I reckon he will play and Johnson won't.
It would be amazing if Johnson played and got through the game.

My only concern is Toovey vs Rioli.
Otherwise it's a good side.

Travis should be our FF, he is easily our best mark.
He had a lot more space last week and showed plenty of great signs.
His kicking technique looked a lot more stable, and was unlucky only kicking 1.
More shots on goal = more confidence in his new neat and compact kicking action, thanks to Bucks.

In a nutshell, people on this board are not the coaches, and cry far to much, considering the game hasn't even started.

I don't really know why everyone is losing their shit at the selection table. I really don't think the game is going to be won or lost at the ins and outs. Hawks have had it over us the past couple of years and the players would know that. It's now or never for some of them, and they really have to go in and have a dig with the team that Mick has picked.

We have been given a boost with Buddy being suspended, how about we use that to our advantage? Should be a good match! Go Pies!

Dawes played the whole game...

He played well, but the fact is he's a CHF, not a FF. So having him and Cloke in the same side is problematic.

The other option he has is back-up ruck, where he was very handy last year. So basically, one of Fraser or Cloke needs to be dropped before Dawes can come in.

Do you have the goal scorers from last week?

Pardon the intrusion fellas,

Thought i'd just put things into perspective with your worries about your forward line and seemingly not having the issue addressed this week at the selection table:

Saints have probably the best backline going around and can keep pretty much any team to a low score, and they were able to expose your forward line last week.

The hawks on the otherhand, have an average backline at best, so i would think your forwardline would at least be a step up from last week if for no other reason than they will be under a lot less pressure. Whether that was the reason for the accuracy problem or not i wouldn't know.

Good to see heater in for you blokes, hes a gun.

Can i get an opinion on the decision to keep Fraser in? I was surprised to see him keep his spot, but at the same time can acknowledge the hawks lack of talls and 1 ruckman and hence the decision to exploit both factors perhaps.

(FWIW, not entirely in agreement with my own teams slection committee either, perhaps we can swap for a week next week?)

Cheers guys,
