Find the continued selection of Leigh Brown pretty staggering personally. Last year we had a real opportunity to pump games into our young talls and instead played Leigh Brown. This year we seem to be heading down the same path. Makes no sense to me.

Hawthorn have a major weakness in tall defenders, and yet we take in the midget forward line once again instead of exploiting their weakness.

One good game by L.Brown standards, which is basically break even by other players standards due to the number of stupid mistakes and frees against he gives away in these rare matches, shouldn't grant him immunity from being dropped after playing terribly for a number of weeks.

Anthony, or Dawes are superior in the forward line, and id back in Anthony to do a superior job than L.Brown in defense. L.Brown just had no place in the side.

Hopefully we don't just bomb it in long like we have the past two games and actually spot up our leading forwards, as we have no one to bring the ball down for our small forwards, and relying on Davis to take a mark over 3 defenders ain't going to win many games.

We owned St. Kilda most the game, obviously kicking 17 behinds killed us, not the selections.

O'Bree was horrible last week. He deserves his ommission.
Lockyer is lucky imo. He let St. Kilda drag him down back where he is too slow and was a liability, instead of making them accountable.
I believe the coaches are using scare tactics on O'Bree, I reckon he will play and Johnson won't.
It would be amazing if Johnson played and got through the game.

My only concern is Toovey vs Rioli.
Otherwise it's a good side.

Travis should be our FF, he is easily our best mark.
He had a lot more space last week and showed plenty of great signs.
His kicking technique looked a lot more stable, and was unlucky only kicking 1.
More shots on goal = more confidence in his new neat and compact kicking action, thanks to Bucks.

In a nutshell, people on this board are not the coaches, and cry far to much, considering the game hasn't even started.

Not sure who you are referring to but its definitely not me. Probably only a second instance of me being puzzled by the Malthouse's logic in my time on BigFooty. And you dont have to tell me that he knows better, i am entitled to be bewildered by his selections.

You realise, our inaccuracy was in part due to the fact that we were attempting to move the ball into a near-empty (of Pies players) forwardline, which resulted in us either taking snaps under pressure from the pockets or kicking on the run from 45-55m.

If we had selected a key forward or two, we would have had a forward structure to kick to, and we would have kicked more accurately as a consequence. Relying on Davis to take hangers over three opponents to score your goals is just plain idiocy.

Awesome post. Whilst entertaining to read, hysteria really is a waste of energy.

We play a lot of skilled small/medium forwards. We've got the best collection in the AFL by far. But they are always going to struggle against a balanced defence like St.Kilda's if they do not have a tall forward to contest in the air. Cloke last week did more than his fair share, but he had little support from L. Brown and Fraser. Which meant Davis, Medhurst and others had to fly against Fisher and Gilbert. No chance.

This week is a bit different. The hawks don't have the damaging tall half backs that are strong in the air and great rebound footballers. So I would expect that Thomas, Medhurst and Davis would be much more damaging in the air against their opponents. Which means Cloke's input would be more rewarding when he ventures out of the 50 and pumps the ball back in.

Simply put, and I hope the coaches learn their lesson, we can afford to have a mobile forward line against a defense like the Hawks, but we sure as hell can't have one against a defense like that of the Saints.

Collingwood has welcomed back two Magpies for Saturday night’s clash against Hawthorn with Heath Shaw and Ben Johnson returning to the side.
Both players have fully recovered from their injuries and will line up against a Hawk side which has dropped its last two matches.
John McCarthy and Shane O’Bree have been omitted and are named as emergencies along with Ben Reid.
The return of Johnson will surprise many Magpie supporters after the 29-year-old appeared to have seriously injured his knee in the win over Melbourne in round two. Scans later revealed he had dislocated his kneecap, a good result for the former vice-captain who will line up for his 188th AFL match.

If I were Jack, not only would I be filthy, I'd seriously be reconsidering my future at this football club given the talentless hacks that seem to be in favour instead of him.

Thanks for demonstrating the exact attitude that JA needs to avoid in order to become a decent player.

He's clearly not fit, his efforts in marking contests have been poor, and his chasing efforts have been absolutely pathetic - though I'll concede this is largely due to a lack of fitness.

If JA wants to be the man, he needs to do it more than once or twice a game and not just by kicking the ball through the goals.

I'm glad we wasn't selected. It's much better he pushes through this phase at the start of the year and earns his spot back. Despite his flaws, we need him there.

Overall I'm pretty pleased with the selections. Johnno back in is a huge surprise, he's very fit so he'll be able to run the game out but obviously the knee would be a concern. Is a displaced kneecap likely to get reinjured, or is it more just a loss of strength and mobility?

Shaw back is a huge bonus and good to see O'B dropped, but he'll be back.

Would have liked to have seen Dawes named to stretch their defence, but he'll get his chance very soon if he keeps playing well.

Agree with everything RTS has said above. Most of our scoring opportunities last week were just that opportunistic and less than 50/50 (and that's even considering the freakish goal awareness of some of our fwd's). We need to get structure in our forwardline to improve the quality of our opportunities, which as a result will improve goal kicking accuracy.

I was just having a look at the forecast for the next few days, and maybe this might explain why we have gone with a small forward line.

High winds, warm day leading into a probable "duey" night, at the MCG which acts as a dust bowl and spins the wind around in all directions.

Sunday also has rain predicted, so we could be in for one "wild old Saturday night" at the MCG.

Heath and BJ are effectively our half back line. We missed them last week. It slowed our ball movement.

O'bree will stay in and BJ will not play.

Great to see Mcaffer not dropped. He was one of the most composed last week with his disposal and playing out of position.

Toovey will be given a tagging role hence has to stay in the side for balance.

It is debatable whether Leroy should have been dropped for Dawes. Our side feels a bit Western Bulldogish (fragile) without Brown, regardless of whether he is a star or not.

I think they basically got the side right with a couple of debatable calls that won't make much of a difference.

Surely Johnson won't play? Has he even been training?

I've dislocated my knee cap twice playing sport and both times it took 3 weeks before the swelling even started to subside (still have fluid in my knees to this day due to it) and I could jog in straight lines. Took 6 weeks before I had full mobility back (side to side movement without pain).

Anyhow back to the game. MM is obviously going to do the same as last week. Try and strangle Hawthorns ball movement with close up pressure, hoping they only kick 10 goals and we kick 11.
