I honestly don't think that we'll see that for a while.
I think he'll play through the pre-season and be in the side from round 1.

I think he could be a possible tagger this year, it would teach him a lot about how some of the leagues best onballers move and gather the ball.

Bryce Gibbs and even Deledio at Richmond have had similar roles in their first seasons, and they seem to have developed well.

In particular games where we dont need him as a tagger, he could play as a pure attacking onballer, so he could learn a little from a few different aspects.

Either way I expect him to play 7-12 games this year, as MM doesnt shy away from playing young players if they are good enough.

I think Steele could play a tagging role in his first year to become used to the pace at AFL level. We lack a quality tagger so he could play this role for a year to learn by playing on the best, though to expect him to be an overly effective tagger could be asking a little much.

Otherwise a half back or half forward role could be suitable for his first year in the big league.

Most Likely it is to early to try it with steele in the AFL, but It would be intresting if they try it in the VFL because we do need a Tagger who can stop the opposition Mids[/qute]
I would much prefer they continue to use Toovey and Cook more so toovey as he seems more suited to it and harder then cook.

Then try and turn a number 11 draft pick with good skills into a hard nosed tagger, he could do somewhat of a run with role maybe but i see that as a waste of skills

Exactly opti - why draft a player who potentially could be our most skillfull player who can create the play and then make him chase someones a*rse all day!

Leave that for job for Toovey and Cook.

Is someone can kick 10 goals in a grand final and gather possessions at will, I don't think he is going to have any major dramas in finding the footy!

I honestly think that Wellingham should continue to do some tagging jobs. He did really well on Gary Ablett last year.

He also has a couple of key qualities that neither Cook nor Toovey have;
a) he is amongst the best tacklers in our side
b) he can hurt the opposition going the other way. Opponents will at least have to keep an eye on where Sharrod is.

Yep i've thought that for awhile and totally agree. Would help him break into the team and teach him how to be a better midfielder as well. He is also one of the few players that we have that has the speed and mobility to stay with midfielders like Ablett, Burgoyne, Kerr and Power. The fact he can be used as an offensive weapon as well as a shut down tagger should put him in front of some of the other tagging options in our team.

I think Steele is too slow for a "constant tagger" role. He may get defensive run with roles, but only situational.

I also he think he is too slow for a backline role. As has been mentioned (and i have been saying) I think he will end up playing mid and half forward.

Scotland is soft, and unaccountable.

He would be competing with heath shaw, marty clarke across HB and pendlebury, thomas, wellingham, etc in the middle. I dont really think he is best 22 for us

To a degree I agree. But you wouldn't put him on the likes of Judd, Ablett, Cooney, B Harvey, etc.

To a degree, yes.

However in a time with such enormous numbers of rotations, the 'fast but relatively poor stamina' guys can have a big impact coming off the bench. You'll see someone like Alwyn Davey tear a game open in 5 minutes of brilliance with his pace, then he goes to the bench and comes back 5 minutes later.

But as a general rule, I do agree.

Agree.
Wellingham is the most likely to become an 'elite" tagger of all our players, only if he is given the opportunity.

Also, if anyone watched Ziebell star against Carlton, he clocked about 0.08s faster than Rusty over 20m. It's not a big deal. Pace off the mark is great if you have it, and a concern if you're a key back and you don't have it, but otherwise there are a great many other factors that are more important.

Thank you! I can't remember who I was arguing with earlier in the pre-season regarding Sidebottom's speed, but you just pointed out a very clear fact that it really is close to irrelevent.

Regarding him being a tagger, it really is a pointless move. He has the smarts and skills to find the footy himself in the midfield. He isn't a HF or HB that needs to learn from opponents how to find the footy in the midfield, so it'd be a waste to use him as a tagger.

I agree that Wellingham should be given the tagging role, along with Marty Clarke, who is into his 3rd AFL season and should be given his opportunity in the midfield and tagging on a more consistent basis so he learns where to go.

No to Sidebottom as a tagger. As others have mentioned he knows how to find the ball and how to use it (well at least in junior days) - we need to use him as an attacking weapon first and foremost when he breaks into the team.

Never really thought too much about Wellingham as a permanent tagger but it does have its merits. It should teach him to stay in the game for longer too. I'm a big fan of Wellingham but I do find it tends to drift out of games at times.
