We have more than our fair share of players who can't hit a leading target. Percentage wise I don't think Sidey is worse, in fact I think he is an above average kick. He is more noticeable because he gets the ball more often than others.

Still would have someone like him who connects 10 out of 15 times than someone who hits 2 out of their 3.

10/15 = 2/3

I agree with a lot being said here. I guess for me, the issue is he isn't the quickest, he makes up for this with footy smarts. To effectively use his footy smarts he needs to be disposing effectively.

He is hardly a bad user of the ball but with us all keen for him to take the next step ala beams, can he do this if he keeps landing balls on toes? He is dual sided which is great and I have clear memories of his performance in both matches in 2010. That's the Steele I want to see consistently.

I'm getting worried that more and more we are starting to see another player who can accumulate possession with ease but fail to really damage due to foot skills. I don't think he will ever have any great depth on his kicking, which is fine. He needs to be hitting targets consistently though. I feel it's one area in his game where he has gone backwards. Maybe I'm just being more critical of him compared to 2010??? I really expect to see something from steele in 2013 though.

I think that's the point. He's saying someone with the same efficiency but a lower possession count flies under the radar but Rusty gets highlighted.

Yeah. I re-read it and thought the same. I'd rather him get the pill 15 times and hit 10 targets than only getting it 3 times and hitting 2

He has a major flaw in his kicking action, he tends to force the ball onto the boot to hard instead of placing it, at times his kicking can be quite good but when it's off it's way off, i started a thread about his kicking last year when he went around 4 weeks without hitting a target, he needs to get rid of that ridiculous ball drop IMO.

I think the flaw is in his right (natural) foot action. He turns the front part of the ball too far up in his wind up, and then has to therefore correct its position each time when he is kicking, creating more movement than everyone else. Also, he drops the ball high, which means that most of this movement happens through the air, rather than being guided. His left footed action is far neater.

This is my perception, anyway. I am no biomechanist (although I have studied it), but this is what I see. Others may disagree.

Yep, got it in one.

He kicks fine, just had a shocker in the NAB game against Brisbane. Happens to the best to them, although I always felt he was better at kicking for goal than to a moving target.
Anyway he'll Chaz up in 2013. Feel the Steele!

In all my time watching footy, I've never seen a player kick so many underweighted passes. Although he is capable of a clever finish and generally shows pretty good vision, his actual kicking is ******* sloppy. It's always been an overrated part of his game.

Have you ever watched Jaryd Blair kick? 95% of his passes drop short without fail

I think he knows his kicking has been letting him down but now it looks like he is trying to be too careful when he kicks, back your skills sidey, start to drill a few passes instead of hoping it gets there.

I think his kicking was poor towards the end of last year, and seems to go downhill when he gets a bit tired.

I still think he has a fair way to go to make it to the games top echelon. But at worst he is still a very handy player.

His kicking was poor towards the end of last year. His kicking has been only slightly above average for his entire career.

And I think at BEST he is a very handy player (apart from a couple of excellent games) and at worst, he is just an average to slightly below average contributor.

Also, I'd imagine that in most cases it's better for the ball to fall short than to go long.

If a player is unsure of their kick then they'd probably be inclined to pull it a little.

Then he needs to work on his Fitness

I think u underestimate his workrate, the amount of times i have seen him get back to the last line of defence and get a hand in, tackle or gather a loose ball is impressive.
I just want him to hit the scoreboard more like in his early years. Maybe being the more defensive of the midfielders he doesnt get that opportunity as much. He was great at reading the ball off the hands and nailing a timely goal.
He is still only 23 so still improvement to come.
