Analysis Sidebottom (with fan poll)

Your thoughts on Sidey?

  • Top 1-3 at our club, and Elite in AFL

  • Top 10 at our club, above average in AFL

  • Top 11-18 at our club, only average in AFL

  • Below Average player overall

  • Not sure how I feel about him

  • This poll is too confusing. I'd rather a "yes" or "no" question.

  • Top 1-3 at our club, but NOT Elite in the AFL

If Collingwood dropped Sidebottom for his clanger/turnover rate then they'd also have to drop Grundy, Treloar, Adams, and Greenwood for their even higher rate of clangers/turnovers. Forget about the 26 tackles per game that these 5 average or the 120 disposals and over 3-4 goals among all the other contributions. It's all about the negatives people.

Sidebottom even in his early years was an average home and away footballer and a bloody champion come finals.

The problem is we don't play finals anymore.:drunk:

26 disposals, almost a goal a game, 4.4 tackles a game. disposal eff of over 75%(but he is a crap user according to some) and someone who works harder and covers more ground than just about any other player we have. This is not a crap home and away footballer. These are stats of a genuine gun.

But some will still argue he is a liability.

People will believe what they want to believe but these stats don't lie.

Steele is a gun and a great collingwood man he was my pick for the Norm Smith in the 2010 gf replay, runs all day both ways and is very durable, highly rated by his team mates and fans alike, potentially a 300 gamer as i said gun.

I was just reviewing the Didaka Award thread and noticed Steele is voted as being the 6th best player in the 13th best team.....interesting.

When we consider many players below him missed large chunks of the year (Elliot, Reid, Wells, DeGoey) he could actually, after an adjustment for the amount of games played, be the 10th best player in the 13th best team.

All this talk of how Elite he is really makes me laugh.

I think he should be traded whilst he has currency as he should be in the prime of his career but is lagging badly.

I wouldn't be using a BF award to base your assessment on.

He is probably to even in his play,. Played forward more with more goals to his name, then his votes would have a lot more.

I've never understood the criticism of Sidebottom. He makes a few mistakes, but every player does. Nobody kicks with 100% efficiency. His record says he is a top player. He never shirks, is our best runner and kicks both sides. He is a good mark and gets the ball a lot. It is interesting that Phillips, who shares many of these characteristics, is also heavily criticised. What are the critics actually expecting of players?

Not exclusively, but I wouldn't think many media awards or even our B&F would differentiate much?

Given so many BF posters rate him so highly, maybe he is overrated in the Didaka Award count?

Anyway, food for thought. I just don't rate him very highly and other respectfully disagree which is ok.

Don't care about his tank or running ability.
Should not be allowed to leave the forward 50.
Rather he kicks goals then get 30 disposals around the ground.

I'm coaching Barcelona , I might play Lionel Messi at left back. Makes sense.

Most media awards favour mids (Brownlow?), so not sure that they are relevant either.
Anyway, you are entitled to your opinion but wouldn't bring in other awards as benchmarks.

It’s still early but I think he should have been the midfielder we ditched.

It would have been less likely we’d have to pay some of his salary and more likely to reach fair value for him and it would have been an easier sell to the fan base given his age and would have fit perfectly within the theme of reloading.

His elite traits (dual sidedness, aerobic capacity, core strength) are unlikely to diminish quickly. I’m comfortable keeping him.

None of this would even be a question if we hadn’t given up the Earth for Beams.

Play him at half forward I reckon.

Would kick 1.5 a game, goal assists, he’d lay 3-4 tackles up there because he has the endurance for repeated efforts... would do much more than Thomas and WHE do there

Sidebottom would have a longer career if we transition him forward. And it allows us to play someone like a Macrae in the middle

Sidebottom played half forward against Brisbane and had his worst game in years. I like him rotating wing and on-ball.

Sidebottom has always signed on for unders. I think he's incredibly important for the side and offers great value on his contract.

Sidebottoms gonna be that old vet keeping it together and showing the next generation how it's done while we develop.

Hasn't his default position been high half forward with the odd stint on ball for the last 2 years.

Yes but played half-back against Richmond in the 2018 Prelim and will probably be half-back/mid next week if De Boer misses.

Probably needs more than one week at it before a final judgement on it

With kids like Macrae, McInness, N Daicos coming through... Sidebottom will be pushed out of the midfield in the next 18 months I reckon... before Pendlebury is.

Anyhow, I think his longer term future lies at half forward.

Should have been traded 3 years ago when he had currency. can do some sublime things, and the next minute has a brainfart, for a bloke who can kick a footy through the rear window of a moving car , under no pressure, he sure misses a lot of targets with his cute dinky kicks under the heat of match day pressure, too late to trade now.
