Sides that constantly throw the ball

A honest opinion here but I really believe there are 2 sides out there who literally throw the ball more then they handball. Its at the level where if a umpire pulled them up on this anomaly we would be looking at 40+ free kicks in a given contest. The two teams are

Richmond - Worst of the lot for sure. I dont think Kamdyn McIntosh has ever handballed the ball in his entire career. Every single one is a clear and obvious throw. His handballing technique is extremely similar to Valentime Homes passing technique I find. He puts his fist near the ball and then unleashes a NRL level spiralling bullet pass. I actually think it was a less of a issue last night than normal and they did alot more tap ons and clearer handballs due to the defensive pressure but in general they for the 120 handballs last night 20 were clear throws

Sydney - Second worst for sure. Callum Mills a expert in it from there side. Josh Kennedy been the birth of it overall though. He would be the worst in the AFL with that throw where he gets his hands above the contest and throws the ball down and over the contest. Its been 10+ years for them. Developed by Paul Roos and continued by Longmire

A small honorable mention to Geelong but im being harsh there. I tend to feel like they were the team who got pinged for it and have had to cut it out over the years so kudos on them for removing it from there game

Robbie Gray gets pinned for throws every time he legitimately handballs it but he’s just too quick for the umps to notice. So Port certainly aren’t on this list as we seem to get pinned for anything remotely close too a throw

It's become semi-acceptable in the game, in the same way that chucking became acceptable in cricket for a few years. Thankfully the cricket authorities did a 180 and stamped it out again. Same needs to happen here. If the ICC can show some competence and course-correct, surely the AFL can.

Libba and his “quick hands”. I don’t think I’ve seen a disposal of his that wasn’t a shovel with his fist close to the ball or a flick over his head.

The overhead stuff irks me the most. It opens up the game so much because no one is expecting to have to cover for it.. but it’s not a legitimate disposal if you’re propelling both your arms in a swinging motion over your head. If you punch it from above your head I think that’s fair enough (and also extremely obvious to pick up) anything else should be deemed a throw.

I often get annoyed by the swans midfielders unwillingness to throw the ball at times. Everybody's doing it.

Top 3 I would say are Selwood, Libba and Cotchin. They'll dive for the ball, collect it with two hands and then scoop it out to a team mate while closing one fist but not actually ever hitting the ball.

The Dogs are the new champs.

The Swans remain the old champs and kings of the deliberate midfield drop/throw. Kennedy was the best and Mills is learning from him, but if you watch very closely they'll pick it up in a pack, draw a tackle and drop it as soon as contact comes only for a team mate to then pounce on the loose ball. Very clever stuff.

Every good inside midfielder in the comp knows the boundary side quick shovel never gets seen by the umps.

The Tigers have a few specialists at the over the head 'handball' that really isn't a handball. Or wasn't for a 100 years anyway. Edwards is the best at it. The umps never call it so you can't blame him.

That is the current rule, it's just not enforced.

I think the wording was "hand holding the ball mustn't move in relation to the body" but I'd have to look it up to be sure

Yeah I had them as team 3 initially but removed it out of the equation but fair comment. Bontempelli is really bad

I think this constant throwing is a core reason for the lower scoring myself as it allows this overpossession

Coached into the game. They know the umpires won't ping everything and the odd ones they do ping are far outweighed by the ones they let go. The AFL want the game to "flow" so why not exploit it. It's a tough comp, so any edge you find, you take it.

Supposed to be propelled with a clenched fist. Not using different forms of momentum and having the fist there as a token effort.

If they aren’t going to pay them we’d be better off doing away with the confusion and just legalising scoops and throws, which I’m sure 95% of supporters would be against. So start paying them, even if that means a few 40+ free kick games early on (that’s the price we have to pay for letting it slip this far).. the players will learn and adapt fairly quickly and realise they can no longer get away with it.
