Genuinely funny and touching movie if you haven't seen it.

A little surprised that Paul Giamatti was snubbed by the Academy - he's absolutely brilliant.

Coming hot on the heels of 'American Splendor,' the man is on fire. Probably the most unlikely leading man ever.

I adored it. Beautifully paced, extremely well written and with 4 of the most terrific performances you could ask for.

Beware the TV ads that are trying to sell this film as a sort of "Road Trip" / "Old School" romp. It could not be any further from those films.

It is criminal that Giamatti was overlooked by the Academy, yes he is brilliant. As Magpiespower says, it is genuinely moving without having to manipulate the emotions by piling on the sentimentality. It presents such rich and nuanced characters that you really care for them. And yes, it is often very funny.

A gem of a film.

Fantastic. I doubt there will be a better movie than it this year. Some really heart wrenching scenes, all wrapped up with some of the best comic writing and acting I've seen in a long while. I can't understand how Giamatti didn't get a nomination.

I just came back from seeing it and I absolutely loved it. The story was nothing like it has been made out to be on the ads, it was a real thinking person's comedic drama.. if that makes sense. Brilliant performances, beautifully shot, extremely touching and just damn funny.

To repeat what others have said previously, Paul Giamatti was completely robbed by the Academy. This brilliant man has become one of my favourite actors.

I couldn't recommend it hightly enough. Go and see it. NOW.

Just had to bump this thread 5 years on, hasn't had the kudos it's deserved in that time. Saw it again over the hols, brilliant movie, probably in my top 10 from last decade. If you haven't seen it, whack it on your watch list.

Interestingly, following the release of the movie there was a significant increase in the sales of Pinot Noir and a decrease in Merlot. A clear case of life imitating art.

"Jack: If they want to drink Merlot, we're drinking Merlot.
Miles Raymond: No, if anyone orders Merlot, I'm leaving. I am NOT drinking any f---ing Merlot!"

:)

Read an article after its release which said waiters the world over were jack of diners using that "Merlot" line.

Apparently it quickly became as annoying as the "Taxi!" call whenever somebody spills a drink.

Of course - in both cases - whoever says the line thinks they're the funniest person in the world...

If they use that line, they have to live that role by going home alone, buying schoolgirl pr0n and breaking into a room of hillbillies ****ing to steal a wallet back.

I think i'll use that line tonight then!

I will be howled down no doubt, but I hated Sideways. I love Paul Giamatti as an actor and thought American Splendor was amazing, but Sideways left me cold.
I did not feel for any of the characters at all. I wonder if I should go and get it out on DVD to revisit it.

"And I'll take a copy of "Barely Legal". No not that one, the latest edition"

:)

I can honestly say you're the first person I've come across who didn't like it. That's cool though, as there are many movies that most people loved which I thought were horse shit. District 9 and Slumdog Millionaire are a couple that come to mind. Just didn't get what all the fuss was about.

And yes Giamatti is awesome. I've been a fan since his role as Rudy in The Negotiator. These days he's ripping it up as the lead actor in the HBO series John Adams.

Do that. I enjoyed it the first time I watched it with others but enjoyed it more the second time when I watched it alone.

No howling from me, I felt exactly the same way.

Wasnt a particularly good film, very unlikeable characters. Pretty shit to be honest.

ROFLMAO!

Bloke at work is a pr0n addict.

Disturbs him knowing I find it boring as bat$#!t.

So he burned me a DVD from his collection.

Barely Legal #46.

Obviously a popular series...

Watched it when it first came out, didnt make it to the ending i disliked so much but just watched it again and have changed my mind. I must have matured a bit in last 5 years. ;)

Its a good movie. Real funny.

I agree that the two guys arent very likeable characters....but I still felt empathy towards them, paticularly Miles. Probably goes a touch too long, but theres plenty of humurous moments.

Just a ****ing good movie on all levels. The writing, the chemistry between the actors, the first rate acting. Haden Church and in particular Giamatti were brilliant. Yeah the main characters had their flaws but they really weren't that horrible. Flaws make them seem more real.

Very funny without the laugh out loud belly laughs.

I taped it when it was on the other night and watched it again last night. Hated it as much as I did the first time. Totally unlikeable people. I was unable to empathise with them at all. (Despite many people finding me unlikeable).

I'm always bemused when people say "I didn't like the characters" or "I couldn't relate to the characters/story". It's an entirely foreign notion to me.

You're not scouting future friendships, you're simply watching a story.

I understand that, but most people like to empathise with a character within literature or movies.

If you can be totally detatched while watching films or reading books, I am not sure that you can enjoy it as much. Likewise, in this case, It meant my enjoyment was less but I can handle that.
