Toast Simon Dalrymple

One thing I haven't seen noted about our recruiting is our heavy emphasis on Victorian players. 37 of our current list of 44 is from Victoria. I think this has been a key factor for both Dalrymple and McCartney in recent years and isn't just a coincidence.

I believe that firstly it's too avoid the go home factor and secondly to concentrate our limited recruiting resources (compared to other clubs) on the largest and most productive nursery which is also on our doorstep. Many of Dalrymple's early failures involved players from outside Victoria (Howard, Tutt, Thorne, Schofield, Skinner) who were either not good enough and/or returned home and I think this has influenced him.

Johannisen from WA has been his only non-Vic success though he did draft Hamilton and Daniel last year and Fuller the year before all from SA.

Don't think you can judge dalrymple for a few years when we are playing finals , see who he can recruit then , so far his best draft years have been with top ten picks
Good list are built on top end talent, ask Melbourne how much high picks are worth if you don't get them right.

They picked the right players they just haven't came on how they were expected

These days, there is more than just a "head recruiter", though. I don't know the exact number, but I think most clubs are made up of anywhere between 5-10 recruiters, depending on funding. So while it's fine to give kudos to Dalrymple, I also think it's fair to give praise to the entire recruiting team.

Anyway, expanding on Grey_Wind's post at 15:02 hours, I thought I would rank our picks since the "Dalrymple era". I won't include the most recent draft.

The good thing with Dalrymple is even if you disagree with
his picks, you understand why he took them. Deserves
massive credit for Stringer and Bontempelli as were not
rated as high as the picks used through injury and late
development.

Everyone has a Fuller/Howard in the closet or a potential
Toumpas such is the nature of young players and a lack
of exposed form.

Here's all the drafts that Dalrymple has been involved in;

Good write up, only one I disagree with is the Campbell one. Maybe I rate him more than others, but a young developing ruck who even when he gets a run in the 1's has had to play mostly at FF due to Minson #1 ruck, is developing very well in my opinion. Could have won the VFL medal last year as a 22 year old ruckman if he didn't get called up to the 1's. Can't expect too much more from him really, so many other young rucks are still just ok at VFL level while he is dominant, and if it wasn't for Will, would likely have played 50 games already.

I think he is going to be a very good number 1 ruckman for us, with Roughy giving good support if we can lure over Carlisle.

IMO Talia is going to be a blue.. He doesnt panic, has good vision and can handle pressure.. Another Glen Jackovich type CHB
The only problem I have with Talia is that he isn't damaging with his disposal, but I suppose if he can lock down key forwards every week like he did to Walker then that makes him a blue chip player. I can definitely see him getting there though.

Really needs to work on his fitness to be able to run out a game at AFL level but all the building blocks are there to suggest he can become a good ruckman. Don't think he will ever be in that elite category though.

With Ollie wines, we needed outside silky players, hence McRae. Don't think with libba, Wallis and clay Smith that wines was really going to happen. I'm more than happy with mcrae and and stringer

Still think his picks after roubd 3 are pretty poor but he is definately improving but again he started pretty badly

I don't really care how many picks after round 3 he's missed. So long as he isn't missing on blokes in rounds 1 and 2. The chances of anyone becoming a good AFL player after round 3 are incredibly low and the ones that do aren't the norm.

Not to mention he's already found blokes in the rookie draft.

Then pretty much every club has been poor after round 3 if that's the case. We have as good a record as anyone lately. It's late in the draft, there isn't a lot available, when you look at who went after our picks, we didn't miss much.

Haha no worries. With the dramatic improvement Jong has made, I hadn't seen a lot of you around :(. Boys did well on the weekend.

To be fair to MD, he has been around a fair bit. And every time he pops up he gets accused of derailing threads and being a pr!ck. And if he didn't do that he would be accused of running away. He's damned if he does, damned if he doesn't until he agrees with the rest of us about Jong. I wish people would stop poking at him.

Nah, mate, I enjoy the banter with Mattdougie. He knows that. I wasn't having a go at him in the slightest, I just haven't noticed him around, which is a shame. I want him to enjoy the good moments too, not just be derided during the negative times on the board.

Great result mate so rapt with the way we playing and have said so many times but that seems to be drowned in the flood of cr@p I cop coz I don't think Jong is the next Ablett.

Not sure how long the kids can keep up the manic way we are playing but enjoy watching every second of it win or lose.

Although at the sake of more abuse I can't see is making finals but we don't need to in the section of build we are in.

Imagine if he kept it. Jack Darling went one pick after that priority. My gosh 2010 could have been an epic haul.

Dal has been brilliant, we could probably pencil in Webb at the very least a potential b grade player (if not higher) due to what he has shown already. 16 disposals at 94% and don't even get me started about his ball use.
True - but Darling did come with avoid stickers all over him thanks to his off-field behaviour

Also if we drafted a little better in 09 / 10 etc, we may have won a few more games in 2013 and missed out on drafting Bont to Collingwood. Food for thought ;)
