Caroline Wilson on The Agenda Setters has just said that Simon Garlick is “the strong favourite” to become the AFL Chief Operating Officer.

Thoughts?

I was randomly thinking about him taking this position today ( I know, I need a life), and I concluded he would have to take the position if offered. The money would be very good but mainly it would open all sorts of doors in the future including AFL ceo. They appoint from within .
What ever we might lose in the short term we would hopefully gain in having a “friend “ in the AFL executive who actually understands the issues facing WA clubs.

I don’t really know what the chief operating officer does but it can only be a good thing having someone from a WA club in the position. They would have a far better understanding of the WA clubs needs and environment.

He'd be a silly boy to take it on IMO - for reasons I've already posted. It just seems a poisoned chalice of a position.

I won't be overly fussed if he goes though, he's talked a big game and delivered a not very big game. He's probably competent enough, but a mastermind he ain't.

The plus side is, he is not irreplaceable. Infact it shows a Freo\based CEO is no impediment to career advancement.

Unlike the past where alot of highly credentialed candidates knocked us back purely coz its Perth, might give us a go in future of landing a genuinely highly credentialled candidate.

I can see it would it would be very attractive role for Garlick and it could lead to take over from Andrew Dillon in time.

Sucks for Freo because he's been a good CEO.

There was a bit of an off hand remark about Fremantle and Garlick last night on Footy Furnace where Morris reckoned that he(SG) has given an indication that he wasn't looking for the AFL job.

Could be based on an interview Garlick did with SEN on Saturday.

2nd Half of interview is where it's relevant to the discussion.

He is at the moment only representing a WA club. He is not a West Aussie'.
We have had "WA people " represented on the VFL/AFL before and got SFA.
