On ya Hogan! It was great to see him come back after the problems of last year, and to finish in style today. I always thought he had huge potential to be an AFL player. Good luck to him in the future, I hope he does stick around with the club.

I'll always have this;

He is involved with the mental health organisation headspace off the field. ''I'm in a great place now and probably the last three to four months have probably been the best place I've been for quite a while, that's probably on the back of knowing what direction I'm heading in,'' Hogan said after yesterday's win.

''I've really enjoyed my time at Geelong and I will always be involved in the club, but for now, I just want to finish off some study and do a few other things, some travel and go a bit of my own way.

I reckon when you measure your favourite Geelong players, you need to do it in relation to the amount of love the player gets from other Geelong supporters. In that respect, Jimmy Bartel isn't one of my favourites (who doesn't love him?); Simon Hogan is. It's funny to think back to three years ago, how Hogan and Gillies were easily the most promising players in the next wave, the guys you would have banked on to establish themselves in the seniors in 2010 and go on to long careers in the AFL for Geelong.
But all that is irrelevant, in the grand scheme of things. What is important, is the quote above. Hogan is to be applauded for the courage he displayed to come out publicly to speak about his illness, while he was still an AFL player. It was an incredible achievement for him to come back from that and play senior footy (and he wasn't gifted the game last year). I couldn't be happier to read that he is excited about the future and that he intends to stay involved with the footy club. He may have bigger fish to fry for the next few years, but I think the club could gain a lot from his experience in the AFL, in some sort of welfare role.

I'm sorry to see him leave, but I wish him all the very best. He deserves it. It was a great way to go out, too, with yesterday's premiership. A brave and classy bloke.

I'd like to show my respect for Hogan too. No doubt always put in 100% and so what if he didn't have the talent to make it as an AFL player. There are more important things in life. Showed great courage to go public with his struggles and hopefully that will hep others.
Also wanted to give respect for Nathan Djerrkura who has recently given the game away to work back in his home community. Also gave 100% and sees the importance of giving back to his community.

Big thumbs up to both the boys.

Great way for him to finish.
In the end, I think depression, and AFL career and studying medicine was too much to have on one plate.
I am going to miss doing my Colonel Klink impersonation whenever he kicked a goal (or stuffed something up for that matter ;))

You can always hope we get a mini draft pick

I wont say he was my favourite player , it would be hypocritical. What I will say is I admire any of these guys who choose to live their dream. The guy has got the brains for a medical degree yet put that off to have a ping at footy.

To some degree , i see his last game as metaphor for his recent struggles. To get the chance to kick that goal early in the game was like a gift , a chance , what a way to start the GF. Then it was stuffed up. Who could not appreciate what he would have been thinking , who hasn't played sport and have little man start to talk in your ear about your error ; you idiot , its going to cost the game , what will people think.... But the game went on and SH thru some sort of inner strength put that inner dialogue to the side and pushed on. And in doing that he contributed much more than he would have if he just let something beat him.

Thanks for your efforts Simon , 2 VFL flags is a legacy you should be proud of.

Appreciate what you are trying to say, but he did have the talent to be an AFL player, he clocked up an even dozen AFL games (which is 12 more than me!) and that makes him an AFL player in my book. I like that he gave it a shot, and now will finish his degree and move onto his next worthwhile career (which is more than most retired AFL players).

Re Nathan Djerrkura, good on him too. (best game I saw him play was in his last game against us at KP!)

^ Thanks for that - I was misinformed. It also means he's played 22 more AFL games than me! And actually it reinforces my point about him being an AFL player.

Glad to see Hogan has moved on with his life and is using his well documented problems as his passion to help others who suffer mental health problems. Also glad to hear he's back playing footy and good to see he's found a way to combine the two with the Thick and Thin socks round in the VAFA to raise awareness.

I wish him all the best as mental health problems are nothing to be ashamed of and I'm happy he's found peace in his life

Thanks for the bump of this thread and sharing that article! It's definitely great to see Simon, who seemed like such a quality individual, doing so well post football. I wish him every success with all of his endeavours.
