Training - 28 February 2011

Still a fair bit of tape on his knee but doing some run-throughs with decent runners and guys who have been playing, hopefully he's not far away.

Another one with a build up decidedly lacking in hype. Certainly looks to have killed some time in the gym. One would think he has to have equal claims to Laidler and Duigan in defense.

My man Whitey has been named for his first hit out of the year on friday against the crowbots.

Whitey has had some injury problems over the pre season but looks to have bulked up.

Will be very interested where the MC play him on friday.

Re: 43. Simon White (Rookie)

Played decently last year. Anyone heard anything? Has he played at all in the NAB?

Played his first game of the preseason last Friday against Adelaide. Should play vs Geelong on Saturday.

With Jamison out, he's a real chance of playing senior footy in round 1.

Re: 43. Simon White (Rookie)

Great to hear ... I thought the 6 games he played midseason 2010 were very solid.

Well done to my man Simon White on selection for rd1 and Pauly B and Jamo both out he will most likely get the big job on Jack Reiwoldt.

I expect a fit and firing White along with the rest of the backline to hold Reiwoldt to 2-3 goals max especially with the rain forecast. My main concern for Whitey is overcommiting himself in one on one contests as you would think the umpires will be red hot on any holding or chopping of arms this early in the season.

My tip - Blues by 37 points and White to play 4 solid quarters of football and maybe sneak forward for a goal. :thumbsu:

Thursday night was not the best of nights for my 2011 buddy Simon White.

It was a big ask by Ratts to give a White the role on reinging coleman medalist Jack Reiwoldt in what was only his 7th AFL game while also giving up height, weight and skill to jumpin Jack.

Whitey had 8 disposals for the match, 6 kicks, 2 HB's, 3 marks and 1 tackle whilst Riewoldt kicked 6 goals (not all on White).

On what was a wet and windy night White seemed to be undecided whether to attack the ball or stick with Riewoldt and on a few occasions was caught in no mans land while his opponent took easy chest marks.

On a positive side White did not drop his head and battled strongly to the final siren.

At the moment I am 50/50 on whether he will hold his spot for Rd2.

Rd 6 v Sydney
11 Kicks
5 Handballs
3 Marks
1 goal
2 tackles

Another solid game by Whitey who played in a number of roles during the game. Started off on Adam Goodes which is a pretty daunting task for anyone and I thought Whitey more than held his own.

Switched forward late and kicked 1.1, unfortunately his miss was after some of the finest individual play courtesy of 'The Champ' Chris Judd.

Will be stiff to get dropped this week but feel he is keeping Paul Bowers seat warm until he is right.

Had a fair few kicked on him by Galea of Port Melbourne. I think it was his first game back after a long break with injury.

What do we see him offering the side in 2012 and beyond?

From what I've seen his overhead marking isn't good enough to play forward and his speed off the mark isn't great either. Disposal is okay though and seems to be very liked at the club.

Talent and potential wise I can't make a case for him as to why he'd be on the list instead of Austin...he's contracted until next year ofcourse.

I just don't know where he'll fit, although Ratts seems to have alot of love for his game as he was pretty much straight back into the seniors after over coming injury.

White's a very tough customer and doesn't leave anything behind on the field.
He may though find it harder to get a game from here on in, as our game plan is demanding our backs to hit and run with the likes of Jamison, Henderson, Duigan, Laidler, Yarran and Tuohy all adept at gaining yardage after taking possession of the ball.

I feel he may struggle to get another contract once the current finishes. He is quite injury prone and has been overtaken by Duigan, Laidler and even Touhy.

Just have to look at Jordan Russell and how hard it is to get back in the side and he is coming from further back.

If he can have a big pre-season and stay fit I am sure he will see senior action next year. But my gut feeling is next year may be his last.

Long term, White's only hope could be playing a lead up forward like Bret Thornton and Jack Anthony.

Three wins for work ethic
“We were lucky. All of us had seen a bit of him, and I probably pushed a bit harder just to get him because I thought we needed that type a player - a player able to play at both ends,” Rogers said.

“For us he’s probably better suited forward, but for him he’s probably better suited back. I reckon we can probably cover him across half-back with Paul Bower and those blokes and we don’t have that forward that can be hard at the footy, lead up and be the hit-up forward.
Three wins for work ethic

I loved this goal.

Think its going to be Whites year

Bigfooty Blues Round 5 Player Focus - Simon White

Nice work Wookie. I agree. I think he belongs in our best 22, and still has improvement in him with more game time at AFL level. Laidler will have to get back to his very best to push him out.

I thought Whitey was quite good once again on Saturday afternoon.

Doesn't have any particular outstanding attribute to his game, just seems to be a very solid and well-rounded footballer who does the basics right.

A real highlight for mine has been his repeat defensive efforts. They have been fantastic and they are the exact sort of thing that Mick and the coaching staff will be looking for across the board. From the above video, the spoil on Henderson from behind followed up by the desperation to beat Wright to the ball in a 2 on 1 contest is a real highlight. That follows on from last week when White (as highlighted in the plays of the day video) flung himself into a 2 on 1 contest and split the pack open which resulted in Yarran's brilliant running goal.

Of course the above-mentioned incidents are just isolated incidents, and clearly are not the sole justification for retaining a player in the senior side. Selfless acts cannot be used to keep someone in the side despite poor performances, but those selfless acts are exactly what good sides are built on. On top of those efforts, Simon has been very solid defensively and offers us flexibility that we just don't get from the likes of Bootsma or Davies at this stage in their respective careers.

Mick and the rest of the coaching staff will have loved those individual efforts and you can bet your bottom dollar that both were highlighted to not just Whitey but the rest of the playing group as an example of the expected level commitment and dedication on the field. If he continues to put in solid performances and continues to demonstrate that sort of hunger, he's going to be damn hard to overlook.

I had White in my best 22 over the preseason and whilst that didn't eventuate from round 1, he's forced his way into the side and from the looks of things won't be giving up his spot without one hell of a fight.

White: Blues building

"People are going to judge us on the next four games, so we need to play the way we want to play and be competitive in those games. If we can win four so be it, but we're really focusing on this week and a big match on Friday night."

White: Blues building

We are building and Simon is no doubt building alongside.

Has put in a few sub-par performances but bounced back on Saturday afternoon.

Clearly liked by Malthouse and it is easy to see why. Very solid footballer, certainly not out of place at the top level and is contributing nicely.

He doesn't mind dishing out a good old fashioned hip and shoulder when needed as well.

Extremely courageous, that hip and shoulder on Jacobs was great to see. Acts like that will cement his place in the team :thumbsu:

White signs for 2014

Simon White's long and frustrating journey back to full fitness has paid off, with the Carlton defender re-signing for 2014 this week.
White signs for 2014

Well done Simon. :thumbsu:

Takes a lot of guts and determination to return from a fractured neck. He was out there on Monday so hopefully he gets in another full preseason to give himself the best possible opportunity of staying on the list post-2013.
