Simonds Stadium (Geelong) - Discussion

The thing with BBL is that while expansion is inevitable, there is going to be a natural cap on how long the season can be and thus how many teams there can be because CA don't want the BBL to stuff up the other formats.

And simple population puts Canberra and the Gold Coast ahead of Geelong and if Newcastle ever invested in a stadium they'd get a team as well.

Good to see the ball is rolling for the final stage of redevelopment, with the Ford stand and Gary Ablett Terrace (northern end, left of screen) set to be demolished, as well as a slight refurb of the hickey stand (eastern wing, opposite from broadcast side).

Also it has been mentioned that Geelong will request 9 home games in 2018, which seems about right. 2 blockbuster MCG home matches, along with 9 Simonds Stadium matches seems like a good balance. Having a couple of games against higher drawing clubs would be good for the club and community, and financially SS games are much more suitable than MCG or Etihad games, as they make a profit of around $500K per game. What do supporters of other clubs (particularly Melbourne clubs) think of this?
Oh, and ship Etihad off, too.

"PLANNING for the final stage of the Simonds Stadium redevelopment will get underway soon with the Victorian State Government committing $3.9 million to planning and design in Tuesday's budget."

"The pledge will set in motion the redevelopment of the Ford Stand and the Ablett and Southern Terrace increasing the ground's capacity to 40,000."

"The Cats will request nine home games in 2018 and has indicated it sees Simonds Stadium as a potential finals venue in the future."

Dig it. Renovations look good.
So long as Geelong home EM games are at the MCG, and Finals v Melbourne clubs are at the MCG I have no problem with how many home games Cats get in Geelong.

No argument, possibly 3 games at the MCG against the bigger clubs considering the crowds they can draw but absolutely no home games at Etihad. The stadium looks great

Looks excellent. Also looks like they put more seating in the old standing room area

Hawks can play there. And keep the Easter Monday as a home Hawks game

Everybody wins financially

Is the GMHBA name coming in next year or the year after? Already dreading the drilling from the entire AFL community about that mouthful. Seriously, any other of our sponsors could have sufficed here. Momentum? Bloody hell. GMHBA Stadium. Good christ.

The name comes in next year... I suppose it's all about the financial stuff though... If it's a good deal for Geelong then so be it. I suspect it is already Kardinia Park for many, and if not it will become that soon.

It's still Skilled to most people I talk to, or a Kardinia Park to the die yards...but honestly no one calls it Simonds as it is.

Loads of people called it Simonds, it's the seventh year it's been under that name.
