MCG Ground dimensions: 160 metres x 141 metres
Gabba: 156 metres x 138 metres
SCG: 149 metres x 136 metres
Etihad: 159.5 metres x 128.8 metres
Adelaide Oval: 167.05 x 123.93
Domain: 175.6 metres x 122.4 metres
Simons : 170 metres x 115 metres

The above is a list of the main stadiums at which the AFL play. Simons is the narrowest.

It stands to reason if your home ground is 26 metres narrower than the ground at which the Grand Final is played, your strategy and structure would be different to teams who play on a wider ground.

In my mind this gives Geelong a massive advantage over all other teams and explains their record there.

If they play half their regular season games at Simons, they are almost guaranteed to make finals regardless of their relative team strength.

I am not sure how this can be resolved to remove a permanent advantge to one team? Maybe the AFL need to modify the fixture so Geelong do not get so many home games.

Yeah I don't have a problem with it, works both ways.

Just shows though that when they go out betting outsiders at home, it'd better be a pretty solid side against them to get the choccies.

It's two sets of four sticks and a ball being kicked around by two teams, not an exercise where a group of 70,000 scientists are all working around the clock trying to develop a way to re-float Atlantis via genetically modifying seawater - its footy.

If you can't kick the thing straight or tackle properly, stiff shit.

I'm not here to troll or bag anyone - the thread title just caught my eye - but f*** me. Domain is nearly the same dimensions - should the eagles start playing their home games in Melbourne? Geez, the teams based at the MCG during the home and away season, do they complain about the advantage they get in the biggest games of the year come September?

It definitely makes a difference and is one of the reasons the AFL is so interesting ... when you play rugby or soccer anywhere in the world the ground is the same dimension (give or take a few metres), in AFL **** it whatever paddock is at hand will do.

So. Cricket and golf don't. Tennis has different surfaces. Every sport has its differences. It's two teams trying to achieve the same thing at the same time on the same ground.

Yeah it's not a science as you correctly said, just something that needs to be adjusted to.

It goes both ways too, so it's really not a big deal at all. Sydney's ground is almost the complete opposite, yet they still know how to win down there so there's no excuses.

I really don't care what the games played on or where I'd watch it if it was played on the moon, but to compare footy with golf is ludicrous.

Now try and tell me about soccer and it's one hundred different surfaces or gridiron or basket ball or tennis..... yes they do, but the fields, courts are of exact size.

Hmmm why?
Equality.

If it was about equality they'd be the same surface everywhere. The rules dictate that the size of the ground is the same. They do not in Australian rules.

I can compare it to whatever I want.

Why not make golfers all tee off at the same time, shotgun start style, so that none are disadvantaged?

If it's that easy to base a game plan around the dimensions of the ground, clubs should start training on specifically marked grounds each week depending on who they play.

You aren't all there are you?

I only gave examples, i dont care

Works both ways same as soccer around the world. Every pitch has its own dimensions and surface angle some are convex/flat/concave whatever. It's like the swans and the SCG. Good teams play all grounds well not just their home ground. It's the coaches fault for not adapting the game plan and ball movement to suit the grounds dimensions.

Sorry, but this is a thread full of whinging Tigers. Complaining about home grand advantage when we got a draw like ours in 2017? It's a bit rich and makes us look like terribly sore losers.

We play away games at our home ground. Not our place to complain.

We were poor, they were better. Stop making lame excuses.

geelol get the easiest schedule year round due to getting a bunch of games at their doctored home ground then only having to travel an hour to mcg

It sucks that a team can be based somewhere and not somewhere else.

What's next, we get an advantage because there isn't as much traffic on the way to the ground?

You have examples that suggest every ground is different and then proceeded to suggest that one ground is too different for your liking.

mind your tone, remember which board you are on

Yeah I know, like I said I'm not here to troll or whatever term anyone wants to use, I just find it a nonsensical argument

dude, youre pushing the troll line very closely, esp with your last post

if you wanna go "rfc suck arse lol", stick to your own board or the main. this is a tigs board, remember that, you are a guest

You read it wrong then.

Why are you even here?

I haven't said it anywhere - on my board, this one, or the main one.
The last post I made in the game thread was to wrap them. They had an ordinary day today, it doesn't make them rubbish all of a sudden and they will still be thereabouts when it matters. They're a good side and even today it was on show periodically. I haven't disrespected anyone, or if I have it hasn't been intentional.
