Round 1 vs Adelaide Crows at Adelaide Oval

In what was a one sided contest on Saturday, the Adelaide Crows outgunned an undermanned Fremantle Dockers side to run out 55 point victors in their round 1 eAFL clash at Adelaide Oval.

After opening up a 24 point lead in the first quarter, the Crows went on to win every quarter in a dominant display as their midfield overpowered the Dockers as their forwards made the most of that supply to outscore Fremantle 27 scoring shots to 17.

The Crows were led by ruckman Reilly O'Brien who won the ruck battle against Freo's Darcy 15 hitouts to 9, ex Pies wingman Paul Seedsman who collected 19 possessions and second year forward Lachlan Murphy kicking 5 goals. While for Fremantle, second year mid Brett Bewley combined with skipper Nat Fyfe to lead Fremantle's possession tally with 23 and 20 touches respectively, while debutant Sam Sturt collected 14 touches and a goal in a promising start to his eAFL career in a dirty day for the Dockers.

MATCH-UPS :
  • While the match-up was a bit of a side-show, Adam Cerra and Rory Atkins were well-matched - there was no victor. - 95m from 4 to 99.
  • In quite a tussle, Bailey Banfield came out tops over the brave Wayne Milera. - 99m from 0 to 99.
  • Neither having much reason to brag, Ethan Hughes either broke even with Ben Davis or vaguely bested him - it was hard to tell. - 3m from 17 to 20.
  • While worlds weren't set on fire, I'm not sure that what Lachie Schultz did to Ben Davis should be entirely legal. - 62m from 34 to 96.
  • Spending most of the game pushing and shoving each other, Billy Frampton did very well against Brennan Cox. - 21m from 5 to 26.
  • Neither having much reason to brag, not much between Ethan Hughes and Billy Frampton - the former was probably a smidgeon better. - 37m from 55 to 92.
  • In a resume-material performance, Darcy Tucker won the bout with Brad Crouch. - 99m from 1 to 100.
  • Regardless that this wasn't a huge game for either player, Brennan Cox had Luke Brown's measure. - 68m from 28 to 96.
  • Toe to toe throughout, Taylor Walker and Brett Bewley were well-matched - there was no victor. - 93m from 0 to 93.
  • Regardless that this wasn't a huge game for either player, Sam Sturt won the bout with Brodie Smith. - 93m from 5 to 98.
  • While not all all one-way, Cam McCarthy was slightly more polished than Rory Sloane. - 99m from 0 to 99.
  • In a comparatively small-fry arm wrestle, Chayce Jones did well against Michael Walters. - 50m from 42 to 92.
  • In quite a display, Daniel Talia exposed Rory Lobb's frailties. - 67m from 31 to 98.
  • In quite a tussle, Griffin Logue had the better of Darcy Fogarty. - 78m from 3 to 81.
  • Neither having much reason to brag, Rory Laird did well against Ethan Hughes. - 5m from 43 to 48.
  • Spending most of the game pushing and shoving each other, not much between Fisher McAsey and Matt Taberner - the former was probably a smidgeon better. - 37m from 5 to 42.
  • Regardless that this wasn't a huge game for either player, Fisher McAsey exposed Reece Conca's frailties. - 49m from 49 to 98.
  • While not all all one-way, Nat Fyfe was slightly more polished than Jake Kelly. - 100m from 0 to 100.
  • While the match-up was a bit of a side-show, not much between Paul Seedsman and James Aish - the former was probably a smidgeon better. - 58m from 0 to 58.
  • Bordering on a training run, I'm not sure that what Lachlan Murphy did to Luke Ryan should be entirely legal. - 72m from 13 to 85.
  • In what was a very slow day for both, Luke Ryan had Tyson Stengle's measure. - 93m from 6 to 99.
  • In a bit of an exhibition, Paul Seedsman did a demolition job on Matt Taberner. - 36m from 64 to 100.
  • In quite a tussle, Tom T Lynch came out tops over the brave Mitchell Crowden. - 81m from 14 to 95.
  • Spending most of the game pushing and shoving each other, not much between Reece Conca and Tom T Lynch - the former was probably a smidgeon better. - 3m from 1 to 4.
  • In what became a bit of a clinic, I'm not sure that what Reilly O'Brien did to Sean Darcy should be entirely legal. - 100m from 0 to 100.

Round 2 vs Port Adelaide at Perth Stadium

Well we opened our account on Wednesday, having suffered a heavy defeat in Round 1 we bounced back strongly with a raft of changes seeing us dominate a brave Port Adelaide on our home deck. After a bltizkrieg in the opening stanza saw us open up a handy 39 point lead at the first change with 9 first quarter goals, from there we were never headed, running away winners by 52 points in our first game of the season at Perth Stadium.

After eight changes to the side that were embarrassed by the Crows last week, the changes paid immediate dividends, with young mids Adam Cerra and Andy Brayshaw relishing more responsibility and extra time in the engine room, Cerra in particular putting on a clinic with 38 touches and a pair of goals in a best afield display. Forward Rory Lobb moved into the ruck and won the ruck battle against former Eagle Lycett, as he pushed forward to provide an aerial threat in our forward 50, a move seeing him kick 4 goals in a huge performance. Skipper Fyfe was well held, but still managed to collect 18 touches and 2 goals, Michael Walters split his time between attack and midfield and nabbed 3 majors, while rookie Hayden Young enjoyed a solid debut with 16 touches from a half back flank.

The Power were well served by former skipper Boak, and outside runners Duursma, Amon and Byrne-Jones, while Charlie Dixon made a successful return to footy with 4 majors to lead the Port attack.

Geez - no second chances in this squad.

I was pushing for Hill to be dropped, not Dardy. This is fine though: McCarthy can just work on his dance moves instead.
Not sure you can refine perfection.

There was a ground swell to get the youth in and put Hill onto the wing for Acres. Was tossing up dropping Acres but I reckon he'd love a crack at his old side on their home deck so he gains a reprieve.

McCarthy can go back to ePeel and work on doubling his possessions to 2 per game and force his way back in on form.

Round 3 vs St Kilda at Marvel Stadium
We travelled to Marvel Stadium for Round 3 to tackle the Saints on Sunday, with both teams coming in off a win with a renewed confidence. Both sides were looking to consolidate their season early on, and a win would give the victors a second win on the trot and some much needed momentum in a shortened season. After a first half that saw both sides evenly matched, we pulled away in the second half on the back of some Jesse Hogan heroics, winning the last 3 quarters to steamroll the Saints by 41 points under the roof.

Hogan was the hero of the day with 8 majors, while debutants Caleb Serong and Liam Henry performed strongly in their AFL debuts. The former shifting into the ruck in an unprecedented move and managed to win the hitouts for the club 17-13, while small forward Henry crumbed to Hogan well all day and managed two goals and looked lively all day. Lobb was in ominous form again with 29 touches as he relished a free reign with Serong taking the taps, while skipper Nat Fyfe with 25 touches, and developing inside mid Darcy Tucker with 21 touches and 3 goals giving Freo a midfield ascendancy.

The Saints were well served by impressive young forward Wilkie with 5 goals, Marshall toiled manfully in the ruck with 27 touches of his own, with mids Billings and Dunstan combining for 49 touches between them.

Round 4 vs Carlton at Perth Stadium
Round 4, and we hosted the winless Blues at Perth Stadium, looking for our third win in a row, after a thumping away win at Marvel Stadium against the Saints. A tight tussle for three quarters, Carlton eventually wrestled the ascendancy in the last quarter, their 6 goals in the final stanza to our 2 sealing the Blues their first win of the season, while the loss sees us sitting at 2-2 after the first month of e-AFL.

Hogan again contributed strongly up forward with 5 goals, with Rory Lobb putting in another dominant display in the ruck, not only winning the hitouts 12-10, but also leading all possession getters on the field with 27 touches and a goal. James Aish played his best game for the club since coming over from the Pies in the off season with 20 touches but a wasteful 3 behinds in front of goal, while Andy Brayshaw pushed forward to pinch two goals to go with his 18 disposals. Cerra and Hill were in our best, while the skipper Fyfe was well held but still managed 21 touches.

For the Blues, former skipper Murphy was influential with 20 disposals, Charlie Curnow managed 4 goals, Paddy Dow with his 18 touches and a goal broke even with Fyfe in their one on one duel, and the ever dangerous Eddie Betts bobbed up for 4 goals from his 7 touches.

Long wait for Valente is over
505 days since being drafted to the Fremantle Dockers with pick 32 in the 2018 AFL Draft, midfielder Luke Valente has been named to make his e-AFL debut this Sunday against the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba. The young SA man is set to give the famous #29 a rebirth at the port club, having finally overcome a long battle with injury to earn a long overdue senior call up.

When asked how he felt about making his debut after such a long road, Valente expressed an overriding feeling of relief and excitement to finally pull on the purple.

"There's a lot of relief, I was waiting around for it and yeah I'm really excited. There's a lot going through my head at the moment but yes probably excitement is the main one."

When asked if he'd had any friends and family contacting him with any well wishes the midfielder responded with a laugh.

"(Has your phone blown up?) Ahh I turned it off, so yeah I'll get to that in a sec,I think a few of my mates will be pretty happy"

Valente was excited to finally debut and shrugged off talk of any pressure wearing the famous guernsey for the first time since Pavlich finished his illustrious career in 2016.

"Obviously, Pav being a champion of this club, being a South Australian boy and a champion of the AFL is someone that I've looked up to a fair bit," Valente said.

"Maybe there's pressure from the outside, but I'll be keen to put my own mark on the number as well and take what Pav's done and create my own legacy hopefully."

Pavlich himself can't wait to see Valente don his old jumper.

"Besides the fact he is a Rostrevor (College) boy – arch-rivals of Sacred Heart over there in Adelaide – that's probably the only downside to handing the jumper over to Luke, but thrilled the jumper is back out there," Pavlich said.

"Luke's a tremendous character from what I hear, state under-18s captain like I was, school captain at Rostrevor, vice-captain of the All Australian team, had a fabulous carnival.

"He seems like a really great character and person to continue that tradition.

"I guess from the external masses there will be (pressure) … but I know as a young player growing up you put a huge amount of expectation on yourself.

"Luke being a high performer, high achiever, not only at school but in his footballing career, will have huge expectations on himself as well.

"Don't underestimate what (expectations) a young man has for their career."

The young mid comes into the side at the expense of 2020 recruit Blake Acres. Below is Fremantle's side named to take on the Brisbane Lions on Sunday.

Round 5 vs Brisbane at the Gabba
Round 5 saw us travel to the Gabba to take on the Lions with both sides poised at 2-2 and looking for a chance to win and break away from the middle order logjam on the ladder. Coming off a disappointing loss at home against a lowly Blues outfit, we responded strongly away, matching it with Brisbane the first half, then breaking away in the second half as we slammed on 13 goals to the Lions' 6 to runaway comfortable winners in a shootout by 38 points.

e-Doig clubhouse leader Cerra was all class again in another best afield effort, while Jesse Hogan continued his surge up the Coleman ranks with another big bag of 7 goals up front.

Hogan again Livewire Lachie Schultz repaid the faith of the selectors bobbing up for 4 goals in his return match to continue his impressive start to the year, while skipper Nat Fyfe put in his best performance of the e-AFL season to date. Darcy Tucker continued to build on his solid run of form in 2020, as Michael Walters proved a handful mixing his time between midfield and attack, and emerging young leader Andy Brayshaw went head to head with former housemate Lachie Neale and won that battle convincingly. Rory Lobb was again dominant in the ruck, while Stephen Hill turned back the clock with a vintage performance on the wing.

For the Lions, Daniel McStay also dobbed 7 majors for his side in a powerful display, while mids Bailey and McCluggage gave the Lions plenty of possession and drive particularly in the first half. Former Docker Lachie Neale was well held and largely ineffective, his 19 touches and 2 behinds well down on his typical form that saw him earn his first All-Australian berth in 2019.
