The funnel analogy as it applies to an AFL player is instructive - you start with literally tens of thousands of kids in Junior ranks culling all the way thru Youth Footy , Development Squads , Colts , PSA , State Footy , Academy kids and then get a precious few come out in the Draft. Incredible odds against making it because once you're drafted the bar goes up even higher to be a consistent AFL player , let alone a star or champion.
I coached a couple and coached against a few more that were very draftable , most were overlooked but 3 made it on to Rookie lists a few years ago.
All were deadest guns as 18 year olds - two never played a game and will play WAFL this year , the third was re-rookied and hopes to get a run at some stage this year.
Tough gig , so glad we got Hendo, Tuohy and danger - many good years ahead for each of them. As they say a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush
