A few reasons, the main one probably being that Knighthoods and Damehoods have not been part of Australian honours since 1986. (I did have to look that up, but was fairly sure we didn't do knighthoods any more.)

But you can get a French equivalent (a Chevalier).

I say we canvass the French Govt to make him Chevalier Richie Benaud. The French have nothing to do with cricket but he has a French name.
 
He's got an OBE for services to cricket, which he got just after retiring. Knighthoods for Australians are practically extinct these days - those who do get them, tend to get them for services to the United Kingdom.

I think the bigger question is why he has never been inducted to the Order of Australia. Perhaps they're waiting for him to retire.

He actually owns property/wine yards is France (true).

If youve listened to the 12th man, he says something like "Ive bought a beautiful little wineyard in France in a place called Verdaflore. Im going to name it Chateu Verdaflore." (say it quickly).
