First of all this is not an attack of Buddy Franklin, I believe he is the finest player in the game, and his talent is unmatched in the AFL.

However, the highlight of yesterdays game for me was in the opening 2-3 Minutes of the game. Buddy had put a late hit on someone (Bell?) (It was marginally late – Maybe a free kick? Maybe not) In any case two Melbourne boys didn’t like the attention given and decided to make a statement against the games best.

First of all Brent Moloney ran straight through Buddy putting him to the ground, it was a big collision and nothing illegal about it, Buddy stayed on the ground for about 5 seconds before he got up, only for Nathan Jones to do the exact same thing. Jones gave away the free kick, but it was worth it. It set the tone for the game, and showed a spirit and physical presence which usually isn’t there. I personally loved it and is ranked only just behind the last quarter against Freo, as the highlights for this year.

Whilst on Moloney, he played a great game yesterday, for a guy who has spent time at Sandringham this year, that was a great performance.

I love our young players in the midfield. They don't take shit from anyone.

Beamer has played well since Bailey blasted him during the Freo game. His work in packs has been very good and he is now a legitimate inside player.

Buddy as good as he is he doesn't like the physical attention and when it is given out he sooks on the ground. I'm not saying he is a frontrunner, he kicked plenty of goals in the finals last year, but he is almost physically weak at times.

Moloney's hit was good and fair. Jones was just pissweak. He smacked him as he's getting up so he couldn't defend himself. I'm not one to defend Buddy as if he's a protected species as I'd be saying the same thing if he did it to Campbell Brown, but Jones is a coward. I'd be ashamed of any hawk who did that to his opponent, and certainly have been in the past

I seriously doubt you would have admitted to supporting the Hawks pre 2007.

Get off our board fairweather.
Mate you have to learn not to make stupid comments as well. It doesn't make you look any good.

We all understand that Jonesy did the wrong thing. We all know that he will be looked at and what he did was reportable. But for you guys to bicker like this makes you guys look bad.

Jones is a fiesty little bastard and I am a huge wrap for the kid. He reminds me of Jordan Lewis, I just hope he doesnt start getting singled out by the umpires, nor do I hope that Jones starts doing the stupid things Lewis does.

Buddy gets attacked every week, he hits the deck for free kicks, if he doesnt get them he goes on the front foot. There isnt a week go by that Buddy doesnt get special attention, he is used to it, and he seems to like it (see the Essendon game where he kicked 9 in retaliation to the constant attention).

Melbourne look better when there is full field pressure, you guys have to keep it up. You got some good kids coming through, its a shame you have a couple washed up players sitting in your 22.

Buddy bumped Moloney, thats why he got stuck into him.

Of course Moloney is going to do that, he isnt the best footballer but is good when he wants to be at providing a physical presence. He needs to do that alot more for you guys.

davey magik - Buddy loves the bumps, he dished them out (PJ) and ran as hard at the contest as i've seen. He threw Woona around like a rag doll in the 4th.

That's a preposterous comment. If you’re ashamed of any hawk that does that to his opponent, you must be ashamed a lot.

Hawthorn has risen to success by being overly physical, giving away free kicks at times and sometimes going to far and getting suspended. That’s what Melbourne did yesterday, made the hawks feel their presence. Buddy came in a bit late on the unsuspecting Bell, so his team mates backed him up, being a Hawthorn supporter you should know something about protecting your team mates, the hawks do it better then anyone.

Jones' hit was off the ball and he got penalised for it, but i'm far from ashamed of it. It set the tone for the game, that we weren't going to take sh!t physically as we have in the past. It's never good to give away a free kick, but from that point on Melbourne showed the hawks that they wouldn't be bullied out of the game, as the hawks have done to other teams.

The thing i was most proud about yesterday was our physicality. We've never had a lot of physical players, beside the champion we farewelled yesterday. At times i've watched other teams a little jealously, richmond of late is one that comes to mind, that might not be winning but they're hard at it with a get the ball at all costs approach. Yesterday that was my team and that felt great.

Winning would've been great and i'm never happy when we lose, but i couldn't be prouder of the way we played

Mate get over the fact that your team lost to the hawks. The fact that you guys stopped after having the lead over us for most of the game doesn't really help your cause.

Threw Wonna around like a rag doll? Was that when he tackled Wonna from behind when Wonna did not even have the ball.

I'm not saying he is soft as he won't go when it is his turn, but he does seem physically weak. I remember Beau Waters got him a few years ago and he didn't get up for a while (Can't remember if he was injured or not).

Not to take anything away from the Dees, they were fantastic today. I thought you guys played the best, hardest football of anyone we've played this year.

But, Jones' soft hit shouldn't be something to brag about. I don't see any hawk supporters saying "Crawford really showed Brogan how much of a pussy he is by that big punch to his stomach. Love his toughness" or "Jordan Lewis is a great tough player who always goes the ball and put Daniel Pratt in his place"

I'm not proud of cheap hits by Hawk players, just like you shouldn't be proud of Jones

Wonna milked it for what it was worth.... Nothing much in it mate. Good young players know how to get away with some great free kicks.

I never said i was proud of it, just not ashamed. I'd be more ashamed if the players didn't back up their mate.

Yes it was outside the laws of the game and he was punished accordingly. But i'd rather our players be physical and on occasion go too far, as with this incident, then be soft.

There's a fine line between being disciplined & tough and taking it too far. Hawthorn players regularly cross it. I'd rather be dancing close to the line then be no where near it and be considered soft. Melbourne has been on the soft side for a long time, so too see some hardness brings me much happiness.

Physically weak, i think he's getting stronger with alot more room to go.

I've seen numerous times when Buddy has up ended stronger and physically mature bodies. I.e Wheatley in Rd 1.

He can also break tackles.

Buddy was in his 2nd year when Waters hit him. Waters is one of the toughest blokes and pound for pound would be one of the strongest. He is young but has an already mature body, similar to a Nathan Jones.

Regardless of size, if you hit someone in the right spot its going to hurt.

Buddy came across as pretty skinny, but has developed his strength each year and I think he’s starting to realise that.

P.s Woona had the ball and coughed it up (shit himself)..

Your board, so I'll try not to offend, but that is utter rubbish.

Buddy puts up with this crap every week, laughs it off, gives it back, and then kicks goals. He is one of the few players in the AFL that sides shouldn't waste their time trying to rough up because it just doesn't work.

Physical attention doesn't bother him the slightest.

Great game yesterday though.

It was a line in the sand moment. it might not have been the most "honorable" hit but it showed that melbourne were not only playing for Neitz but for each other and they weren't going to allow Hawthorn to push them around

dude Buddy has 20cm and 25kg on aussie. i can go down to the local high school and throw some year 7's around if i want. it would hardly prove that i'm a tough guy who loves a contest

Mate we are on the same page with this, I couldnt care less if Buddy cops this everyweek, nextweek, its not of my interest or concern - We are both talking about Melbourne dishing it out, We have lacked a physical presence for far too long, we both saw this yesterday and loved what we saw yesterday.

and if he was physically weak he may not have been able to do that...

I think because he is tall and lean you perceive him as 'weak'...

Watch his one on one contests.

It was good Melbourne showed some fight the free kick you got was definately played on but Jones was stupid to give it away so easily. Still sometimes you gotta accept them to set the team standards as our team always does (although some suspensions have been for some pretty silly stuff)

What was really interesting is that before the opening bounce Garland went to Buddy and gave him a bit of push and shove nothing new there, every single team tries to rough up buddy to no avail, but he must of said something as well because Buddy's reaction was unprecedented from him, usually he just gives the shove back, but instead he fully grabbed garlands jumper and was swinging him, if the ump saw would have been close to a free kick. Anyone else see this?

Rubbish, he put it out in front without taking possession to get himself a free for holding the man because he knew he couldn't outrun Buddy because lets be honest few can, but the umpire was on crack and has a McAvaney like love for Buddy so called it play on.

Maybe Buddy thought he could intimidate Garland because he's young, where as most of Buddy's opponents are usually seasoned players who try to intimidate him. Don't think it was a free and I hate when they do pay those frees because usually there is nothing in it and it ruins the start of a game.

throwing around someone both 25kg lighter and 20cm smaller than you does not take strength

if you don't believe me i suggest you go and pick a fight with a middle school kid and then go and find the biggest tallest bouncer you can and try the same thing. you will be surprised at how little effort it takes you to beat the kid and how little effort it takes the bouncer to do the same to you

All this time I thought I was a tough guy, it was a good feeling making those high school kids cry...ah well, it was good while it lasted.

So you're ashamed of Shane Crawford then?
