Agree.
Just that I had this conversation about him last week, and he seems so durable and effective compared with Selwood lately.

True, but Sel had a pretty good year last year, and this is his first season where he's had any real injury issues. Has still played 20 of a possible 22 games, and was vital in Clark's fast tracked development this year on the wing. Not bad for someone who everyone thinks is 'cooked' and 'past it.' If he has surgery/rehab in the off season and smashes out a good pre-season, there is no reason why he can't get back to his best. Most dedicated and rigorous preparer (barring Ablett) at the club. If anyone can bounce back next year, it's him

Hawkins named because it was a joke he missed last year. Probably should of missed this year.
Who replaces him? and don't say BB

Hawkins 52 goals, 24 goal assists, score involvements 160, free kicks 13 (directly involved in 76 goals)
BB 62 goals, 4 goal assists, score involvements 141, free kicks 44 (directly involved in 66 goals)

Basically BB needs to get out of the 90s and try to help his team not just himself..Forwards need to do more than just kick goals these days

If we include score involvements and goal assists then hawkins was clearly in the side last year ahead of riewoldt with only franklin close to him.

In a broader, team view kind of way, we should also be happy to have AA selections across the field (backs, mids, forwards).
Speaks of team balance.

We go all the way this year, and that may well be career done for Ablett and Selwood.

Selwood now seems at a similar stage to Ling in 2011, whereby you could see him playing on for a year but not surprised he retired when he did.

People were even harsher about Harry last year. Gaz was going to have to give it up after injury on more than one occasion. Lot of premature obituaries being written.

Selwood could accept a GC offer if we win it?

What is with all the Selwood possible retirement talk? He is contracted for another 2 years and the club would have to find a way to either pay out his contract or "retires" and picked up as a rookie until he sees out his contract

If he has to retire due to medical reasons then there may be ways around that, but that's not an easy thing to prove.

I'm 100% certain we won't be seeing a shock retirement announcement from Selwood at the end of this season, and would be genuinely surprised if he's not at the club for another 2 years.

Ablett should have been in over Hawk, sorry to say. Hawk was great for the first half of the year, but woeful in the second half. Ablett has been consistent 80-90% of the year and should have been a lock (also would have been better team balance too). Pendlebury should have made way for another backman (Haynes, Rampe or Sheppard), and Gawn should have made way for Boak. That was my ideal team, as Darling just pipped Hawk for team balance. McGovern was good without being great, but not overly controversial given it was between him, Blics and Talia. Still, not the worst team I've seen. Pendles is a much better 'shock selection', than Shane Edwards. Houli was pretty lucky too, but also pretty consistent this year. Happy with Stewie, Kelly and Danger though, well deserved.

Woeful is a slight exaggeration. He still kicked 21 goals in the back end of the season and in a couple of the games where he didn’t have a massive scoreboard impact he was still very good working further up the ground.

We - not just this forum but all teams really - have a horrible habit of assessing players against their absolute peak form rather than what constitutes normal form across the competition.

There’s a good example of it with the Selwood discussion in this thread - is he as good as he was 5 years ago?

Of course not.

Does that make him garbage or ‘cooked?’ Of course not.

It’s like dropping a batsman with a career average of 55 because he’s been averaging 45 over the last two years.

Only if we win the flag.
And not retirement, but maybe like the Hodge role at Lions.

Maybe more method to the madness of Danger not being nominated by his teammates:

Leaderboard: Leigh Matthews Trophy for the Most Valuable Player

1. Patrick Cripps (Carlton) – 832 votes
2. Tim Kelly (Geelong) – 519
3. Lachie Neale (Brisbane Lions) – 481
4. Brodie Grundy (Collingwood) – 355
5. Nat Fyfe (Fremantle) – 303

The performance on the week-end just shows how meaningless the AA 40 man squad is.
