Has anyone got Six Sigma certification/belts?
Is it worth paying for? Are there free certifications online (I can find course material online but no certifications. Maybe that isn't even a problem?)

Cheapest I have found is $99 but given there isn't really a governing body/national recognition to this like there is a masters degree is it worth even paying for?

What are people's experiences/thoughts/advice?

I don't think you'll find free certifications anywhere. Even $99 is good! Mine cost a few thousand (but work paid for it).

It's great as long as you have some business experience and prior training (e.g. a business degree or something). It's almost like a post-grad industry accreditation, companies like seeing it on your resume, and a lot of what they teach is actually really useful to develop yourself as a business person.

But if you don't have a good business background, it's likely a lot of stuff will go straight over your head. Or you won't know how to implement any of their techniques.

Yeah it's extra curricular. Plenty of workforce planning/reporting experience + AD of Business but looking for a change from my current role. Didn't want to take time studying something that isn't of much use anymore is all. From what you say it's worth doing

From a little more looking around, Scrum/Agile seems to be the buzz thing atm?

Look into DevOps.

What’s your current background / education / role & future plans ?
I wouldn’t be hooked up on a six-sig... But, the right training ( whatever it is ) can make a difference to the right person and their specific future plans.

Workforce planning/reporting & HR systems work. Have a business diploma and want to get into project management

Trouble is I get paid fairly well & unwilling to take a pay cut to go elsewhere which somewhat limits my movements.

Probably need to do Project Management specific study anyway but would feel a waste if it didn't eventuate in a job so wanted extra courses to pad the resume a bit

aaah - sounds like the golden handcuffs... best of luck with that ! I think PM is a very high demand area so possibly worth the investment - and will probably open more doors for you.

Imho i think you could do better with other qualifications though, but thats an opinion only of course and depends on the roles you are after.

I did a quick search across all of seek and there are more opportunities for "degree" , or for "prince2" than "six sigma", if that helps...

I did it through work. I got a big folder and a whole heap of tips (which seemed to me to be common sense more than anything else). The only real change is I now get hassled on a regular basis to get the next belt. It smells too much like a pyramid scam to me for me to take it seriously.

As someone that did a martial art a long time ago, I took exception to saying a two day course means I'm a yellow belt in anything.

Do you still have this opinion, that it's not worth it?

Not so much that's it not worth it - there were some handy tips that I still use. I do think the adherents go overboard in how useful these managerial tools are (for instance, I've seen projects go belly up and cost the organisation millions of dollars after following the process to the letter) and my comment was more about that after a two day course, I don't really consider myself an expert. So for some handy tips, sure it has some use but I'm not convinced it is applicable in every situation. Looking for duplication of effort and minimising handling of your widget (whether that is something that is actually manufactured or a customer or data) is sensible but I don't think it was any big revelation for me to be honest.

I'm not sold I need all of these belts to turn me into some sort of Bruce Lee Management Guru.

Then again, I'm a cynic of the highest order so you probably need to factor that in as well :).
