Do you think the clubs responsible have been penalised enough?

Harsher penalties must be introduced.

Breaching the salary cap enables clubs to have a better playing list than they should. So this is where they should be penalised.

If a club is found in breach of the salary cap...along with draft losses...all of their players should be free game.

A limit would be put on the number of players they could lose (eg 1) and in this case oppostion clubs could sign players up to this limit (ie once one player has been sign by a rival team there can be no more). For more significant breaches it could be 2 or 3 players.

Melbourne chose to cheat to get Jeff White. They knew they could be fined or lose draft picks but they took a concious decision to cheat anyway as those penalties have no immediate effect. They were caught, but got to keep White regardless (mission accomplished)!!! If they knew that if they could be caught then not only could they lose White but Farmer as well then they would have had 2nd thoughts.

ptw good idea except that the players these days except for the elite are all treated like a meat market so this idea while has merits why should the players involved be punished by being forced to go to another club when after all it was at board level that the decision was made.
i say hit them where it hurts in the hip pocket
even the excluding them from draft picks is denying a youngster from playing afl and may be lost to our game altogether.
where as a fine lets say the breach was 100.000 then the fine would be 200.000.
cheers!

Exactly ptw

Melbourne knew the penalties and when they weighed it up, they realised that white was worth just about any penalty.

But the problem ran deeper than that like it does in all cases.By cheating on the salary cap they also penalised the dockers.By forcing freo to only deal with melbourne.Because at the time the dees were last on the ladder and threatened to take him for nothing in the pre season draft.

So fremantle didn't get the best deal in the end and weren't compensated for there loss.

The only compensation we recieved was 3rd pick which snared us pavlich.
Now if he lives up to his potential we may walk away happy.

But this kind has to be stopped.Clubs are doing it intentionally because they realise the rewards are greater than the penalty.

I agree sabre.

In athletics if Ben Johnson takes drugs (ie cheats) what he cheated for (a gold medal) is taken off him and given to the guy who came 2nd. We don't accept any views like "oh but other people cheat all the time"...nope...gone.

In footy you can cheat...win what you want (White) then pay some other penalty. Its a bit like letting Johnson keep his Olympic medal but banning him from running at the next world champs...why would he care ?

Get tough I say.

I see this topic is up again. It is a good opportunity to say that this year in the rugby league nine clubs cheated the salary cap. So to have only three clubs in the AFL being over the salary cap over several years is not so bad in comparison.

The problem is that the salary cap has incredible potential for being rorted.
As I see it all player contracts are reviewed by the AFL before next weeks draft. They add each clubs contracts together and tel them how much is available to pay any player they want to pick up in the draft. And that's it apart from an audit possibility.
If I was an Elliot or Gutnik there is no reason why one of my companies can't decide to employ one of my clubs players as a part-time (very) consultant at $100K a year. Even set up a trust fund and let nobody know til way after the player retires.
As I see it, the crime is 'getting caught'

I read that people say Melbourne accepted the penalties for White. Is a massive fine that would nearly send us broke and loss of significant draft picks worth it for White? I have mixed views about that. I was under the assumption that there were not many at Melbourne that knew about the salary cap breaches which is why they not only attacked White but Peter Matera as well. After 97, I would have thought there is no way Melbourne is anywhere near the cap. How wrong I was!
