I couldn't find another thread about this, so mods take necessary action if one already exists. Anyway, just thought I'd start a thread about something which is often bothers me. I have never been a good sleeper, even from when I was little. I am a light sleeper so the slightest of noises wakes me up, however my issue at the moment is interupted sleep. I reckon for about two months or more I have woken up virtually every night without fail between 7-8AM, regardless of what time I go to bed the night before. Obviously for the most part I'm still tired and go back to sleep, but never manage to sleep for more than another hour or two so I always get out of bed tired. I also often don't get more than one hour of sleep (that's if I'm lucky) if I'm in an unfarmilliar bed, in particular when I've shared a bed with someone else. In terms I've my background, I'm not a stressful person and have hardly stressed in my whole life. Even when I've been unsure of things, I've never felt overwhelmed or anything. I also have quite a healthy diet as I rarely eat fast or processed food nor drink anything that isn't water. I also eat a fair amount of veggies and other homemade stuff, i.e. I'm at a good weight (as much as I'd like to get red of about 3 kgs). I'm sure I'm not the only one with this issue, so I thought this would be a good thread for people to have such a discussion. If anyone has any suggestions I'd appreciate it. :)

Most people would kill to wake up at 7-8am and go back to sleep for another hour or two....

I have found exercise is the best thing to get my sleep patterns under control

My biggest sleep issues are sunday nights. Ever since high school I've got the "Sunday Night Blues" and found it hard to sleep. That has got worse as I've got older and started going out at weekends, which usually/often involves a 6am-7am finish on a sunday morning and will throw my body clock off. my own fault so cant really complain. Still happens when i have a quiet Saturday night though.

Who on earth calls 7am the middle of the night?

It's the morning, your body is waking up, so get up

I'm not waking up at 7AM if I don't have too:p. My point is I might go to bed at 2 or 3, will still wake up at 7 and am consequently having interrupted sleep which means I feel permanently tired....

If I was in your spot Id start waking up when your body wakes up and go from there. If you hit a wall earlier than normal then sleep otherwise go to bed your usual time. Hopefully your body will start to sleep later

But still, waking up in the morning isn't all that bad, after all you're alive when your awake not asleep

And I do this every Sunday, go to sleep around 2-3am and get up for work. Monday night I sleep pretty well for a good 8 hours and for the rest of the week I'm on track

I'm glad the days where I overslept are behind me, now when my body naturally wakes up I get up, if it's 6 7 8 9 or later

I'm sorry, who the hell are you to tell me to get up? The hour I wake up was not the main part of my initial post anyway.....

No but it has a lot to do with your sleeping pattern

We'd need a lot more information on your day to day routine to give better advice

ie why are you up so late/want to sleep in. Are you a shift worker or unemployed? If you are around the house most of the day you might not be burning enough energy to get some good sleep

I agree...I think a "normal body" will pretty much wake up at that time. I could understand if someone was a shift worker etc

I'd start getting up at 7 (when most other people get up) and enjoy the best part of the day. By 10pm you will probably find you want to go to sleep. Would be hard for the first couple of days, but your body is trying to work on a natural clock of dawn and sunset and you are fighting it.

In the US sleeping pills are sold at the supermarket, I bought some and they worked treat, but the last time I used them I was tired all day after a good sleep, now I just lay awake and don't bother with the pills.

Exercise will definitely help your sleep. I wouldn't call 7 am interrupted sleep. I used to go to bed at 9pm exhausted and wake every three hours, and take an hour to fall back to sleep, rinse and recycle. It was torture.
I have used and would definitely recommend valarian root/magnesium as it calms your muscles making it easier to fall asleep. One of my problems was the part of falling asleep.
If I were you, get up at 7 and try push through the day (even on little sleep) you will sleep much better the next couple of nights.

You may have sleep apnoea. I'm getting a sleep test done soon as I think I might have it. No matter how much sleep I get I always feel tired the next day.

Earlier this year i was suffering from bad panic attacks and night-panic attacks.
I would struggle to fall asleep as it was, but when i finally did i would wake up in a panic 1/2 hour to an hour later.
it was really starting effect my health as i went something like 3-4 days straight with no sleep.

I went to the doctor and got some sleeping tablets, i only took them for 2 nights but it got my sleeping pattern back to normal.
I was then able to fall asleep naturally.

I usually have anywhere between 6.5-8 hours, 80% of the time it's 7-7.5.

In summer I'll very, very rarely sleep till 8am, unless I was up till all hours of the morning. In winter I can easily sleep till 8.30. I don't buy into this 'x time is too early' s**t, if it's 7.15am on a day off and I wake up, then I damn well get up.

So hard to get this right, even if you have Saturday night at home.

Haha, yeah I only tried sleeping pills once and they absolutely DESTROYED me the next day.

Was having trouble with sleep due to a) a new job after a couple of years of slacking off and b) eating ludicrous amounts of food for dinner.

Would think nothing about eating a family pizza/garlic bread/1.25 litre coke for tea. Would smash family packs of chips and cocolates most nights too.

Then would go to bed and my guts would be like a balloon with too much air in and you can't sleep like that. Heart racing along all night, not sure if you're going to vomit or if a vital organ would pack it on. get to sleep at maybe 4.00am.

You'd think I'd just stop eating so much s**t but decided to go see the doctor about some tablets instead. He agreed just to get me out of the office and look after proper patients who legitimately required specialist help I think.

told me to just take a half tablet and see how that goes, but I thought that sounded cowardly and took the whole one. Knocked me clean out that night. Nearly slept through the alarm the next morning. turned it off and went straight back to sleep, buy I knew something was wrong and fought through. staggered up and got on the bus. went to sleep, but the bus jerking around kept me up. kept nodding off, and every time my head bobbed down I would wake back up. must have looked like a lunatic for the people sitting behind me. got into work and basically did nothing until lunchtime but smash coffees.

tried to cut back on cream buns and s**t since then and that seemed to work better. Still sometimes eat too much s**t for tea and even as I'm shovelling fishcakes into my mouth and washing it down with chocolate milk and a Monaco bar I know I'll regret it at betime but I don't stop. happens maybe once a month.

As mentioned above, exercise will make a significant difference to your ability to sleep through. Khoi.

Got to be an all time classic post contender surely.
