I think Brown will stay in, leaves us too exposed in the backline if we drop him.

I'm just hoping Fraser makes way, I think we can survive quite easily with Jolly + part timers doing the ruck. I'm just praying we don't push someone like Macaffer out for him.

We will be more exposed in the backline with him in it than without him there

He actually looks more comfortable down back then up forward or ruck.

He also wont do any worse then reid on Gumbleton (who will throw him around like a rag doll) or Nate who is still sadly out of touch

Jake Niall weighs into the discussion in today's Age:

Fraser struggling to find his niche in a Jolly good team
JAKE NIALL

April 22, 2010

ON ANZAC Day 12 months ago, Josh Fraser's opponent, Paddy Ryder, won the Anzac Medal after Essendon's primary ruckman, David Hille, was lost for the season in the opening quarter. Fraser was subsequently accused of ''dogging'' a contest by former St Kilda coach Grant Thomas, a charge that television replays didn't really support.
Collingwood rallied around Fraser, who actually hadn't played that badly on that drizzly afternoon, gaining 19 disposals and 27 hit-outs.

Yep, this.

He is fine to take Gumby or the resting ruckman. Essendon's forwardline is built around two 20 year olds, Brown is cater made to play back there this week and ruffle some feathers. They have two tall blokes up there, but ****, we are hardly talking about Brown and Fevola. Gumby has hardly kicked a goal for the year, we don't need to be bringing in specialised key backs to deal with him

No need for wholesale changes either, Dawes is really the only one demanding a spot, so swap him for an under-performing forward.

I hope Fraser makes way.

He is playing 80-85% floating forward and is simply garbage at it, he can't take an uncontested mark without spilling it, and he cannot hit targets.

Why play a bloke out of position for so long because perhaps 15% of the game he might pitch hit in an area that a part-time could just as suitably take care of? Bring in a real forward like Dawes and allow him 85% to play forward, smash some packs, put a few blokes in headlocks and ultimately earn me a half chub in my frontal pants region.

La-Roy is far to versatile to be dropped, and he is an angry man.

Dave thats not actually very surprising

If you continue reading you'll read that dawes due to injury issues is likely to play as well.

So brown back, Dawes forward, fraser ruck everyone happy.

What i am worried about is Trav hurt his ankle last week, he misses ill be stressing

Well I reckon if Dawes Comes in for Trav, I can't see the Big Difference as Cloke so far has done nothing Special in a AFL Game and It could see how Dawes goes at CHF(Not FF) at AFL Level

Cloke had 8 inside 50s last week, was our strong target and has played more then 100 games, also won a Copeland and is finally getting back to that form

Yeah Dave there is a difference

There is no reason why Fraser should have to acclimitise to anything.

Being a second ruck all of a sudden doesn't excuse being useless when rucking.

If the guy needs to get form back, send him to the VFL to do it. That's what the VFL is there for. The next month is full of vital games, we can't afford to have guys performing badly because they're getting use to a role that they shouldn't even need time to get used to.

I agree Smiddaz. If you need time to get used to playing forward - do it in the VFL where the learning experience wont impact our season.

I'd be surprised if Josh had more than 2 effective taps last week.

Didn't see the VFL game, how would people rate Obree's form?

“I think Josh is adjusting to a second ruck role,” Malthouse said before training on Thursday.

“There’s no question that Darren Jolly is our principle ruckman at this stage."

Malthouse said the adjustment from spending the majority of the match as a ruckman to combining that role with another was something Fraser is still coming to grips with.

"He’ll spend 50 per cent in the ruck and probably 25 to 30 per cent as another type of player, whether it be an additional midfielder, wing or forward", he said.

“And when that settles in and he starts to gain confidence in that, he’ll be the player we want him to be.”

Ugh, sounds like this door is closed and won't be opening anytime soon. If dropping O'Bree was the hardest thing he has done for 5 years, 15 more rounds of Fraser forcing his hand in going to result in suicide I think.

Absolute cop out though, the leniecy and free passes Fraser gets are becoming beyond a joke. Why can't he adapt to his new role in the VFL instead of stinking up our senior team? I'm not a MM basher in the slightest, probably on the contrary, but this is Malthouse stubbornness. Fraser has always been a favourite and he talked about this combination prior to the season starting, now that it is completely failing, he refuses to acknowledge it and do something about it. He is setting a terrible precedent for the senior side at the moment.

"An additional midfielder"? Seriously, we are talking about a bloke who is as slow as a turtle, tough as a bunny rabbit and has the kicking skills of a tuna fish but Malty is touting him as an additional midfielder....

God help us.

Major lulz at that description

If wood was in superduper form id be all for dropping fraser, but please for the love f christ lets just play two rucks constantly

I have a better idea, lets play one ruck and a rock. The rock will probably ruck just as well as Fraser, but provides additional hardness the team needs.

No big difference? Yeah okay.

I hope Trav doesn't miss. He is gradually finding form. Last week was another step in the right direction.

I'd normal agree too, trust me, it's only because we are being forced to that I'm even considering going back to Leroy as a 2nd ruckman.

The fact is though, Fraser is playing so terrible that regardless of our rucking situation, he doesn't deserve to be playing.

We all know that if Wood had started the year as 2nd ruck and Fraser was currently injured, Wood would have definitely been dropped if he put up this sort of form. Malthouse wouldn't hesitate in banishing Wood and resorting to one known ruckman.
The fact that it's Fraser seems to change the issue though and I don't really think it's fair.

Regardless of our structures and setups, bad form needs to be treated in the same way it normally would.
I don't see it as being that different from dropping Jack. Most people would have thought he was essential to our structure, I mean we currently don't have a FF, but bad form was bad form and we made do without him. We can make do without Fraser as well.

Anyway, I reckon I've probably worn this topic out this week :p It'll all be to no avail anyway, end of the day I'm expecting to see
Out: Macaffer
:(

Lol'd

I love O'Bree, as he has been a great servant to our club.

But if he comes back in the side this week (or at any stage) for anything other than an injury to another player.. I will stick a spoon up my ass.

Why would you do that?
How will that make you happier?

When we lose unexpectedly in the coming weeks, after a poor midfield display, there will be many a call for his return.

He's not the answer.

Beams, Wellingham and Sidey are all better players than O'bree already and are only improving. If they do have a bad game, which I'm sure they will.. the answer is not to drop them.

It's either him or ball IMO, and..

He's slower than Ball

Doesn't kick as well (which says something)

Gets less of the ball

And when he does, usually takes 10 minutes to make a decision.

..Great servant, but the game has passed him by.
