Sliding door moments

I was going to mention one from that game. What if the 50 metre penalty had been paid super late in the game for the Bulldogs player running through the protected zone in the middle of the ground? It was totally there, but the umpire missed it. GWS go down and kick that goal, giving them the lead with just over a minute to play. Would have been super difficult for the miraculous dogs to claw their way to one more goal. If it ends up being Sydney vs GWS in that grand final, does anyone give a crap about the result? Would Richmond have rode that 'why not us?" wave all the way to the premiership the following year? Would Melbourne be riding it right now?? I still truly believe that the Tigers flag doesn't happen without the Dogs flag the year before. Take that away and who knows what it would have been like.
C'est la vie - you need so much to go right to win even one flag. Scully was only a 50/50 proposition from that spot had the 50 been seen and paid in any event. Very happy it was missed!

Geelong at the MCG are not beating us in the 2016 finals series. They (and Hawthorn) were simply not at optimum form at the back end of 2016, which that scrappy first final demonstrated. That's not to mention Geelong's dreadful form in finals since 2012, especially at a ground with proper dimensions like the MCG.

Your scenario might have given us a different opponent on Grand Final day, with Hawthorn potentially knocking off Sydney in the PF - even that is highly debatable given Hawthorn's massive concession of contested possessions and clearances, lack of pace and tired legs towards the end of that season (the week off would have helped of course). History will see 2016 as a bridge too far for that magnificent Hawthorn era.

The most talented and healthy team in that finals series was GWS and we were good enough to look them in the eye and knock them off away from home.

I doubt they would’ve beaten us too. Geelong vs Hawthorn was a really scrappy, ugly game that was put down as a classic at the time because it was close. Hawthorn were down nearly 50 in the next game against us, Geelong were down nearly 40 at quarter time in their next game. Both those sides looked a long way off the top three teams in the finals.

Even if they did beat us just on the fact we never beat them, there is no way they are beating GWS. GWS would win handsomely (them smashing Sydney showed they didn’t have finals nerves) and GWS probably go on to win the flag and leads me to sooking incessantly about GWS ruining the AFL for the next 50 years until the Bulldogs have another chance to win a flag.

At the risk of sounding like a whinger... The Bulldogs missed at least 2 very kickable goals in the last quarter of that Prelim - JJ was the culprit both times from memory. Dickson also missed the last goal when he hit the post which would have taken the margin out to 11 points. So the Dogs should have won that game by a comforable margin rather than keeping it close.
The Scully 'so called' free is a real stretch and to say they were robbed is just whinging like John Longmire

Oh I never thought they were robbed at all. That rule is a joke anyway and i'm glad it wasn't paid. But just pretending it was and it resulted in the Giants getting up, it would have been a super hollow grand final without the fairytale.

I think a massive sliding doors moment that is overlooked is Andrejs Everitt kicking the winning goal against Geelong mid 2012. If he did not kick that goal (and it was a hard goal to kick) then the Swans probably would not have won the flag.

Also another, if Joe Danniher picked the Swans under F/S then odds are we would not have gotten Buddy. That would have changed the entire Swans team a lot.

Bomber deciding to stay at Geelong instead of coming back to Essendon

- Do Geelong win the 2011 flag?

- If Geelong have a poorer 2011, do they and Bomber decide to bottom out for a full rebuild rather than remaining competitive as they did in the coming years? Where would they be now? Would a rebuild have succeeded or failed?

- Chris Scott was a highly rated assistant. Does he get a senior job elsewhere? What does he do there?

- Do Robinson and Dank ever get introduced to Essendon? Do they continue at the Gold Coast or go to another club?

- Does Hird battle majorly as coach without Bomber, and end up getting sacked at the end of 2012 or 2013? Who coaches Essendon then?

- Where do the bikes stash the drugs without the Port Melbourne converted warehouse?

Does Ablett stay or go? The cash was magnificent but clearly he and Bomber fell out in 2010

2013 Prelim final.

Prior to this moment the Hawthorn side had a reputation of underperforming in comparison to the vast amount of talent that was in the side. We choked a big lead in the prelim in 2011, and we choked in the 2012 Grand Final. We were now facing a third straight year of no success at 3 quarter time, and a twelvth straight defeat against our archnemesis of the decade.

Two pivotal moments of the game.

1) Enter Shaun Burgoyne. Wills the team over the line all over the ground. Forward, midfield and in defense he was the master on the night. Almost singlehandedly carries the Hawks over the line in the fourth quarter, and getting us into another Grand Final.

Without this moment will there be a threepeat?
Without his performance, would we have been too mentally burned out to go again?
How would players like Hodge, Mitchell, Roughead, Burgyone and their legacy be perceived without a threepeat.
The question of the 2001 Draft #1 pick will still remain. Was Hodge the right decision (in hindsight 100% yes).
Would we have been known as chokers?
What will be Clarkson's legacy? Will he achieve potential GOAT status that he has now?

Without this moment, the Hawthorn side of 2013-2015 would never have been known as one of the greatest sides of all time.

2) Varcoe's miss. Had he kicked the goal it would have forced the game into a draw and extra-time making it quite likely the greatest final/game in the history of football. Hawthorn had a steam of momentum but this was a champion Geelong side who knew how to step up when it mattered. Hawthorn's reputation did not match them at this point. If Geelong won they would challenge Fremantle who had humiliated them at Kardinia Park in a game with a lot of bad blood and venom.
Fremantle would have gone into the match with a heap of confidence and possibly set themselves up for their first flag, or Geelong bent on revenge could have cemented them as without a doubt the greatest team of all time, with Chris Scott being a 2x Premiership coach.

You can go back a generation - if Terry Daniher wasn't traded to Essendon in 1979 for Neville Fields, the entire Daniher clan and future father-sons would have all be wedded to South Melbourne/Sydney and no other club.

I think he was already gone, but yeah good question. What if both him and Thompson stayed and were feuding in 2011?

Does Collingwood win the 2011 flag? Malthouse is pushed out after back-to-back flags, which makes the pressure on Buckley and those who employed even more pointed and extreme as the Pies fall down the ladder. Does Bucks survive? Who coaches Collingwood?

Speaking of Burgoyne, imagine if mediation wasn't able to settle the trade week impasse between Port and Hawthorn and he ended up not being traded (like the Ryan O'Keeffe to Hawthorn trade).

If we had nabbed O'Keefe it also asks the question of whether Sydney would have beat Hawthorn in 2012. He was immense that day.

If McMahon had missed Richmond would have got pick 1, Melbourne pick 2 and Fremantle pick 3 and if the order of the draft stayed the same Fremantle would have gotten Dusty, imagine Dusty and Fyfe in the same midfield together
Freo get Dusty instead of Morabito. Would they then win the flag in 2013? Very possible his offensive weapons get them a couple of extra goals they needed.

Melbourne only get Trengrove. No Scully so they never get 4 and 14 (I think it was) for compensation when he left for GWS.
Which means Melbourne wouldnt have been able to trade for the mini draft pick which got them Hogan. So Hogan plays for whoever else traded for that mini draft pick or maybe GWS used it themselves.
They also they got pick 20 back which they traded for Dawes (lol) which Pies then used on Broomhead.
Not to mention Melbourne not getting 2 extra picks means everyone elses would've moved up so the entire draft and therefor every game and other drafts would been very differnt.

Richmond get Scully. Who knows how he would've performed here of if he still would've left. But no Dusty probably would = no premiership last year. So Crows have flag last year instead maybe?

All of this coudlve happened if Mcmahon missed that goal or even if the umpire said the siren went before the mark.
Added bonus is that it was Tambling that kicked it to him. So not picking Franklin got us Dusty and a flag in the end. lol.

My personal favourite - there were many in this game.
If the tackle with 57 second left hadn't been incorrectly paid HTB, or the tackle with 5 seconds left was incorrectly paid HTB in the same way?

Pretty sure we were keen on Dusty, would've picked him anyway.

Or earlier than that, what if the Collingwood board hadn't voted against recruiting Plugger Lockett at the end of 1994? It's sometimes forgotten that coming to Sydney was pretty much a last resort for Lockett. He was close to joining the Pies and I think also Richmond. (I'm not sure why the Richmond move fell over).

Together with Barassi, Lockett put the Swans and AFL on the map in Sydney. They gave the club and the sport credibility in the city and the state, and finally persuaded the local media to pay some attention. That, in turn, enabled the club to recruit other players with experience and clout who were able to help build a stable and successful club. Who knows where AFL in NSW would be had Lockett never arrived. Maybe the club would have dug itself out of the mire in some other way but it's impossible to know how or when.
Close to joining the Tigers?
Quarters went on air and said it was done and dusted

How about what if there was no weeks break at the end of the home and away season, Bulldogs head to WA without 3 of their key players leading to Hawthorn verse West Coast in the Semi at the MCG which the Hawks would win

You can thank Brad Scott for that one. Ross Lyon started the trend but no one really cared when top of the ladder rested half their team. Then North did, and they finished 8th.

Purely speculating here
If that doesn't happen, we are probably a better chance to win the elim against them the next week, and potentially make the prelim since Sydney were shot by that stage. If we win a final or two that year, we probably don't chase Yarran, or become as desperate in 2016. If we don't have a s**t 2016, we probably don't have an epiphany and probably don't win the 2017 flag.

Then, the AFL obviously doesn't bring in the bye round, the Bulldogs don't get their players back, probably don't win in Perth.
That decision to rest may have indirectly lead to the last few flags

Yeeeah, nah... The HTB free won by Hodge was tough but it was there. He made no attempt to get rid of it so the umpire had to pay it.

And in the final seconds Lake should have actually been awarded a free for first due to an arm hold. But even if they were to have paid HTB against him, Monfries still wouldn't have been able to kick the goal from there at that angle and at that range with everyone else standing on the goal line ready to spoil.

Sam Mitchell's game saving tackle on Tuck. If he didn't get that tackle then reasonably good chance Tuck kicks the goal or sets it up for a teammate to kick.

They kick that goal and they very likely win that game. Tensions were very high at Hawthorn at that time as our start to the 2010 season was abysmal. Had we lost that game then Clarkson probably would've been fired by JeffreyK on the following Monday.

And so: no Clarko, no threepeat.
