Sliding door moments

If McMahon had missed Richmond would have got pick 1, Melbourne pick 2 and Fremantle pick 3 and if the order of the draft stayed the same Fremantle would have gotten Dusty, imagine Dusty and Fyfe in the same midfield together
Would Freo really overlook the highly rated local boy who in reality they took at pick 4 in 2009 for Dusty? Which equally brings me to Morabito, with what could have happened if he didn’t have the knees he had. At the end of 2010 he was rated above Fyfe, produced a great goal in his first final in his first season. What happens with a fit Morabito with a few years development, come 2012-2015?

The all time classic is what if the ball had bounced differently for Milne in the 2010 drawn Grand Final (or alternatively, what if Milne had actually attacked the ball)?

Think about the difference that would make to:
  • Milne's reputation - would be considered a hero of St Kilda on par with Barry Breen instead of remembered for the indecent assault.
  • Malthouse - if he couldn't get Collingwood over the line in 2011 would have coached for 17 seasons without a flag, severely denting his legacy and rep.
  • Buckley - the handover would probably be seen as necessary and he would have been initially cut much more slack as a result.
  • Lyon - hailed as a coaching genius instead of devising game plans that come up short in Grand Finals.
  • Pendlebury - the fact he was suffering through illness in the GF would not have been seen as a valid excuse for his poor performance if he didn't have the ability to make amends the week after. Other achievements greatly diminished as a result.
  • McGuire - huge pressure on Eddie's presidency if he doesn't have a flag after all that time in charge.
  • Riewoldt, Hayes, Goddard, Montagna etc - vast difference in legacy and reputation if they have a flag on their CV at end of their careers.
  • Reverse for Swan, Didak etc who would be missing their premiership credentials.

All these massive changes and more due to one bounce of the ball...
Someone ban this guy....

Yeeeah, nah... The HTB free won by Hodge was tough but it was there. He made no attempt to get rid of it so the umpire had to pay it.

And in the final seconds Lake should have actually been awarded a free for first due to an arm hold. But even if they were to have paid HTB against him, Monfries still wouldn't have been able to kick the goal from there at that angle and at that range with everyone else standing on the goal line ready to spoil.
If ….. if not... sliding doors. It's all about the fine lines that send us one way or another, and that was about as fine as it could have been.

If___ the loss to Collingwood was a bad one ...

then

we acknowledge that. But we're not jumping off the bandwagon yet.

If Robbie Warnock wasn't concussed by Corey Enright in 2011, and thus managed to kick the goal from 15 metres out to give Carlton a narrow win.

We finished 5th that year but couldn't beat any of the top 4. That would have given us a win, and possibly confidence to build on.

More importantly, it would have challenged the thinking that Ratten's game plan couldn't beat top 4 teams... which means we don't hire Malthouse, which means our club doesn't get destroyed.

Still bitter

What a depressing thread for a St Kilda supporter. I'll add another though on top of the Milne bounce in 2010.

2004 Prelim v Port Adelaide, 1st Quarter and Fraser Gehrig kicks his 100th goal for the season. 'People Power' led by a couple of St Kilda supporters erupts and everyone runs onto the ground, forcing players to leave the field for over 3 minutes. We had 19 inside 50's to 4 and were all over them, both sides kicked 4 goals in the first quarter but all of Port's came after the ground invasion.

If that doesn't happen and play continues, what happens from there? Do Port still wrestle back the momentum and go onto win or do the Saints carry on into the Grand Final against Brisbane? Who knows, it could have even set up a Hawthorn type era of dominance considering we lost Prelim's in '04 and '05 (both of which we probably should have won), and '08, then lost Grand Finals in '10 and '11. Oh well.

Now I'm just going to go drink myself into a coma.
Yep that destroyed the momentum. Harvey on his haunches at the siren poor bugga

How about what if there was no weeks break at the end of the home and away season, Bulldogs head to WA without 3 of their key players leading to Hawthorn verse West Coast in the Semi at the MCG which the Hawks would win

Not really a sliding doors moment. We absolutely caned West Coast by 50 odd easing up with none of the inclusions being in the best players. If a couple of those players only got up because of the bye, we win by 30 easing up instead of 50.

Sam Mitchell's game saving tackle on Tuck. If he didn't get that tackle then reasonably good chance Tuck kicks the goal or sets it up for a teammate to kick.

They kick that goal and they very likely win that game. Tensions were very high at Hawthorn at that time as our start to the 2010 season was abysmal. Had we lost that game then Clarkson probably would've been fired by JeffreyK on the following Monday.

And so: no Clarko, no threepeat.

1 Sam Mitchell tackle is all it takes to wipe out 3 Hawks premierships you say?

Damn it! I really liked Sam Mitchell before reading your post.... :p

I doubt it. Eagles were flying and you guys were battling, plus it would have been back to back Perth trips for you. You had injuries to key players who wouldn't have been back, and despite not being in your best, chances are they would have still been better than those they replaced.

Them flying and the back to back Perth trips (11 days apart) didn't stop us battering them. Three players, who weren't in the best don't make ten goals difference. It was a smashing, the scoreboard flattered them. The players who would have played instead would have needed to be 20 points worse each then the underdone players that did come in. It's a stretch.

Was at this game. Was so mad with out performance despite the win that I left once the siren went and didn't really celebrate. If only I had known the significance of it at the time over the next decade.

Adam Treloar may have had landed a premiership......Richmond may not have had draft picks for Prestia and Rioli - FACT

What if Dean Wallis broke Fraser Brown's tackle in the '99 prelim?

Would North still have won the flag?

Would the Dons still have the hunger to completely ass-blast everyone in 2000?
North played the night before, remember listening to the Carlton v Essendon prelim the next day thinking this is very good for North as that game was an epic.
Couldn’t help but feel that was their grand final that day and North had both covered
