He's still a kid, who has taken time to adjust. I think he'll come good with maturity and experience, regardless of where he is at.
He is not a kid now 23 I believe .
But whether he will mature as a footballer is the question . I had definitely written him off and still long way from proving us doubters wrong .
The trouble is he is exactly the type of player we need and has been given the chance to grab it.

Still 22 until september

22 is still a kid in my book. Hopefully he gets some more development into him he has only played 25 games and a general rule of thumb is players really start paying off by game 50 so even though we will struggle to take the flag this year, getting 20+ games into Jenkins and Smack is vital to our set up next year.

He is a traditional FB, if I ever saw one...

You wrote him off ages ago. Who are you kidding?
I have always said that he has talent. I have also said that he's mentally weak. I have also made statements akin to "built like Tarzan, plays like Jane". I have also made statements about him playing with the same consistency as week old porridge.

I stand by all of those comments.

That said, I really do hope he finds a way to make the most of his talent. Right now, we need him in the team, with no viable replacements waiting in the SANFL. I hope he makes it, both for himself and for the club.

Hes been great in his current role so no need to change.
Could be groomed there if truck goes this year

BULLSHIT!!!!!

Nobody has any patience these days. Players either perform from day dot or they're useless. There was a time when people realised that bigger guys generally take a lot longer to develop, unless they're exceptionally good.

Feel free to search my posting history. I've been critical of McKernan on many (almost all) occasions - but I have never stated that he lacks talent.

I really CBFd looking through your clouded posted history. But if you haven't stated those exact words you've absolutely alluded to it.

Don't get me wrong... I've been highly critical of him as a player. You'll find plenty of posts accusing him of being mentally weak, lacking consistency, lacking aggression, needing to grow a pair of balls, that sort of thing. However, I have always said that he is/was talented, even if he looks/looked like wasting that talent.

So DJ apart from being a critic where do you stand .
So lets see if game to come out and say he going to be a star and what as - FWD -- Ruck or where .
I for one will stand up and say wrong if by some chance becomes the player we need and many think he will .
Although showed a little more on Sunday and will be given a good go I still think although got some talent definitely lacking in a lot of areas especially between the ears.

At least this year will give us an indication of whether he will end up as trade bait or become a first 22 player

I've been on the McKernan wagon since last year when he played against Geelong. He had recently fractured his cheek and was expected to be out for longer. Jacobs was out injured so McKernan came back early and did the job.

That told me he has a big heart, tons of courage and we already know he has ability. I thought from that point he just needs some confidence that he belongs. In big bloke terms he's very young still and if we lose patience and trade him away, I've no doubt we will regret it

Name me the dominant key position player/ruckmen playing in the AFL who is 22 years of age & under? Big men gernally take longer to develop & need to be patient. Been plenty who have been traded/delisted before they fully-developed (eg. Port with Giles).

Agree though he has now been given a great opportunity - let's hope he can grab it & play some consistent football. We don't need him to be a super-star, but a solid contributor who knows his role to the team.

He's only 5 months younger than Taylor Walker.. that means he's now the same age Tex was at the end of the 2012 season. There's a gaping chasm between their achievements to the same age.

True but different position and an unfair comparison. Walker is a once in a generation talent. It is like comparing young spinners to Warne...

Compare Mckernan to Maric, Griffin, Jacobs etc

Vader name me the quality KPP/ruckmen 22 & under in the whole AFL...

Walker is a gun, but has only taken himself to that level in the last year.

Given the role he is expected to play , a comparison to Tippett would be fairer.

I have no idea of that comparison BTW

Walker showed more by the age of 20, before his breakout year in 2012, than McKernan has by the age of 22.

I happily agree that ruckmen take longer to develop. For some reason most ruckmen don't seem to "come good" until the age of 25. That doesn't hold true to the same degree for KPPs. There are many, many, many KPP forwards who have achieved more than McKernan has at the same age.
